[The Gate of Unity 12:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:1)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
We must now understand the explanation of the aforementioned matter of the first *Tzimtzum*, and the aspect of the *Reshimu*-Impression which remained.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:2
[The Gate of Unity 12:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:2)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
Although it is known to those who are familiar [with these matters], nonetheless, there are many particular details in it.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:3
[The Gate of Unity 12:3](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:3)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
One must delve very deeply into this [matter], for it is pivotal to true union with the Essential Self of the Limitless Light of the Unlimited One, *HaShem*-יהו״ה, blessed is He.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:4
[The Gate of Unity 12:4](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:4)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
[That is, the understanding of this is pivotal to the realization of] how everything, even the entire chaining down of the *Kav*, is literally as nothing before Him.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:5
[The Gate of Unity 12:5](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:5)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
[This should be contemplated] to the point that a person is capable of focusing his desire, with self-sacrifice, upon the Essential Self of the Limitless Light of the Unlimited One, *HaShem*-*יהו״ה*, blessed is He, alone.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:6
[The Gate of Unity 12:6](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:6)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
This is as stated,¹ “You are He, *HaShem*-יהו״ה alone etc.”

footnotes:
¹ Nechemia 9:6

###### The Gate of Unity 12:7
[The Gate of Unity 12:7](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:7)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
This is [also] the meaning of,² recital. “The King who is exalted, alone,” [which refers to] the aspect of *Malchut* of the Unlimited One (*Ein Sof*) before the *Tzimtzum*.

footnotes:
² The blessings of the Shema

###### The Gate of Unity 12:8
[The Gate of Unity 12:8](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:8)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
That is, “He is exalted” even “over the days of the world” of *Adam Kadmon*, which are called “the preceding days (*Yemei Kedem*),” as previously mentioned.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:9
[The Gate of Unity 12:9](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:9)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
This is [also the explanation of the verse,³ “The heavens, and the heavens of the heavens, cannot contain You”]. “The heavens” refers to the aspect of the general encompassing [light] which follows the *Tzimtzum*.

footnotes:
³ Kings I, 8:27

###### The Gate of Unity 12:10
[The Gate of Unity 12:10](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:10)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
“The heavens of the heavens” refers to [the Limitless Light of the Unlimited One, *HaShem*-יהו״ה, blessed is He,] before the *Tzimtzum*. “They cannot contain You” even in the way of a “vessel for a vessel,” as in “He engraved an engraving in the upper purity.”⁴ This will suffice for those of understanding.

footnotes:
⁴ Zohar I 15a

###### The Gate of Unity 12:11
[The Gate of Unity 12:11](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:11)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
This [matter] is further [emphasized by] the verse,⁵ “Who have I in the heavens but You? And there is none upon earth that I desire beside You.” “Who have I in the heavens” refers to the general encompassing [light] (*Sovev*) before the *Tzimtzum*, which is called “the heavens of the heavens.”

footnotes:
⁵ Psalms 73:25

###### The Gate of Unity 12:12
[The Gate of Unity 12:12](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:12)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
“There is none upon earth that I desire beside You,” refers to the aspect of the *Kav V’Chut* (Line and Thread), which is the aspect of the general inner, pervading [light] (*Memaleh*).

###### The Gate of Unity 12:13
[The Gate of Unity 12:13](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:13)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
Now, as known to those who have done the analysis, there are various different analogies and ways to explain the matter of the *Tzimtzum*, which is called “the empty place.”

###### The Gate of Unity 12:14
[The Gate of Unity 12:14](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:14)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
[However,] they all arrive at one general point; that in order for the Limitless Light of the Unlimited One, *HaShem*-יהו״ה, blessed is He, to be expressed in a limited way, in the aspect of a [thin] line [of revelation], He necessarily restrained His essential light, so that it would remain concealed in His Essential Self.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:15
[The Gate of Unity 12:15](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:15)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
[This is necessary, so that] not all of it would shine forth, but only an infinitesimal amount.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:16
[The Gate of Unity 12:16](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:16)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
This is in order that the light could afterwards be drawn down [into revelation] in [a way of] a qualitative leap of [diminished] value.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:17
[The Gate of Unity 12:17](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:17)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
This is analogous to the brilliance of a deep and broad concept [as it exists in the] self of the teacher.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:18
[The Gate of Unity 12:18](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:18)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
In order for him to draw [this concept] to the student, who is not [intellectually] comparable to him, the teacher must conceal the entire depth of his comprehension within himself, so that all that is left is but an aspect of an impression, which is like a single point from all the depth and breadth.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:19
[The Gate of Unity 12:19](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:19)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
This is not to say that [his understanding] was completely withdrawn and concealed.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:20
[The Gate of Unity 12:20](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:20)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
Rather, it is like one who relates a teaching in a brief way. He himself has the entire depth and breadth of the logical arguments in his intellect, only that during the time that he states his ruling briefly, they are temporarily included and concealed within himself.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:21
[The Gate of Unity 12:21](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:21)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
However, as soon as he is questioned [about it], he can expand on the subject.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:22
[The Gate of Unity 12:22](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:22)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
Only that in order for the student to understand, through this short [ruling], he temporarily conceals [the depth and breadth of it] within himself, as explained elsewhere at length.⁶

footnotes:
⁶ See Likutei Torah, Vayikra (in the additions) 52c and on; Also see Ma’amarei Admor HaEmtza’ee, Vayikra, Vol. 2, pg. 921 and on.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:23
[The Gate of Unity 12:23](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:23)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
Now, the impression, which remains like a point, is not a complete and true *Tzimtzum* (withdrawal).

###### The Gate of Unity 12:24
[The Gate of Unity 12:24](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:24)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
[A true and complete *Tzimtzum*] would be like one who completely withdraws [revelation] and completely conceals, [in which case] the student lacks all [revelation].

###### The Gate of Unity 12:25
[The Gate of Unity 12:25](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:25)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
Rather, [the explanation of] the matter is that included in this short [ruling] is the entire length. Not a single thing is missing, not even half a thing.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:26
[The Gate of Unity 12:26](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:26)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
This is similar to how the short rulings of the *Mishnah* include the entire length of the logical debate of the *Talmud*.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:27
[The Gate of Unity 12:27](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:27)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
This is [likewise] similar to how the entire logical debate is not concealed from one who knows it, even when he reviews it to himself briefly.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:28
[The Gate of Unity 12:28](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:28)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
We find that his knowledge of the length encompasses the entire revelation of the brief [teaching], in a concealed way.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:29
[The Gate of Unity 12:29](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:29)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
[However,] it is not completely withdrawn, as [in the case of] forgetfulness or the like, as explained elsewhere at length.⁷

⁷ See Likutei Torah, Vayikra (in the additions) 53c; Also see Sefer HaMa’amarim 5647, pg. 48.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:30
[The Gate of Unity 12:30](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:30)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
The second type of analogy, which is the life of the soul [as it is invested] in the body, also brings out the same point as above.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:31
[The Gate of Unity 12:31](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:31)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
This is that in order for there to be a change from the essential spiritual life of the soul, to a [physical] life of flesh, it is necessary for there to be an initial concealment and contraction of the light of the soul.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:32
[The Gate of Unity 12:32](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:32)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
This is because there is no comparison between them.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:33
[The Gate of Unity 12:33](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:33)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
Nonetheless, the soul is affected by the occurrences of the body.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:34
[The Gate of Unity 12:34](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:34)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
Therefore, even the light of the physical life [force] is connected and bound with the spiritual light of the essence.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:35
[The Gate of Unity 12:35](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:35)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
This is similar to [how the aforementioned] physical growth is bound to the spiritual power of growth.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:36
[The Gate of Unity 12:36](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:36)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
However, when one’s [physical] limb becomes severed, God forbid, this does not cause a loss to the spiritual light and life force of that limb.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:37
[The Gate of Unity 12:37](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:37)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
Proof of this is [the fact that] a blind person can give birth to a whole person, as known.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:38
[The Gate of Unity 12:38](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:38)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
This [shows that] the spiritual [life force] is merely concealed, but still exists, hovering over the physical life force of the body.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:39
[The Gate of Unity 12:39](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:39)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
This is called “*Tzelem Ish* – The form of man.”

###### The Gate of Unity 12:40
[The Gate of Unity 12:40](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:40)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
This is similar to how the aforementioned [breadth and length of] knowledge, which is concealed, [encompasses the brief teaching] etc. (This is all explained elsewhere at length.)

###### The Gate of Unity 12:41
[The Gate of Unity 12:41](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:41)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
Likewise, when the spiritual power of movement comes into an [actual] physical movement, it becomes constrained within itself.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:42
[The Gate of Unity 12:42](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:42)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
Nonetheless, the physical movement is connected and bound to the spiritual [power of] movement.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:43
[The Gate of Unity 12:43](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:43)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
There are many other examples of this as well, such as the matter of having insight into a particular concept, which comes from the power of conceptualization [of his soul], which rests upon him in a concealed [fashion].

###### The Gate of Unity 12:44
[The Gate of Unity 12:44](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:44)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
However, [we must now] understand the aspect of the *Reshimu* – Impression, which indicates the withdrawal of everything into concealment, so that only an impression of everything remains.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:45
[The Gate of Unity 12:45](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:45)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
This is better understood through other analogies and matters. For example, it is like the blueprint⁸” and it is worthy to note that this shares the same root as “Blueprint – *Roshem*.” that the architect drafts.

footnotes:
⁸ The word for “Impression” is “Reshimu,

###### The Gate of Unity 12:46
[The Gate of Unity 12:46](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:46)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
He is capable of constructing the [entire] building from the small lines of the blueprint. The entire length of the construction is included briefly in the blueprint.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:47
[The Gate of Unity 12:47](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:47)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
Another example [of a *Reshimu-*impression] is like someone who makes a sign [for himself] as a memory aide.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:48
[The Gate of Unity 12:48](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:48)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
The sign [or mnemonic] has no [actual] relation to the essence of the matter, but is merely a memory aide, as stated,⁹ “Make signs for yourself.”

footnotes:
⁹ Jeremiah 31:20

###### The Gate of Unity 12:49
[The Gate of Unity 12:49](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:49)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
This is a much greater concealment than the [aforementioned analogy of someone who] teaches the summary of the law, which includes the entire [logic] within it.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:50
[The Gate of Unity 12:50](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:50)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
[For, in that example] there at least is some relationship between the short summary and the lengthy [explanations].

###### The Gate of Unity 12:51
[The Gate of Unity 12:51](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:51)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
There is another analogy for this *Reshimu*-Impression, which implies an even greater *Tzimtzum*-Restraint and concealment.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:52
[The Gate of Unity 12:52](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:52)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
It is like a person who throws a stone. The power that propels it is separate from the self [of the thrower].

###### The Gate of Unity 12:53
[The Gate of Unity 12:53](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:53)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
Nonetheless, the entire power of movement is invested within [the stone] in a concealed fashion.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:54
[The Gate of Unity 12:54](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:54)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
However, there is a great distance of separation from the essential power [of movement] in his hand.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:55
[The Gate of Unity 12:55](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:55)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
In contrast, this is not the case with the power of movement itself, when he physically moves himself.

###### The Gate of Unity 12:56
[The Gate of Unity 12:56](https://torahapp.org/share/book/The%20Gate%20of%20Unity/r/12:56)

**Translated by Rabbi Amiram Markel, 2023:**
[In this case] it is vested within the physical in a more revealed [manner], as mentioned previously.
