**The Laws of Lulav, 9 Seifim:**
 A lulav whose leaves are separated from each other but did not become loose like palm leaves is kosher even if it is not bound. Rema: However, it is the preferable way to do the mitzvah to have a lulav whose leaves are totally separated (the Maggid, the Ra"n ch. "Lulav haGazul").

נפרצו עליו והוא שידלדלו משדרו של לולב כעלי החריות [דהיינו שאינן עולין עם השדרה אלא תלויין למטה] [המגיד פ"ח] פסול: הגה וכ"ש אם נפרצו ונעקרו למטה מן השדרה דפסול אפילו אגדן [טור ור"ן פרק לולב הגזול] וכן אם נתקשו העלין כעץ ואינן יכולין לחברן אל השדרה פסול [טור וב"י] וכל זה ברוב עלין אבל אם מיעוט עליו נעשו כך ושאר עלין נשארו ועדיין הלולב נשאר מכוסה בעלין כשר [ר"ן פרק לולב הגזול]:

**Mishna Berura Yomi:**
If its leaves burst — that is, they became loose from the spine of the lulav like palm leaves, (meaning that they do not rise from the spine and instead hang down [the Maggid ch. 8] — it is invalid. Rema: And obviously [it is invalid] if its leaves burst and were uprooted from under the spine, in which case it is invalid even if bound (Tur, Ra"n ch. "Lulav haGazul"). Similarly, if the leaves became hardened, like wood, and it is impossible to attach them to the spine, it is invalid (Tur and Beit Yosef). All of this refers to a majority of the leaves. But if a minority became that way and the rest of the leaves remain and the lulav is still covered in leaves, it is kosher (Ra"n ch. "Lulav haGazul").

בריית עלין של לולב כך היא כשהם גדלים גדלים שנים שנים ודבוקים מגבן וגב של שני עלין היא הנקרא תיומת נחלקה התיומת [ברוב העלין] [טור וב"י] פסולה היו עליו אחת אחת מתחלת ברייתו ולא היה תיומת או שכל עליו כפולים מצדו הא' וצד השני ערום בלא עלין פסול: הגה וי"מ לומר דאם נחלק העלה העליון האמצעי שעל השדרה עד השדרה מיקרי נחלק התיומת ופסול והכי נוהגין (ת"ה סי' צ"ז) מיהו לכתחלה מצוה מן המובחר נוהגין ליטול לולב שלא נחלק העלה העליון כלל כי יש מחמירין אפילו בנחלק קצת ואם אותו העלה אינה כפול מתחלת ברייתו פסול [כל בו]:

3. Lulav leaves grows like this: when they grow, they grow in pairs attached together from the back. The back of these sets is called the tyomet. If the tyomet is split [in most of the leaves] [Tur, Beit Yosef] it is invalid. If the leaves grew individually from the beginning, such that there is no tyomet, or if all double leaves are on one side and the other side has no leaves, it is invalid. Rema: Some interpret this as meaning that if the central top leaf on top of the spine is split across the spine, it is considered a split tyomet and is invalid, and this is our practice (Trumat Hadeshen 97). However, initially it is the preferred way to do the mitzvah to get a lulav whose top leaf is not split at all, because there are those who are stringent when even some of it is split. If that leaf is not double from the beginning of its growth, it is invalid (Kol Bo).

לא היו עליו זה על גב זה כדרך כל הלולבין אלא זה תחת זה אם ראש זה מגיע לעיקר שלמעלה ממנו עד שנמצא כל שדרו של לולב מכוסה בעלין כשר ואם אין ראשו של זה מגיע לצד עיקר של זה או שאין לו הרבה עלין זה על זה אלא מכל צד יוצא א' למטה סמוך לעיקרו ועולה על ראשו פסול:

4. If the leaves were not one on top of the other like lulavs are but rather one below the other, if the head of one reaches the stem of the one above it such that the whole spine of the lulav is covered in leaves, it is kosher. If the head of one does not reach the side of the stem of another or there are not many leaves on top of each other, just one from each side reaching the stem of another, it is invalid.

לולב שיבשו רוב עליו [או שדרתו] [טור] פסול ושיעור היבשו' משיכל' מרא' ירקות שבו וילבינו פניו: הגה וי"א דלא מיקרי יבש אלא כשנתפרך בצפורן מחמת יבשותו [טור בשם התוס'] וכן נוהגין במדינות אלו שאין לולבין מצויין [הגהות מיימוני פ"ז]:

**Mishna Berura Yomi:**
A lulav where the majority of leaves have dried out [or its spine] [Tur] is invalid. The measure of dryness is when the greenness is finished and it whitens. Rema: Some say that it is not considered dried until a fingernail can disintegrate it due to its dryness (Tur quoting Tosafot) and this is the practice in these countries, where there are not palm trees (Hagahot Maimoni ch. 7).

נקטם ראשו דהיינו שנקטמו רוב העלין העליונים פסול: הגה ואם נקטם העלה העליון האמצעי שעל השדרה פסול [המגיד ור"ן פרק לולב הגזול] ודוקא דאיכא אחר אבל ליכא אחר מברכים עליו [מרדכי פ"ג ומנהגים]:

**Mishna Berura Yomi:**
If the top [of the lulav] was severed, meaning that most of the top leaves are severed, it is invalid. RAMA: If the top central leaf on the spine was severed, it is invalid (the Maggid, Ra"n ch. "Lulav haGazul"), assuming there is another [lulav]. If there is no other one, we bless on this one (Mordechai ch. 3 and Minhagim).

נסדק אם נתרחקו שני סדקיו זה מזה עד שיראו כשנים פסול: הגה ואפילו לא נחלקה התיומת העליונה בעניין שיפסל הלולב מכח נחלקה התיומת:

If it cracked and the two sides are so separated that it looks like two, it is invalid. Rema: Even if the top tyomet is not split such that the lulav would be invalidated because of the split tyomet.

יש לו כמין קוצים בשדרתו או שנצמת ונכווץ או שהוא עקום לפניו שהרי שדרו כגב בעל חטוטרת פסול וכן אם נעקם מא' מצדדיו פסול אבל אם נעקם לאחוריו כשר שזו הוא ברייתו:

**Mishna Berura Yomi:**
If it has thorny things on its spine, was smashed, shrunk, or bent forwards such that its spine was like the back of a hunchback, it is invalid. Similarly, if one side was bent, it is invalid. But if it is bent backward, it is valid, because this is how it grows.

אם כפוף בראשו פסול ודוקא כששדרתו כפופה אבל עליו כפופים בראשו כמו שדרך להיות הרבה לולבים כשר:

**Mishna Berura Yomi:**
If it is bent at the top, it is invalid. This is specifically when its spine is bent. However, if its leaves are bent at the top, as they are in many lulavs, it is valid.
