###### Tosefta Oholot 5:1
[Tosefta Oholot 5:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Tosefta%20Oholot/r/5:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
Rabbi Yishmael b'Rabbi Yosei says in the name of Rabbi Natan: [In regards to] a tent that is less than four handbreadths, its opening [for purposes of permitting impurity to escape] is its full width and its roof is pure. Rabbi Shimon ben Elazar says in the name of Rabbi Meir, a corpse that is more than four handbreadths, [the requisite size of its] opening is the entire open space. Rabbi Yosei says, the spinal column and the skull are the equivalent of a corpse [for purposes of impurity]. Others say in the name of Rabbi Natan, all the impurities that spread out from a corpse are like a corpse, and its opening is four handbreadths.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
A drainpipe that is arched under the house (הבית): If it is four handbreadths wide and has an outlet four handbreadths wide, and [there is] a miscarried fetus inside it, the house remains pure. [If there is] a miscarried fetus in the house, whatever is inside [the drainpipe] remains pure. [If] it has a width of four handbreadths, but its outlet is less than four handbreadths, [and there is] a miscarried fetus inside it, the house is impure. [If there is] a miscarried fetus in the house, whatever is inside [the drainpipe] remains pure. [If] it is less than four handbreadths wide and its outlet is less than four handbreadths wide, [and there is] a miscarried fetus inside it, the house is impure. [If there is] a miscarried fetus inside the house, whatever is inside [the drainpipe] is impure. [If] it is wide from within but narrow from without, [and] the impurity is in the wide part, the house is impure. [If] in the narrow part, it is adjudged half and half. [If] it is impure, whether in the wide part or whether in the narrow part of the house, it is impure inside the house.* Vessels that are in the wide part are pure, and those that are in the narrow part are impure. Rabbi Yehuda agrees that with regards to crags and crevices, that although they are not similar to a tent, yet they are considered to be [halachically] like a tent (see Mishnah Oholot 3:7).

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
A cupboard standing either in the house or in the open air: [If] the impurity is inside it, vessels within its thickness (i.e., within niches in the walls of the cupboard) are pure. Impurity that is in its thickness: Vessels that are within (i.e., within the main body of the cupboard but not within the thickness) are pure. And Rabbi Yosei says, it is divided half and half. [If] it was standing inside the house, and the impurity was inside it, the house is impure. [If] the impurity was in the house, whatever is inside [the cupboard] is pure, for the nature of impurity is to go out, and its nature is not to enter. Vessels that are [lodged] between it and the ground, or that are between it and the wall [of the house], or that are between it and the roof-beam: If there exists there an opening of one handbreadth, they are impure, and if not, they are pure. [If] the impurity is there*, the house is impure. That which is within the wall and outward, and that which is in the plasterwork [in the ceiling] and above is adjudged [by the rule of] half and half.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
Impurity under [the cupboard's] leg or on top of its leg, and [the cupboard] is tightly packed*, the impurity breaks through and ascends, [and] breaks through and descends. To what is this similar? To a column that stands inside the house, and impurity is beneath it, and it is tightly packed (i.e., flush with the floor), the impurity breaks through and ascends, [and] breaks through and descends. [If] he was transporting it on its side and it is closed, and the impurity is under it, opposite its thickness, or on top of its doors, and it is tightly packed, the impurity breaks through and ascends, [and] breaks through and descends. Vessels that are in niches of partition walls, on this side or on that side, are pure.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
[If the cupboard] was standing inside the entrance [of the house] and opened up toward the outside, [and] the impurity is inside it, the house is pure. [If] the impurity [is in the house], that which is inside [the cupboard] is pure, for the nature of impurity is to go out, and its nature is not to enter. Said Rabbi Yosei, this is indeed the halacha. When is the power to save (i.e., to prevent impurity from spreading) greater than the power of a tightly fitting lid or the power of tents? If it saves, it [also] has the power of a tightly fitting lid in regards to a tombstone, and by *a fortiori* reasoning, on account of tenting.

###### Tosefta Oholot 5:6
[Tosefta Oholot 5:6](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Tosefta%20Oholot/r/5:6)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
[If the cupboard's] wheel-base protruded behind it three fingerbreadths, and impurity is there (i.e., in the wheel-base) under the roof-beams, the house is impure*, for I can view the roof-beams as though they descend [to up floor] and are stopped up. Another version: Impurity does not enter into a tent and only exits from it through an opening [the width] of a handbreadth. § Vessels that are opposite the corner [of two adjoining walls]: Rebbi renders them impure and the Sages render them pure. Said Rebbi, "I prefer their words to my words." When do these words apply? With regard to one that is burst open, but with regard to one that is stopped up, behold, it is like a sealed grave, and it is defiled by everything that is around it.

###### Tosefta Oholot 5:7
[Tosefta Oholot 5:7](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Tosefta%20Oholot/r/5:7)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
Said Rabbi Yosei, Rabbi Yochanan ben Nuri came to the place of Rabbi Chalafta. He said to him, "What is your opinion about the eye of an oven?" He said to him, "It is impure." He said to him, "Even I say that, but Akiva holds that it's pure." The eye of an oven that is higher than a handbreadth but is not wider than a handbreadth, or which is not higher than a handbreadth, is pure. [If] he placed a board on top of a cleft, it is impure. The board is defiled and it defiles the oven.

###### Tosefta Oholot 5:8
[Tosefta Oholot 5:8](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Tosefta%20Oholot/r/5:8)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
An *aruvah** between [the lower floor of] the house and the attic, and a cooking pot is placed on it, and it is punctured to allow liquids to enter: Rabbi Akiva says it saves (i.e., prevents the impurity in the lower floor from spreading to the attic, and the Sages say, it does not save. If it was opened such that olives could come out [through the puncture-hole], it saves up until an opening of a handbreadth.*

###### Tosefta Oholot 5:9
[Tosefta Oholot 5:9](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Tosefta%20Oholot/r/5:9)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
[A reed tube that was cut to hold waters of purification (Kel. 17:17),*], and he poured waters of purification and ashes of purification inside of it: It saves on account of the purification [mixture] but it does not save on account of terumah; thus, it comes out that you could say, "The pure saves itself." How so? If there were [two vessels, one which was pure for purification, and one which was pure for terumah (GR"A)], it comes out that the vessel that was pure for purification saves itself, and the vessel that was pure for terumah saves itself.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
A flask that [was defiled by corpse-impurity (Mishnah Oholot 5:4) and] is full of pure liquid, and one poured it out into another flask: If [the second flask] had liquid inside of it, it is impure*. A woman who was kneading in a kneading-trough, and her hands were [constantly] occupied with another dough, as long as she lifts up this one and sets down that one, [or] lifts up that one and sets down this one, the woman and the kneading-trough are impure with seven-day impurity, and the dough is pure. [If] she removed her hands from it and [then] returned them, she is defiled and she defiles the dough. Said Rabbi Yehoshua: "We were ashamed* was ashamed" (MS Vienna) by your words, Beit Shammai. Could it be possible for the woman and the kneading-trough to be impure with seven-day impurity, while the dough is pure? [Similarly, in the case of the flask, if] she removed her hands from it and [then] returned them, and defiled the flask*, should they be impure with seven-day impurity, while the liquid is pure?" After he had stood up, one student from among the students of Beit Shammai said before him, "Rabbi, may I speak before you the reason that Beit Shammai hold this way?" He said to him, "Speak." He said to him, "Vessels of amei ha'aratz*, what is their [presumptive] status, impure or pure?" He said to him, "Impure." "And if it is impure, does it save? If so, [the vessel of the am ha'aretz] will save with those of a chaver*." Another version: "And what would an am ha'aretz say about his vessel, that it is impure? [Rather,] once we have rendered pure the food and drink inside it, we have rendered [the vessel] itself pure. But once you have rendered the vessel pure [ab initio], you have rendered both yours and his pure." Rabbi Yehoshua retracted and began teaching according to the words of that student. Said Rabbi Yehoshua, "I humble myself before you, bones of Beit Shammai."
