**וְהֶקֵּף** אַמָּה אַחַת סְבִיב מְקוֹם הַמַּעֲרָכָה, הוּא מְקוֹם הִלּוּךְ רַגְלֵי הַכֹּהֲנִים מִבְּלִי תֵּת שָׁם שׁוּם דָּבָר ¹ כְּלָל. שֶׁיִּהְיֶה מָקוֹם פָּנוּי לְהִלּוּךְ הַכֹּהֲנִים, שֶׁלֹּא יִכָּוּוּ בַּגֶּחָלִים, אוֹ יִכָּשְׁלוּ בְּנִתְחֵי הַקָּרְבָּנוֹת, אוֹ בְּגִזְרֵי הָעֵצִים.

There was an area 2 cubits wide on all sides of the 24 cubit square described in the previous section. One cubit of this space was designated as the area where *kohanim* would walk. It was a totally empty area,¹ to allow the *kohanim* to walk freely without being burnt or tripping over portions of the sacrificial animals or pieces of wood.
