[Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 97:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sulam%20on%20Zohar/s/Introduction/r/97:1)

**The Sefaria Sulam, 2023:**
**97. “When the sins caused, etc.”**
**When the sins caused** [their downfall]**, he descended into the levels below and killed that lion. Since he did not want to give him his prey as before, it is regarded as though he had killed him.** Therefore, **he certainly slew the lion. “Into the pit”** (II Samuel 23:20) means **in** [front of] **the eyes of the Other Side, the evil one. Upon seeing this, that Other Side grew stronger and sent a dog to eat the offerings** from upon the altar instead of the lion**. And that lion, what is its name? Its name is Uriel, as its face is the face of a lion** [*aryeh*]**. And what is the name of that dog? Its name is Baladan,** as Baladan has the same letters as *Bal-adam* [“not human”] as the letter *mem* can be exchanged for a *nun*, **since he is not classified as a man but a dog and the face of a dog.**

**The Sefaria Sulam, 2023:**
Explanation: Since the aspects of partitions were nullified from *Ban* and *Sag*, Israel below could no longer raise feminine waters either, which is the nourishment of the lion (as explained in the previous passage). The fusion ceased and the supernal light, which is the aspect of the **lion**, departed. It is **“as though”** that **lion** were **killed**, for [this supernal light, which is the lion, ] ascended to its root above and disappeared from the lower [levels].

**The Sefaria Sulam, 2023:**
[The *Zohar*] continues: **“‘Into the pit, ’ in the eyes of the Other Side, the evil one.”** For the root of receiving for oneself is in the eyes, in the mystical meaning of “the eye sees and the heart covets” (Rashi, end of *Parashat Shelaḥ*). This aspect of receiving is called a **“pit”** because it is [an expression of]: "The pit was empty, there was no water in it” (Genesis 37:24), as the supernal light is not drawn there, in the mystical meaning of: “He and I cannot dwell in the same abode” (see *Sota* 5a).

[Sulam on Zohar, Introduction 97:4](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Sulam%20on%20Zohar/s/Introduction/r/97:4)

**The Sefaria Sulam, 2023:**
[The *Zohar*] continues: **“He slew the lion into the pit, in the eyes of the Other Side.”** For the slaying of the lion was in front of the evil eyes of the *Sitra Aḥara*, which is called a “pit,” referring to broken pits that cannot hold water [Jeremiah 2:13]. They have now come out of their hiding places and been revealed with great dominion. **“And sent a dog to eat the offerings,”** because the opposite of the lion **that eats the offerings** is the dog that is constantly howling *hav hav* [“give, give”], as stated.

**The Sefaria Sulam, 2023:**
[The *Zohar*] continues: **“The name of that lion is Uriel, as its face is the face of a lion.”** The mystical meaning of the name *El* is *Ḥesed*, which is the mystical meaning of [the] right [side]. That lion, which is the light of *Ḥesed*, [the light of giving, ] as stated, is called Uri-El, that is, the **light** [*or*] that is drawn from the name *El*. His face is to the right, which is the mystical meaning of bestowal, in the mystical meaning of the verse: “And all four had the face of a lion on the right side” (Ezekiel 1:10).

**The Sefaria Sulam, 2023:**
[The *Zohar*] continues: **“The name of that dog is Baladan, since he is not classified as a man but a dog.”** The *Ze’er Anpin* is called “a man [*adam*]” when it has brains from *Bina*, which is the mystical meaning of ***adam*** [*alef*-*dalet*-*mem*], which has a numerical value of forty-five [*Ma*]. The mystical meaning of *Bina* is bestowal, as stated. This is why the Sages said: “You are called ***adam*** but the nations of the world are not called *adam*” (*Yevamot* 61a), because all the kindness that they perform, they do for themselves (see *Baba Batra* 10b). This is why he is called **Baladan,** which is an anagram of ***Bal-adam*,** as a *mem* can be exchanged for a *nun*.
