אי לאו דמלכא את לא מימסרא ירושלים בידך - אע"ג דאכתי לא מימסרא בידו עד שבא טיטוס מ"מ כיון דכבר צר עליה שלש שנים והוה כפנא הוי כאילו כבר נמסרה:

**Tanslation by Rabbi Ephraim Piekarski:**
**If you are not a king, Jerusalem would not be handed over into your hands:** Even though it was not yet handed over into his hands until Titus arrived - since he already was besieging it three years and there was a famine, it was nevertheless as if it was already handed over.

ונעשה נס והיה דם כו' - להודיע דקשה לפני המקום חורבן בית המקדש:

**And a miracle was performed and blood, etc.:** To make known that the destruction of the Temple was arduous before the Omnipresent.

וניקר במוחו ז' שנים - לא נעשה טרפה בכך דדרך חוטמו נכנס ולא ניקב הקרום ועוד יש חילוק בין טריפות דאדם לבהמה כדפרישית בפרק קמא דערובין (דף ז.):

**And picked at his brain for seven years:** He did not become a *tereifa* (one who has a wound or condition that will lead to his death within twelve months) with this. For it entered through his nostril and did not pierce the membrane [of his brain]. Moreover (alternatively), there is a distinction between [what causes the condition of being a *tereifa* in] people and animals, as I explained in the first chapter of Eruvin (Tosafot on Eruvin 7a, s.v. Kegon).
