אָמַר: כָּל מִי שֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ כָּבוֹד וַעֲשִׁירוּת יוֹתֵר, הַכָּבוֹד רָחוֹק מִמֶּנּוּ בְּיוֹתֵר.

The Rebbe said: The greater your honor and wealth, the farther you are from them.

כִּי כְּשֶׁאֶחָד יֵשׁ לוֹ מְעַט מָעוֹת, הוּא יָכוֹל לְהַחֲזִיק הַמָּעוֹת אֶצְלוֹ סָמוּךְ לִבְשָׂרוֹ. אֲבָל כְּשֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ הַרְבֵּה מָעוֹת, הַמָּעוֹת שֶׁלּוֹ מֻנָּח בְּתֵבָה. נִמְצָא שֶׁהַכָּבוֹד שֶׁהוּא הָעֲשִׁירוּת, רָחוֹק מִמֶּנּוּ בְּיוֹתֵר. וְכֵן כְּשֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ עוֹד יוֹתֵר עֲשִׁירוּת אֲזַי מְעוֹתָיו וּסְחוֹרוֹתָיו מֻנָּחִים בַּחֲנוּת וְכַיּוֹצֵא וְרָחוֹק מִמֶּנּוּ עוֹד יוֹתֵר. וּכְשֶׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ עוֹד יוֹתֵר וְיוֹתֵר עֲשִׁירוּת אֲזַי הוֹנוֹ וַעֲשִׁירוּת שֶׁלּוֹ מֻנָּח בִּמְקוֹמוֹת וַעֲיָרִים אֲחֵרִים רָחוֹק עוֹד יוֹתֵר וְיוֹתֵר מִמֶּנּוּ.

When you have only a little money, you can keep it on your person. When you acquire more, you must keep it in a strongbox. It is then more distant from you. When you acquire still more, you must keep it in the bank. It is even farther from you. Acquire still more, and your wealth and investments are scattered in other cities and faraway places. They are even farther away from you.

The more honor and wealth you have, the farther away they are.

וְהַקֵּיסָרִים וְהַמְּלָכִים שֶׁכְּבוֹדָם מְרֻבֶּה מְאֹד, כְּבוֹדָם רָחוֹק מֵהֶם עוֹד יוֹתֵר. כִּי הַמֶּלֶךְ אוֹ הַקֵּיסָר יוֹשֵׁב בְּבֵיתוֹ וְכָאן מְזַמְּרִין וּמְשׁוֹרְרִין הַקַּאפֶּעלְיֶע בִּשְׁבִילוֹ לְעֵת עֶרֶב כַּנָּהוּג. כִּי בְּעִסְקֵי עוֹלָם הַזֶּה כָּל מַה שֶּׁיֵּשׁ לָאָדָם כָּבוֹד בְּיוֹתֵר הַכָּבוֹד רָחוֹק מִמֶּנּוּ בְּיוֹתֵר.

Great emperors and kings have very great honor, but it is farthest away of all. The tzar’s subjects sing his anthem here each evening while he sits far away in his palace. The more wordly honor a person has, the farther away it is from him.

אֲבָל תּוֹרָה וּמַעֲשִׂים טוֹבִים כָּל מַה שֶּׁיֵּשׁ לוֹ יוֹתֵר הֵם סְמוּכִים אֵלָיו בְּיוֹתֵר.

But with Torah and good deeds, the more you have, the closer they are to you.
