תרה. ת"ר כל סעודה שאינה של מצוה אין ת"ח כו' (פסחי' מ"ט ע"א) וששאלת היאך אנו אוכלי' בנישואין בת כהן לישראל [או] בת ת"ח לע"ה או כשמקיזין ואדם מזמין את חבירו או כשיש לו אורחי' הא סעודות רשות נינהו שמא ע"כ נהגו לומר שירות ותשבות להקב"ה ולהללו על החסד שעושה עם אדם ע"ה ועם שאר בריותיו תדיר א"כ אינ סעודת הרשות [דסעודת הרשות] נראה דלא מיקרי אלא היכא דאיכא שמחה דלאו מצוה כגון סעודת אירוסין ונישואין בת כהן לישראל או בת ת"ח לע"ה או בשמחת מריעות או כגון בחנוכה שמרבי' סעודות אלו לאלו. ושלום העני מאיר.

Why do we, nowadays, partake of secular festivity-meals and secular wedding-feast meals (such as at the wedding of a priest to a daughter of an Israelite, or of a daughter of a scholar to a commoner) in view of the fact that the Talmud explicitly states (B. Pesah. 49a): "A scholar may not partake of any but religious festivity-meals?"
*A*. We recite, at such meals, hymns of praise and thanksgiving to the Lord and thus convert them into religious feasts.
