ועוד שאלתי על מעבירי תער בזקניהם ומניחים חוט אחד ממעלה למטה אם יש עבירה בדבר או לא:

¹ Maimonides (Mishneh Torah Avodat Kochavim 12:6) writes that he has a tradition that forty hairs can be left on the corners of the beard. The Tur Yoreh Deah 181 cites Maimonides, but writes four hairs instead of forty. Beit Yosef ad loc understands this as the minimal width of the beard, and reads Rashi on Makkot 20b:6:2 in this light, but says since there is doubt about the meaning, the beard should be left unshaved.
