## Tosefta Oholot Chapter 6

ר' יהודה אומר משם ר' יהושע כשם שהכלים מצילין עם אוהלין שיש להן דפנות כך מצילין עם אוהלים שאין להן דפנות אחד כלי עץ ואחד כלי חרס טהורין. בד"א בכלי שיש בו טפח על טפח אבל בכלי שאין בו טפח על טפח אינו מציל. בד"א בזמן שהוא אפוץ מבחוץ מצד אחד ומבפנים משני צדדים אבל אם היה אפוץ כחצי טפח מכאן וכחצי טפח מכאן ה"ז אינו מציל.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
Rabbi Yehuda says in the name of Rabbi Yehoshua, just as vessels save with respect to tents that have walls, so too they save with respect to tents that have no walls. Wooden vessels and earthenware vessels are both pure [and thereby save food, liquids, and other vessels within them (see Kel. 5:1)]. When do these words apply? With a vessel that has a handbreadth by a handbreadth [cavity] within it, but with a vessel that does not have a handbreadth by a handbreadth [cavity] within it, it does not save. When do these words apply? At a time that it is tightly sealed from the outside on one side, or from the inside on two sides; but if it was [only] tightly sealed equivalent to half a handbreadth on this side and equivalent to half a handbreadth on that side, behold, it does not save.

קדרה שהיא נתונה בצד דופנו של אוהל מבחוץ טומאה תחתיה והיא רוצצת טומאה בוקעת ועולה בוקעת ויורדת היתה גבוהה מן הארץ טפח טומאה תחתיה תחתיה טמא תוכה וגבה טהור מפני שהיא מצלת עם דופנו של אוהל בתוכה או על גבה הכל טמא.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
A cooking-pot that is placed on on the outer side of the wall of a tent, [and] the impurity is beneath it, and it is tightly packed, the impurity breaks through and ascends, [and] breaks through and descends. [If] it was one handbreadth higher than the ground, [and] the impurity is beneath it, [the area] beneath it is impure, [but the area] within it and above it is pure, because it saves along with the wall of the tent. [If the impurity] is inside it or above it, everything is impure.

היתה כפושה טומאה תחתיו והיא רוצצת טומאה בוקעת ועולה בוקעת ויורדת. היתה גבוהה מן הארץ טפח וטומאה תחתיה תחתיה טמא תוכה וגבה טהור מפני שהיא נידונית כשפועי אוהלין בתוכה או על גבה כנגדו עד הרקיע טמא. היתה נתונה על גבי שתי יתדות מבחוץ משוכה הימנו בפותח טפח אינה מצלת בפחות מטפח ר"ע אומר מצלת וחכ"א אינה מצלת: כותל שמקצתו משמש לבית ומקצתו משמש לגינה היתה נתונה בצד המשמש לבית מצלת בית המשמש לגינה אינה מצלת.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
[If] there was a large inverted basket [placed on the outer side of the wall of a tent (Mishnah Oholot 5:7)], and the impurity is beneath it, and it is tightly packed, the impurity breaks through and ascends, [and] breaks through and descends. . [If] it was one handbreadth higher than the ground, [and] the impurity is beneath it, [the area] beneath it is impure, [but the area] within it and above it is pure, because it is adjudged to be like the sloping parts of tents (see Mishnah Oholot 7:2). [If the impurity] is within it or on top of it, that which is directly above it, up to the firmament, is impure. [If the basket] was placed on top of two pegs from outside [the tent], pushed out from the opening [of the tent] by a handbreadth, it does not save. By less than a handbreadth: Rabbi Akiva says, it saves, and the Sages say, it does not save. A wall [separating a house from a garden], part of which serves the house, and part of which serves the garden, [and the basket] was placed on the side that serves the house, it saves the house [from impurity]; [but if it was placed on the side] that services the garden, it does not save.

קורה שהיא נתונה מכותל לכותל וקדרה בה אם אין בין פיה לקורה פותח טפח הרי זו מצלת אם יש בין פיה לקורה פותח טפח אינה מצלת. היתה אפוצה בארץ ובקורה אם אין בין פיה לקורה פותח טפח הרי זו מצלת אם יש בין פיה לקורה פותח טפח אינה מצלת. היה פיה למעלה מודבק לקורה הרי זו מצלת משוכה הימנו בפותח טפח אינה מצלת פחות מטפח ר"ע אומר מצלת וחכ"א אינה מצלת. אבא שאול אומר בזו מחלוקת היה ראש אחד נתון על כותלו של בית וראשה אחד נתון על כותלו של גנה היתה בצד המשמש לבית מצלת בצד המשמש לגינה אינה מצלת אבא שאול אומר אף בזו היא מחלוקת.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
A beam that is laid from one wall to another wall, and a cooking pot with it: If there is not an opening of a handbreadth between its mouth (i.e., of the cooking pot) and the beam, behold, it saves. If there is an opening of a handbreadth between its mouth and the beam, behold, it does not save. [If the cooking pot] was pressed tightly into the ground and onto the beam, if there is not an opening of a handbreadth between its mouth and the beam, behold, it saves. If there is an opening of a handbreadth between its mouth and the beam, it does not save. [If] its mouth was cleaved to the beam from above, behold, it saves; [but if] it was pushed away from it by an opening of a handbreadth, it does not not save. Less than a handbreadth: Rabbi Akiva says, it saves, and the Sages say, it does not save. Abba Shaul says, there was a dispute as to this.* [If] one end [of the beam] was placed onto the wall of a house, and one end was placed onto the wall of a garden, [if the cooking pot] was on the side that serves the house, it saves; on the side that serves the garden, it does not save. Abba Shaul says, even as to this, there was a dispute.
