**The Sefaria Sulam, 2023:**
**80. “That donkey driver, etc.”**
**That donkey driver who was driving** the donkeys **behind them said: “But what is** the meaning of: **‘And fear My sanctuary?’”** (Leviticus 19:30)**? [Rabbi Elazar] replied: “This is the sanctity of the Shabbat.” [The driver] responded: “And what is the sanctity of the Shabbat?” He said to [the driver]: “This is holiness that extends from above**, from the father and mother**.” [The driver] retorted: “If so, you have rendered the Shabbat as not holy in itself; rather, the holiness rests upon it from above**, from the father and mother**.” Rabbi Abba said: “That is indeed the case**, as it is stated: **‘And call the Sabbath a delight, and the holy of the Lord honorable’** (Isaiah 58:13)**. The Shabbat is mentioned separately, and ‘the holy of the Lord’ separately.” [The driver] said to [Rabbi Abba]: “If so, who is ‘the holy of the Lord’?” He replied: “It is the holiness that descends from above,** from the father and mother, **and resides over it**, the Shabbat**.” [The driver] retorted: “If the holiness that descends from above is called ‘honorable, ’ it appears that the Shabbat itself is not honorable, and** [yet] **it is stated: “And you shall honor it”** (Isaiah 58:13), which indicates that the Shabbat itself is honorable**. Rabbi Elazar said to Rabbi Abba: “Leave that man, as there is a word of wisdom in him, which we do not know.” They said to him: “You say.”**

**The Sefaria Sulam, 2023:**
Explanation: [The driver] asked [Rabbi Elazar]: **What is** the meaning of **“and fear My sanctuary?”** Since you maintain that the mystical meaning of Shabbat is the aspect of [*Ze’er Anpin*] and *Nukba*, why does the verse call them **“My sanctuary,”** when only the father and mother are called holy?¹ and *Imma Ila’in*.

footnotes:
¹ The terms “father” and “mother” can refer to different aspects of the higher levels. In this context, the reference is to Abba

**The Sefaria Sulam, 2023:**
He replied: **“The Shabbat is mentioned separately, and ‘the holy of the Lord’ separately.”** [Rabbi Elazar] proved to [the driver] from here that Shabbat itself is the aspect of [*Ze’er Anpin*] and *Nukba*, **“as it is not holy”** in its own right, but because **“holiness from above”** is extended to it, that is, from *Abba* and *Imma Ila’in*, which are called **“holy.”** The aspect of extension from [*Abba* and *Imma Ila’in*] is called **“the holy of the Lord,”** regarding which it states **“and the holy of the Lord honorable.”**
