דַּע, שֶׁכָּל אָדָם, קֹדֶם הַשֵּׁנָה הוּא רוֹאֶה כָּל הַנְּשָׁמוֹת שֶׁל הַמֵּתִים שֶׁל קְרוֹבִים שֶׁלּוֹ אוֹ אוֹתָן שֶׁהֵם מִשָּׁרְשׁוֹ.

Before each person goes to sleep, he sees the souls of all his dead relatives. He also sees the souls of all who share his soul root.

כְּמוֹ שֶׁקֹּדֶם הַמִּיתָה רוֹאִין הַנְּשָׁמוֹת הַנַּ"ל כַּיָּדוּעַ. כְּמוֹ־כֵן קֹדֶם הַשֵּׁנָה שֶׁהוּא אֶחָד מִשִּׁשִּׁים בְּמִיתָה (בְּרָכוֹת נז:) רוֹאִין אוֹתָם גַּם־כֵּן.

It is taught that when one dies, one sees all these souls (*Ma’avar Yabok*, *Siftey Tzedek* 32). Sleep is one-sixtieth of death (*Berakhot* 57a; *Zohar* I, 169b). Therefore, one also sees these souls before going to sleep.

When you see these souls before sleeping, you see them only vaguely and in passing.

כִּי קֹדֶם הַמִּיתָה מַמָּשׁ, אֲזַי יֵשׁ גַּם כֵּן חִלּוּקִים: שֶׁאָדָם גָּדוֹל וְאִישׁ כָּשֵׁר רוֹאֶה הַנְּשָׁמוֹת הַנַּ"ל קֹדֶם מוֹתוֹ בִּרְאִיָּה גְּמוּרָה, אַךְ סְתָם בְּנֵי־אָדָם אֲפִלּוּ קֹדֶם מוֹתָם אֵינָם רוֹאִים אוֹתָן הַנְּשָׁמוֹת רַק בְּהַעֲבָרָה בְּעָלְמָא, כְּמוֹ שֶׁעוֹבֵר זְרִיחָה וְהִתְנוֹצְצוֹת בְּעָלְמָא לִפְנֵי הָעֵינַיִם.

Even before death, there are many levels of seeing souls. A great tzaddik will see them very clearly. But the average person only sees them in passing, like a spark flashing before his eyes.

וְקֹדֶם הַשֵּׁנָה שֶׁהִיא רַק אֶחָד מִשִּׁשִּׁים בְּמִיתָה אֲזַי גַּם הָרְאִיָּה הַנַּ"ל שֶׁל הַנְּשָׁמוֹת הַנַּ"ל הוּא רַק אֶחָד מִשִּׁשִּׁים מֵהִתְנוֹצְצוּת הַנַּ"ל, וְעַל־כֵּן אֵינוֹ נִרְגָּשׁ בְּחוּשׁ הָרְאוּת כְּלָל רְאִיָּה הַנַּ"ל, וְאֵין אָדָם יוֹדֵעַ מִזֶּה מֵחֲמַת שֶׁהוּא הִתְנוֹצְצוּת מְעַט מְאֹד אֶחָד מִשִּׁשִּׁים מֵהִתְנוֹצְצוּת הַנַּ"ל, אֲבָל בֶּאֱמֶת הַכֹּל רוֹאִין קֹדֶם הַשֵּׁנָה, כַּנַּ"ל.

Sleep is only one-sixtieth of death. The vision is therefore only one-sixtieth of this flashing spark. It may be only subliminal and not actually sensed. People are not aware of the vision before sleeping because it is only one-sixtieth of the already vague vision that one has before death. But the truth is that every person has this vision.
