קדרה שהיא נתונה בצד האסקופה שאם תעלה ושפתיה משוכות מן השקוף כל שהוא טומאה בוקעת ועולה בוקעת ויורדת.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
A cooking pot that is placed on the side of the threshold [of a house] such that if it was raised and its rims were protruding from the lintel by even the smallest amount, the impurity breaks out and ascends, breaks out and descends.

היתה גבוהה מן הארץ טפח וטומאה תחתיה בתוכה או על גבה הכל טמא והבית טהור. בבית אינו טמא אלא הבית שאם תעלה ודופנה בשקוף בפותי טפח כל שהוא וטומאה תחתיה והיא רוצצת טומאה בוקעת ועולה בוקעת ויורדת.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
[If the cooking pot] was raised above the ground by a handbreadth, and impurity was under it, inside it, or on top of it, everything is impure, and the house is pure. [If the impurity is] in the house, only the house is impure. Should it be elevated and its wall (i.e., the rounded side of the cooking pot) touches* the lintel by less than an opening of a handbreadth by even the smallest amount,* and impurity is under it, and it is tightly packed, the impurity breaks through and ascends, [and] breaks through and descends.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
[If] it was raised above the ground by a handbreadth, and impurity was under it, inside it, or above it, the house is pure because it saved along with the "walls of a tent." Inside it or on top of it, everything is impure, and the house is pure. [If the impurity is] in the house, only the house is impure. [If it was placed] such that if it were raised and its wall would touch the lintel over a [space of] a handbreadth's opening, [and] impurity is under it, and it is tightly packed, impurity breaks forth and ascends, breaks forth and descends.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
[If] it was raised above the ground by a handbreadth, [and] impurity was under it or in the house, [the space] below it and the house are impure, [but the space] inside it or above it are pure (i.e., the same as with a *k'veret* (Mishnah Oholot 9:4)). [If impurity is] inside it or on top of it, everything is impure. [If it was placed] such that if it were raised and its rims [were to] cover up (lit., "its lips [were to] eat") the lintel in even the smallest amount, [and] impurity is inside of it, and it is tightly packed, impurity breaks forth and ascends, breaks forth and descends. [If] it was raised above the ground by a handbreadth, if [the cooking pot's] wall has a handbreadth's opening [within it] and impurity is under it, or in the house, inside it, or on top of it, everything is impure. [If] its wall does not have a handbreadth's opening [within it], [and] impurity is under it, [the space] under it is impure, and [the space] inside of it* and on top of it and the house are pure, because it saves along with the "walls of a tent." Inside of it or on top of it, everything is impure, and the house is pure, because it saves along with the "walls of a tent." Inside of it or on top of it, everything is impure and the house is pure. In the house, only the house is impure.

היתה נתונה תחת ארובה שאם תעלה ושפתיה נוגעות בתקרה כל שהוא טומאה תחתיה והיא רוצצת טומאה בוקעת ועולה בוקעת ויורדת. היתה גבוהה מן הארץ טפח וטומאה תחתיה או בבית או בתוכה או על גבה הכל טמא שאם תעלה עולה ויושבת בארובה ואופצת את כל. ארובה וטומאה תחתיה והיא רוצצת טומאה בוקעת ויורדת היתה גבוהה מן הארץ טפח טומאה תחתיה או בבית תחתיה והבית טמא תוכה וגבה טהור בתוכה או על גבה כנגדו עד לרקיע טמא שאם תעלה עולה והולכת בארובה אין בינה לארובה פותי טפח וטומאה והיא רוצצת טומאה בוקעת ועולה בוקעת ויורדת.

[If] it was placed under the aperture [of a roof], such that if it were raised and its rims were to touch the roof in any amount, [and] impurity is under it, and it is tightly packed, [then] impurity breaks forth and ascends, breaks forth and descends. [If] it was raised above the ground a handbreadth and impurity is under it, or in the house, or inside of it, or on top of it, everything is impure. [If it was placed] such that if it were raised upwards, and it sat in the aperture and closed up the [opening of the] entire aperture, and impurity is under it, and it is tightly packed, impurity breaks forth and ascends, breaks forth and descends. [If] it was raised above the ground by a handbreadth, [and] impurity is under it, or in the house under it, and the house is impure, [that which is] inside it or above it is pure. [If impurity is] inside it or directly above it, up until the firmament, [everything] is impure. [If it is placed] such that if it were raised upwards and it went into the aperture, [and] there is not at least a handbreadth's opening between it and the aperture, and impurity is [under it (MS Vienna)], and it is tightly packed, impurity breaks forth and ascends, breaks forth and descends.

[If it was placed] such that if it was raised upwards and goes up into the aperture, and there is between it and the aperture a handbreadth's opening, and impurity is under it, [and] it is tightly packed, impurity breaks forth and ascends, breaks forth and descends.

[If] it was raised above the ground by a handbreadth [and] impurity is under it, [the area] under it is impure; inside it, and above it, and the house are pure because they are adjudged to be likened to the sloping walls of tents. [If impurity is] inside it or on top of it, everything is impure, and the house is pure. [If impurity is] in the house, only the house is impure.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
An aperture that [opens up] to the [outside] air, and does not have (alt., "and has" (GR"A)) a handbreadth's opening, and an olive's-bulk of a corpse is placed under it, and he placed something that is susceptible to impurity [in the aperture]: If there is a handbreadth's opening there, everything is impure, and if not, it is not impure except that which is directly [above] the olive's-bulk of the corpse.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
An aperture that [opens up] to the [outside] air and does not have a handbreadth's opening, and an olive's-bulk of a corpse is placed under it, the house is impure and the one who overtents it is impure, the words of Rabbi Meir. Rabbi Yehuda says, the one who overtents it is pure. Rabbi Shimon says, if the impurity was [in position] before his leg [passed over] the aperture, the house is impure, and the one who overtents it is impure, and if not, the house is impure and the one who overtents it is pure. [If] some of the impurity is in the house and some is directly below the aperture, the house is impure and the one who overtents it is impure, the words of Rabbi Meir. Rabbi Yehuda and Rabbi Shimon say, the one who overtents it is pure. Rabbi Yosei says, if this is not [the type] of impurity that can be divided, such as an olive's bulk of the spinal column or the skull of a corpse, the house is impure [and the one who overtents it is pure (MS Vienna; GR"A)], and if not, the house is pure and the one who overtents it is impure.

Two half olive's-bulks, [one] placed inside the house, and one placed directly [below] the aperture: The one who overtents [the aperture] is pure. [If] the one that was placed inside the house is pushed [such that it is] directly [below] the aperture, it is as though everything is directly [below] the aperture.

כזית מן המת בפי העורב והאהיל על גבי ארובה שאין בה פותי טפח הבית טמא ר' יוסי מטהר עד שיהא בטומאה משך פותי טפח.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
An olive-bulk of a corpse in the mouth of a raven, and one who erects a tent on top of the aperture [of a roof] whose width is less than a handbreadth: The house is impure. Rabbi Yosei renders it pure until there is impurity of a handbreadth's width across.

קלל של חטאת שהוא נתון בארובה אם משולשל טמא ואם אינו משולשל טהור. בד"א בארובה שאין בה פותח טפח אבל בארובה שיש בה פותח טפח בין משולשל ובין שאינו משולשל טמא. בד"א בשל חרס אבל בשל אבן בין שיש בארובה פותי טפח בין משולשל ובין שאינו משולשל טהור.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
A vessel containing [the waters of] purification that is placed in the aperture: If it is lowered down [through the aperture], it is impure, and if it is not lowered down, it is pure. When do these words apply? In regards to an aperture that does not have an opening of a handbreadth, but in regards to to an aperture that has an opening of a handbreadth, whether it is lowered down or whether it is not lowered down, it is impure. When do these words apply? In regards to an earthenware [vessel], but as in regards to that of stone (alt., "wood" (GR"A)), whether or not it has an opening of a handbreadth, and whether or not it is lowered down, it is pure.

שבין הבית לעליה ואין בה פותח טפח טומאה בבית כלים שבעליה טהורין טומאה בעליה כלים שבבית טהורין שאני רואה את הקורות כאילו הן יורדות וסותמות דבר אחר אין טומאה נכנסת לאהל ואין יוצאה הימנו אלא בפותח טפח. כלים שכנגד הבית רבי מטמא וחכמים מטהרין אמר רבי רואה אני את דבריהם מדברי.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
[An aperture] that is between the house and the attic, and there is not a handbreadth's opening in [the aperture], [and] impurity is in the house, vessels that are in the attic are pure. [If] impurity is in the attic, vessels that are in the house are pure, for I could view the roof-beams as though they descend and close off [the opening]. Another reason: Impurity can neither enter a tent nor leave a tent except through a handbreadth's opening. Vessels that are directly above the house: Rebbi renders them impure and the Sages render them pure. Said Rebbi, I prefer their words to my words.

ארובות זו על גב זו ויש בהן פותח טפח ונתון דבר שהוא מקבל טומאה אם יש שם פותח טפח הכל טמא ואם לאו אין טמא אלא כנגד התחתונה בלבד מרחיבות מלמעלה ומצירות מלמטה מן הצד ומלטה טמא מן הצד ומלעלה טהור. מרחיבות מלמטה ומצירות מלמעלה אינו טמא אלא כנגד הצר בלבד.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
[Two] apertures, this one on top of that one, and they have a handbreadth's opening, and something that is susceptible to impurity is placed [directly under them], if there is a handbreadth's opening, everything is impure, and if not, only that which is directly [below] the lower one is impure. [If] they are wide from the top and narrow from the bottom, from the narrow part* and below is impure; from the narrow part and above is pure. [If] they are wide from the bottom and narrow from the top, there is only impurity directly [below] the narrow part.
