[Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sulam%20on%20Zohar/s/Introduction/r/203:1)

**The Sefaria Sulam, 2023:**
**203. “Thus, one should, etc.”**
**Thus, one should awaken the fear on the other side of harsh judgment: When one sees that a harsh judgment rests upon him, he should awaken the fear and fear his Master appropriately, and not harden his heart. With regard to this, it is stated: “He who hardens his heart will fall into evil”** [Proverbs 28:14], meaning that he will fall **to that other side, which is called “evil.” The result is that fear holds onto both sides,** the side of good and love and the side of harsh judgment, **and is incorporated in them. If the fear incorporates the side of good and love, it is an appropriate whole love.**

###### Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:2
[Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sulam%20on%20Zohar/s/Introduction/r/203:2)

**The Sefaria Sulam, 2023:**
Explanation: Fear is a commandment that incorporates all of the commandments of the Torah, since it is the gate to faith in God. In accordance with the awakening of one’s fear, so will the faith in His providence reside upon [the person], as stated above. Consequently, **“this fear must not be forgotten in all the commandments”** [section #202#] – one must not forget the **fear** in each and every commandment, **“much less in this commandment,”** especially with regard to the commandment of **love,** i. e., fear must be awakened along with it. This is because it is in the commandment of love that fear is actually united together with [love], as stated. Accordingly, one must awaken the fear on **both sides** of the **love,** both **love “in mercy and the success of one’s ways”** [section #201#] and **love** at a time of **harsh judgment,** as [the *Zohar*] proceeds to explain.

###### Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:3
[Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:3](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sulam%20on%20Zohar/s/Introduction/r/203:3)

**The Sefaria Sulam, 2023:**
[The *Zohar*] continues: **“Fear should be attached to it. How is it attached? Love** [etc.,” section #202#]. [The *Zohar*] is taking care that we will not err in its words, with regard to its statement that complete **love** is when He takes one’s soul, i. e., at a time of **harsh judgment.** We [might] think that the meaning is that we should not be afraid of the harsh judgment at all but only cleave to His love with devotion and without any **fear.** [To counteract this erroneous conclusion, the *Zohar*] concludes that **“fear should be attached to it. How is it attached? Love.”** That is, **fear** should also be awakened at that time, just as one awakens the **whole love.**

###### Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:4
[Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:4](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sulam%20on%20Zohar/s/Introduction/r/203:4)

**The Sefaria Sulam, 2023:**
Here [the *Zohar*] reiterates the **two sides** of **love** that were mentioned earlier, i. e., **“whether in judgment or in mercy and the success of one’s ways.”** [The *Zohar*] states that one must awaken the **fear on both sides** of **love,** i. e., that at the time of **mercy and success of one’s ways** one must awaken the fear of Him, lest sin [due to lack of fear should manifest and] cause [his downfall] and his love of God cools. [The person should] thus incorporate the **fear** in **love.** Likewise, on the other side of the **love,** at a time of **harsh judgment,** [the person] should awaken the fear of God and not harden his heart or distract his mind from the judgment. He will thus incorporate the **fear** in **love** here as well. If [a person] follows this practice, he will always be in a state of complete **love,** as is appropriate.

###### Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:5
[Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:5](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sulam%20on%20Zohar/s/Introduction/r/203:5)

**The Sefaria Sulam, 2023:**
With respect to the incorporation of **fear** in **love** on the side of mercy, [the *Zohar*] cites the verse: **“Happy is the man who fears always.”** [The *Zohar*] expounds the word **“always”** as implying that even when God treats [a person] favorably, he should still fear Him, lest [the lack of fear lead to] sin [which will] cause [his downfall]. Regarding the incorporation of **fear** in **love** on the side of **judgment,** [the *Zohar*] quotes the verse: **“He who hardens his heart will fall into evil,”** meaning that one should not harden his heart at a time of judgment for any reason in the world, for then he will fall **“to that other side** [the *Sitra Aḥara*]**, which is called ‘evil. ’”** Rather, one must then awaken the **fear** even more, to fear Him and incorporate the **fear** in his whole **love** at that time. Both the first fear and the second fear are not for [the sake of the person's] own benefit, Heaven forbid. Rather, [the person should be] frightened that he might deteriorate in providing satisfaction to his Maker. Understand this well.

###### Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:6
[Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:6](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sulam%20on%20Zohar/s/Introduction/r/203:6)

**The Sefaria Sulam, 2023:**
The first two commandments have thus been thoroughly clarified. The **first commandment** is fear, and it is a general principle [which incorporates] the whole of Torah and the commandments. It is [referenced in the word] ***Bereshit*,** and it is clarified in the first verse, which is: **“In the beginning** [*Bereshit*] **God created the heavens and the earth.”** In other words, from the **fear,** which is ***reshit***, there emerged **the heavens and the earth,** which are [*Ze’er Anpin*] and *Nukba* and their offshoots, which are *Beria*, *Yetzira*, and *Asiya*. The second verse is the clarification of the punishment [for violations of the commandment of fear], which are the four death penalties: *Tohu* is **strangulation;** *bohu* is **stoning;** “darkness” is **burning,** and “spirit” is **decapitation.**

###### Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:7
[Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:7](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sulam%20on%20Zohar/s/Introduction/r/203:7)

**The Sefaria Sulam, 2023:**
The **second commandment** is love, which is clarified in the verse: **“And God said, Let there be light** etc.” [This love] contains **two sides:** The first side is in **wealth, long life, children** etc. [section #200#]. The second side is **“with all your soul and with all your might”** [Deuteronomy 6:5], that is, when He takes your **soul** and your **might** the love should be as whole as when He gives you **wealth and long life** etc. In order to reveal this **love,** the light of the act of creation was concealed, and **when it was concealed, the harsh judgment emerged,** as stated above [section #201#]. The **fear** should also be incorporated with the **love** on its **two sides:** On the first side, one should fear lest [the lack of fear lead to] sin [which will] cause [his downfall] and his love will be diminished. On the second side, one should fear the concealment [of the light of creation], which is the judgment to which God sentences him. This is in accordance with the plain meaning of the words of the *Zohar*.

###### Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:8
[Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:8](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sulam%20on%20Zohar/s/Introduction/r/203:8)

**The Sefaria Sulam, 2023:**
However, in order to continue onto the rest of the commandments, we must clarify these matters more deeply, [at the level of understanding of] the lofty level of *Atzilut*.

###### Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:9
[Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:9](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sulam%20on%20Zohar/s/Introduction/r/203:9)

**The Sefaria Sulam, 2023:**
Know that in the *Zohar* the four letters of the name ***Havaya*,** which are *Ḥokhma*, *Bina*, *Tiferet*, and *Malkhut*, are called **fear, love, Torah, and commandment.** The [letter] *yod*, which is *Ḥokhma*, is called **fear;** the first [letter] *heh*, which is *Bina*, is **love;** the *vav* is called **Torah;** and the last *heh* is called **commandment** (as stated in the *Zohar*, *Bereshit*, *Hashmatot*, old editions, page 265a, and in the *Zohar*, *Naso*, 37).

###### Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:10
[Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:10](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sulam%20on%20Zohar/s/Introduction/r/203:10)

**The Sefaria Sulam, 2023:**
[The *Zohar*] thus states: **“In the beginning** etc. **This is the first commandment** etc. **This commandment is ‘the fear of God, ’ which is called *reshit*”** [see section #189#]. The meaning is as follows: The *partzuf* of *Arikh Anpin* is the entirety of the world of *Atzilut*, which illuminates to all the worlds through its garments, which are called *Abba* and *Imma*, *Yisrael Sabba* and *Tevuna*, and [*Ze'er Anpin*] and *Nukba*. [*Arikh Anpin*] is also called sealed *Ḥokhma*, since its *Ḥokhma* is sealed in its own head and it does not give any of [this *Ḥokhma*] to the worlds [below]. Only *Bina* of *Arikh Anpin* illuminates to the [lower] worlds.

###### Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:11
[Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:11](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sulam%20on%20Zohar/s/Introduction/r/203:11)

**The Sefaria Sulam, 2023:**
Therefore, this *Bina* is called ***reshit*,** since it is the beginning [***reshit***] and the root of all the worlds [below]. It is called **“the fear of God,”** i. e., the fear of sublimity, resulting from **“because He is great and rules, the essence and the root** [of all the worlds], **and everything is considered like nothing before Him”** [section #191#]. From this *Bina*, [*Ze’er Anpin*] and *Nukba* emerge, which are called “heavens and earth. " This, then, is how the verse should be understood: **“*Bereshit*,”** with **fear,** “God created heaven and earth,” which are [*Ze’er Anpin*] and *Nukba*.

###### Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:12
[Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:12](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sulam%20on%20Zohar/s/Introduction/r/203:12)

**The Sefaria Sulam, 2023:**
This is the meaning of the statement: **“As it is stated: The beginning** [*reshit*] **of wisdom** [*ḥokhma*] **is fear of the Lord** [Psalms 111:10]; **‘the fear of the Lord is the beginning** [*reshit*] **of knowledge** [*da'at*]**’** [Proverbs 1:7], **since this matter is called by the word *reshit*”** [see section #189#]. The brains are *Ḥokhma*, *Bina*, and *Da'at*. However, the *Ḥokhma* of the brains is not the actual *Ḥokhma* of *Arikh Anpin*, but only *Bina* of *Arikh Anpin*, as stated above. When the *Bina* of *Arikh Anpin* ascends to the head of *Arikh Anpin*, [that *Bina*] returns to be *Ḥokhma* there, and gives *Ḥokhma* to the *partzufim*. Thus, the *Bina*, which is **fear,** is the beginning of *Ḥokhma*, and this is the meaning of the verse: **“The beginning of wisdom** [*ḥokhma*] **is fear of the Lord**.” Similarly, [fear of the Lord] is the **beginning** of knowledge [*da'at*], because *Da'at* is the mystical meaning of the root of [*Ze’er Anpin*] and *Nukba*, because [*Ze'er Anpin* and *Nukba*] raise [*Da'at*] to the head of *Arikh Anpin* to receive *Ḥokhma*, and therefore [*Ze'er Anpin*] and *Nukba* also receive *Ḥokhma* from [*Arikh Anpin*]. This is the meaning of the verse: **“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge** [*da’at*].” The words of the *Zohar* from here onwards are as explained above.

###### Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:13
[Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:13](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sulam%20on%20Zohar/s/Introduction/r/203:13)

**The Sefaria Sulam, 2023:**
This is the meaning of the statement: **“The second commandment is a commandment which the commandment of fear holds onto and from which it never departs. It is love”** [section #198#]. *Ḥokhma* is called **love,** because the [letter] ***yod*** of ***Havaya*** is the mystical meaning of the essence of *Bina*, i. e., the first three [*sefirot* of *Bina*], which are *Abba* and *Imma Ila’in*, of the aspect of pure air [*avira dakhya*] and the light of *Ḥokhma* is concealed in them (as stated in section #198# above, fourth paragraph). The place of the revelation of the light of *Ḥokhma* is from the lower seven [*sefirot*] of *Bina*, which are called *Yisrael Sabba* and *Tevuna*, the first ***heh*** of ***Havaya***. For this reason, [that *Yisrael Sabba* and *Tevuna* transmit the light of *Ḥokhma* which is called love, *Yisrael Sabba* and *Tevuna*] are called **love.** This [love] is the **second commandment** after **fear,** because this *Ḥokhma* is not received from *Ḥokhma* of *Arikh Anpin* itself, but from the [*Yisrael Sabba* and *Tevuna* aspect of] *Bina*, [and *Bina* is] fear, as stated.

###### Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:14
[Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:14](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sulam%20on%20Zohar/s/Introduction/r/203:14)

**The Sefaria Sulam, 2023:**
[The *Zohar*] says that **the commandment of fear holds onto it and never departs from it.** [This refers to how] the *Bina* is always united with *Ḥokhma* and never separates from it. In any place where there is *Bina*, *Ḥokhma* is necessarily with it as well, since *Ḥokhma* and *Bina* are always attached to one another, and you will never find *Ḥokhma* without *Bina* or *Bina* without *Ḥokhma*.

###### Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:15
[Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:15](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sulam%20on%20Zohar/s/Introduction/r/203:15)

**The Sefaria Sulam, 2023:**
[The *Zohar*] thereby teaches us that although it was stated that the **first commandment** is **fear,** i. e., *Bina*, one should not mistakenly think that it is *Bina* without *Ḥokhma*. Likewise, regarding the **second commandment,** which is **love, i. e.,** *Ḥokhma*, one should not mistakenly think that it is *Ḥokhma* without *Bina*. Rather, there is *Ḥokhma* in the **first commandment** as well, and there is also *Bina* in the **second commandment,** since *Ḥokhma* and *Bina* are incorporated and come together, and they never part. However, we name them in accordance with the dominant factor. In the **first commandment,** which is *Abba* and *Imma Ila’in*, and the first three [*sefirot*] of *Bina*, which are the essence of *Bina*, the dominant factor is *Bina*, and therefore we call it **fear.** In the **second commandment,** the dominant factor is *Ḥokhma*, and we therefore call it **love.** Remember this; do not forget it.

###### Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:16
[Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:16](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sulam%20on%20Zohar/s/Introduction/r/203:16)

**The Sefaria Sulam, 2023:**
This is the meaning of the statement: **“And what is a whole love? This is a great love,** etc. **When it is stated: ‘And God said, Let there be light’** [etc. ]” [see section #198#]. ***Bereshit*** is a sealed utterance, and the main revelation of ***Bereshit*** starts from the verse: “Let there be light,” which is the mystical meaning of the ascent of *Bina*, which is ***reshit*,** to the head of *Arikh Anpin*, where it returns to [be] an aspect of *Ḥokhma*, as stated above. Then *Ḥokhma* and *Bina* are together called **“great love.”** This is the mystical meaning of the utterance: “**Let there be light,”** since the *Bina* ascended to *Arikh Anpin* and transmits light to all the worlds [below], in the mystical meaning of **great love,** which is *Ḥokhma* and *Bina*.

**The Sefaria Sulam, 2023:**
This is the meaning of the statement: **“Love for the Holy One, blessed be He, is interpreted on two sides: There is one who loves Him because he has wealth, long life,** etc.” [section #200#]; **“for one should love the Holy One, blessed be He, as we learned, even if He takes your soul** etc. **Therefore, the light of the act of creation emerged and was subsequently concealed. When it was concealed, the harsh judgment emerged** [section #201#]. The meaning is as follows: It states below (*Bereshit* I, page 281, section 352): **“Let there be light for this world, and let there be light for the World-to-Come.”** [God] saw that this world is not fit to be used, and [therefore] He arose and concealed it in the World-to-Come, which is above the diaphragm inside the intestine of [the *partzuf* of] *Arikh Anpin*. [In this aspect of *Arikh Anpin*] is the aspect of the World-to-Come, [which is] in the place where *Abba* and *Imma Ila’in* are positioned, [which are the] first three [*sefirot*] of *Bina* that end at the chest of *Arikh Anpin*. [At that place of the chest of *Arikh Anpin* lies] the diaphragm that separates between the upper waters, *Abba* and *Imma Ila’in*, from the lower waters, *Yisrael Sabba* and *Tevuna* and [*Ze’er Anpin*] and *Nukba*. From the chest of *Arikh Anpin* and below, the light is dimmed and no longer illuminates, and the light is concealed in *Yisrael Sabba* and *Tevuna*, the lower seven [*sefirot*] of *Bina*, which are positioned from the chest to the navel of *Arikh Anpin*, and the light does not illuminate in them.

###### Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:18
[Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:18](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sulam%20on%20Zohar/s/Introduction/r/203:18)

**The Sefaria Sulam, 2023:**
This illustrates that the *Bina* was divided into **two sides,** since the light is revealed in the first three [*sefirot* of *Bina*], which are *Abba* and *Imma Ila’in* that are positioned above the chest of *Arikh Anpin*, in the mystical meaning of the upper waters. One who merits the level of *Abba* and *Imma Ila’in* has wealth, long life, children like olive plants around his table [see Psalms 128:3], he rules over his enemies, his ways are established for him, and in whatever he does he shall prosper [Psalms 1:3]. However, the light has already been concealed from the lower seven [*sefirot*] of *Bina*, which are positioned below the chest of *Arikh Anpin*, in the mystical meaning of the lower waters. Those who receive from [those lower seven *sefirot*] must love God in the aspect of “even if He takes your soul.” This is the mystical meaning of the two sides of **love,** which are the first three and the lower seven [*sefirot*] of *Bina*, of the aspect of the right [side in *Bina*], which is **love.** This [formation of two sides of *Bina*] is the result of the concealing of the light of the act of creation. If one merits to be whole in the love of God, both in the **love** of the aspect of *Abba* and *Imma Ila’in* and in the love of the aspect of *Yisrael Sabba* and *Tevuna*, **“this is appropriate love.”**

###### Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 203:19

**The Sefaria Sulam, 2023:**
[The *Zohar*] says that one must integrate the **fear** in those two sides of **love.** On the side of *Abba* and *Imma Ila’in* **“fear should be awakened, that one should fear lest sin causes** [his downfall]” [section #202#]. In a similar manner, on the side of the love of [the aspect of] *Yisrael Sabba* and *Tevuna* **“he should awaken the fear and fear his Master appropriately, and not harden his heart.”** That is, since *Ḥokhma* and *Bina*, which are **love** and **fear,** are always attached to one another, the aspect of the *Bina*, which is **fear,** must be incorporated, [and this refers] both to the first three [*sefirot*] of *Bina*, which are *Abba* and *Imma Ila'in*, and the lower seven [*sefirot*] of *Bina*, which are *Yisrael Sabba* and *Tevuna*.

**The Sefaria Sulam, 2023:**
Then **“the result is that fear holds onto both sides and is incorporated in them. This is the appropriate whole love.”** Here there are two which are four. There is no **love** except [love] with **two sides,** namely the first three and lower seven [*sefirot*] of *Bina*. Each [of these two aspects of] **love** is incomplete on either one of the two sides unless there is **fear** in each [one] of them. [This incompleteness is because] there cannot possibly be *Ḥokhma* without *Bina*, which is **love** without **fear.**
