**"וְהָיָה** מִגְרָשׁ לָעִיר צָפוֹנָה חֲמִשִּׁים וּמָאתַיִם (קָנִים), וְנֶגְבָּה חֲמִשִּׁים וּמָאתָיִם (קָנִים) וְקֵּדְמָה חֲמִשִּׁים וּמָאתָיִם (קָנִים), וְיָמָּה חֲמִשִּׁים וּמָאתָיִם (קָנִים)" (יחזקאל מח, יז). הִנֵּה שֶׁהָעִיר שֶׁהִיא ד' אֲלָפִים וְחָמֵשׁ מֵאוֹת קָנִים מְרוּבַּעַת, הִיא עִם מִגְרָשָׁהּ חֲמֵשֶׁת אֲלָפִים קָנִים עַל חֲמֵשֶׁת אֲלָפִים, וְהוּא מְמַלֵּא רֹחַב הָרְצוּעָה הַזֹּאת שֶׁבָּהּ הִיא הָעִיר.

“And the open space of the city will be 250 [measuring rods] in the north, 250 [measuring rods] in the south, 250 [measuring rods] in the east, and 250 [measuring rods] in the west.”¹ 48:17. The additions are taken from *Ras*hi’s commentary. The city itself covers an area of 4500 measuring rods by 5000 measuring rods. With its empty space, the city is a square, 5000 measuring rods by 5000 measuring rods.² The open space fills the width of the strip of land in which the city is located.
