A Jew who slaughtered an impure animal for a Gentile, [and] he slaughtered it [by cutting] two (i.e., the two *simanim*, the trachea and esophagus), or the majority of two, and [the animal] is still twitching, it defiles with the impurity of food, but not with the impurity of carrion. A limb that is separated from it is like one that separates from the living (i.e., a live animal), and flesh that separates from it is like [flesh] that separates from the living, and it is forbidden to Noachides, and even if the animal dies. [If it was killed] by stabbing, it [only] defiles with the impurity of food. [If] he slaughtered it with something that rendered it a *tereifa*, it has no impurity whatsoever.
And a Gentile who slaughtered a pure animal for a Jew, and slaughtered it [by cutting] two or the majority of two, and it is still twitching, it defiles with the impurity of food but not with the impurity of carrion. And a limb that separates from it is like one that separates from the living, and flesh that separates from it is like [flesh] that separates from the living, and it is forbidden to Noachides, and even if the animal dies. [If it was killed] by stabbing, it defiles with the impurity of food. [If] he slaughtered [only] one [*siman*], or the majority of one, it has no impurity whatsoever. [If] he slaughtered it with something that does not render it a *tereifa*, and a Jew came and completed [the slaughter], it is permitted to eat. [If] a Jew slaughtered two or the majority of two with [something that does not render the animal a *tereifa*], it is the same for both the Gentile and the Jew: He may cut flesh from it, and wait until it dies, and [the cut flesh] is permitted for eating.

The "ladleful of corpse-mold" that they spoke of (Mishnah Oholot 2:1) exists from the finger-joints and upwards, the words of Rabbi Meir. And the Sages say, from the hollow of his hand. And what is a corpse that has corpse-mold? One who is buried naked in a stone coffin on top of the floor, or on top of a marble slab, but one who is buried with his clothing and in a wooden coffin on top of dirt does not have corpse-mold. And they remove dirt from under him, and that is "dirt of the graves," a ladleful and [a little] more (ibid.). Mixed blood* that is found in a grave but it is unknown what kind [of blood] it is: That is "dirt of the graves," a ladleful and [a little] more. Rabbi Elazar b'Rabbi Tzadok explained, you separate the pebbles and the wood chips, and you remove that which is certainly [not dirt of the grave], and you leave that which is doubtful, and that is "dirt of the graves," a ladleful and [a little] more.

A spinal column, the majority of whose vertebrae were sawed off: Even though the structure [of the spine] remains intact, it is pure. [But] whenever it is inside a grave, even if it is broken, and even if it is crushed, it is impure, because the grave joins it together [with other sources of impurity].

A skull that has a long puncture-wound, or that had many puncture-wounds: They combine together [to constitute] the size of a drill hole. Said Rabbi Yosei ben HaMeshullam, it so happened that in Ein Bul, there was one whose skull had [a piece] broken off, and the doctor brought him a patch made of a pumpkin shell, and he survived. Rabbi Shimon ben Elazar said to him, that is no proof. Even though he survived all the days of that year, once there was a rainfall, he caught cold on it (i.e., the patched skull), and he died.

An olive's bulk of flesh that separates from a limb of the living (i.e., a living person): Rabbi Eliezer says, it transmits impurity. They came back to Rabbi Eliezer with three (alt., "two" (GR"A)) responses. "No. If you are comparing this situation to a corpse* that [transmits impurity if it] possesses the greater part of a quarter-kav of corpse-mold*, can you say the same regarding a limb of the living, which does not [transmit impurity if it] possesses [the greater part of] a quarter-kav of corpse-mold?" Another matter: "Who dangles from whom? Does the limb of the living dangle from the flesh, or does the flesh dangle from the limb? The flesh dangles from the limb! Can it be possible that the flesh would transmit impurity by touch and by carrying and by [being under] a tent, while the limb [itself] remains pure?" Said Rabbi Shimon: "I would be astonished if Rabbi Eliezer [really did] render [an olive's bulk of flesh from the limb of the living] impure. Rather, he did not render it impure except in a situation where the limb possesses a sufficient quantity of flesh, such that both this and that (i.e., the limb and the flesh) may transmit impurity by touch and carrying and by [being under] a tent.

A bone the size of a barleycorn that separates from a limb of the living: Rabbi Nechunia renders it impure. They came back to Rabbi Nechunia with three (alt., "two" (GR"A)) responses. "No. If you are comparing this situation to a corpse that [transmits impurity if it] possesses [the greater part of] a quarter-kav of corpse-mold, can you say the same regarding a limb of the living, which does not [transmit impurity if it] possesses [the greater part of] a quarter-kav of corpse-mold?" Can it be possible that the flesh would transmit impurity by touch and by carrying and by [being under] a tent, while the limb [itself] remains pure?" Said Rabbi Shimon: "I would be astonished if Rabbi Nechunia [really did] render [a bone the size of a barleycorn that separates from the limb of the living] impure. Rather, he did not render it impure except in a situation where the limb [itself] possesses a bone the size of a barleycorn, such that both this and that (i.e., the limb and the flesh) may transmit impurity by touch and carrying and by [being under] a tent. Rabbi Yehoshua responded to the words of both of them: "Just as just as the living has 248 limbs, bone and flesh that separate from it are pure, does it not follow that [in regards to] a limb, which does not contain 248 [limbs within it], that the bone and flesh and separate from it should be pure?" Rebbi responded to the words of Rabbi Yehoshua: "No. If you hold that in regards to [bones and flesh that] separate from the living, that they certainly separated from something that is pure, can you say the same as to that which separates from a limb [of the living], which certainly separated from something that is impure?"
