###### Tosefta Ta'anit 1:1
[Tosefta Ta'anit 1:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Tosefta%20Ta%27anit/r/1:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
We ask for the rains until Nissan is over, as it says, "And rain will fall for you, the earlier and latter rains during the first [month] (Yoel 2);" [these are] the words of Rabbi Meir. And the Sages say,"Earlier rains [fall in] Marcheshvan, and latter rains [fall on] the first of Nissan (and so these dates are the timetable for prayers for rain). Rabbi Meir said to them, "Knowing that a tree makes fruit for twelve [months], and produce [grows] for six months; what have we found with trees, as it says [about it], "By its month (meaning halfway through the month), it will bear (Yechezkel 47)," so too produce, at its fifteenth day [its season ends]. Haven't you learnt, that earlier and latter rains [fall throughout] Nissan.

###### Tosefta Ta'anit 1:2
[Tosefta Ta'anit 1:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Tosefta%20Ta%27anit/r/1:2)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
From when do we start asking for rains? From when the time of the rains comes. If it was a lacking year (meaning, a year with 353 days as opposed to 354), we give it its lack (the extra day it should have had). If not, it goes according to its set schedule: [All of this goes by] the words of Rabbi [Yehudah haNasi]. Rabban Shimon ben Gamaliel says, "Actually, they go according to their set schedule [all the time]." If it was a leap year, we give it its extra.

###### Tosefta Ta'anit 1:3
[Tosefta Ta'anit 1:3](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Tosefta%20Ta%27anit/r/1:3)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
What is considered the first rain (heb. R'viah)? [Rabbi Meir says, "An early one (lit. a firstborn) [falls] by the third [of Marcheshvan]; a middle one [falls] by the seventh; [and] a late one (lit. a dark one) [falls] by the seventeenth." Rabbi Yehudah says, "An early one [falls] by the seventh; a middle one [falls] by the seventeenth; [and] a late one [falls] by the twenty-third." Rabbi Yose says, An early one [falls] by the seventeenth; a middle one [falls] by the twenty-third; [and] a late one [falls] by Rosh Chodesh Kislev."] And so, Rabbi Yose would say, "The individuals do not fast until Rosh Chodesh Kislev."

###### Tosefta Ta'anit 1:4
[Tosefta Ta'anit 1:4](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Tosefta%20Ta%27anit/r/1:4)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
What is considered the second rain? Once the [normal] time for rain has arrived, the words of Rabbi Meir. And the Sages say, once the [second] rain has fallen. Rabbi Yosei says, everything that depends on rainfall, once the [normal] time for rain has arrived; and for anything that does not depend on rainfall, once the second rain has fallen. Rabban Shimon ben Gamaliel says, [as to] rains than fell for seven days, one after another, without stopping, they are [considered to be] of sufficient quantity for second rain. How much rain must fall to be [considered to be] of sufficient quantity for second rain? [Enough] to fill a vessel of three handbreadths, the words of Rabbi Meir. Rabbi Yehuda says, one [handbreadth] for the first, two for the second, and three for the "rains" (alt., "third rain"; see Lieberman). Said Rabbi Shimon ben Elazar, there is no rain as to which each and every handbreadth from above is not countered by two handbreadths from [below] the earth, and thus it says (Ps. 42:8), "Depth calls to depth [at the roar of Your cataracts]." Why is it called *r'viah*? Because it fertilizes (*rova'at*) the earth.

###### Tosefta Ta'anit 1:5
[Tosefta Ta'anit 1:5](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Tosefta%20Ta%27anit/r/1:5)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
All who said [that after the first three fasts of Kislev had passed without rain, then for the next three fasts] they may eat and drink while it is still day, [but] they are forbidden from working, bathing, and anointing, from wearing shoes (lit., "sandals"), [and] from marital relations (Taan. 1:6), the day is forbidden for work but the night is permitted. From where is it derived that the day follows after the night? As it is said (Esther 4:16), "Go assemble all the Jews who are found in Shushan... [Do not eat or drink for three days -- *night and day*]." All those who said [that for the three fasts ordained after the 17th of Cheshvan (Taan. 1:4)], they may eat and drink once it gets dark, [and] they are permitted in working, bathing, and anointing, and in wearing shoes, [and] in marital relations, they may eat and drink until eastern [horizon] can be seen, the words for Rebbi. Rabbi Elazar b'Rabbi Shimon says, until the crow of the rooster. [But if] he slept and got up, he is forbidden immediately. All those who said they are forbidden from wearing shoes, one may put on shoes upon leaving a city, and remove them upon arriving to [another] city, and you may say the same regarding ostracism and mourning.

###### Tosefta Ta'anit 1:6
[Tosefta Ta'anit 1:6](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Tosefta%20Ta%27anit/r/1:6)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
Who is an "individual" (i.e., one who can take it upon himself to fast for rain on behalf of the general public (see Taan. 1:4))? Rabbi Shimon ben Elazar says, [not just] anyone who wishes to make himself an individual may do so -- [but] a Torah scholar may do so -- unless the Beit Din entrusts him on behalf of the general public. Rabban Shimon ben Gamaliel says, [in regards to] a matter of suffering, one who wishes to make himself an individual may do so, and a Torah scholar may [also] do so, and he will bring blessing upon himself. [But as to] a matter as to which one obtains a benefit, not anyone who wishes to make himself an individual may do so -- but a Torah scholar may do so -- unless the Beit Din entrusts him on behalf of the general public.

###### Tosefta Ta'anit 1:7
[Tosefta Ta'anit 1:7](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Tosefta%20Ta%27anit/r/1:7)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
Rabbi Shimon ben Elazar in the name of Rabbi Meir, and so too would Rabbi Dosa say according to his words: Half of Tishrei, Marcheshvan, and half of Kislev is the planting season. Half of Kislev, and Tevet, and half of Shevat is the winter. Half of Shevat, and Adar, and half of Nisan is the cold season. Half of Nisan, Iyar, and half of Sivan is the harvest season. Half of Sivan, Tammuz, and half of Av is the summer. Half of Av, Elul, and half of Tishrei is the hot season. Rabbi Yehuda would reckon [the seasons starting] from Marcheshvan. Rabbi Shimon reckons from Tishrei.

###### Tosefta Ta'anit 1:8
[Tosefta Ta'anit 1:8](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Tosefta%20Ta%27anit/r/1:8)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
The order [of the service] for fast days -- how [is it performed]? They take out the Ark to the open space of the city, and place burnt ashes on it. And they would not take turns (מתחלפין (see Lieberman)); rather, one person would sit and watch over it the whole day. The Elder who is with them says before them words of encouragement: "My sons, a person may be ashamed for his fellow, but a person should not be ashamed for his deeds. It is better that a person be ashamed for his fellow, and let him and his children not persist in hunger, and so it says (Is. 58:3), 'Why did we fast and You did not see? We afflicted our souls, and You did not know?' What can be inferred from this? 'Because on your fast day, [you pursue your business and exact all your payments]. Because you fast for strife and contentiousness, etc. Is such the fast that I desire, a day that a person afflicts his soul, etc.? Rather, this is the fast that I choose: To unfasten the bonds of wickedness, etc.' (Is. 58:3-6.) If there is a *sheretz* in a person's hand, even if he were to immerse it in the Shiloah, and in all the waters of Creation, he would not be purified. [But] if he casts a *sheretz* from his hand, he may immerse himself in [a mikveh of] forty *seah* of water, [and his immersion] is effective. And thus it says (Prov. 28:13), 'He who confesses and forsakes [his transgressions] will be granted mercy.' And it says (Lam. 3:41), 'Let us lift up our hearts with our palms, etc.'"

###### Tosefta Ta'anit 1:9
[Tosefta Ta'anit 1:9](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Tosefta%20Ta%27anit/r/1:9)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
He recites before them twenty-four [blessings], eighteen that are [recited] every day, [and] he would add six. The seventh: In the name of Summachos they said, "Who humbles the haughty," where is it [placed]? Between "Who redeems Israel" and "Who heals the sick." They answer "amen" for each and every blessing. They [sound the shofar with] *tekiah*, *teruah*, and *tekiah*. So were they accustomed in the outlying areas, [but] in the Temple, what did they recite? "Blessed art Thou, Hashem, God of Israel, from Eternity until Eternity," and they do not answer "amen" in the Temple. From where is it derived that they do not answer "amen' in the Temple? As it is said (Neh. 9:5), "Arise and bless Hashem your God, etc." From where is it derived, for each and every blessing and each and every prayer? A it is said (ibid.), "Exalted over every blessing and prayer." [Meaning] over each and every blessing, and over each and every prayer.

###### Tosefta Ta'anit 1:10
[Tosefta Ta'anit 1:10](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Tosefta%20Ta%27anit/r/1:10)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
For [the conclusion of] the first [of the six blessings], he recites, "Blessed be Hashem, God of Israel, from Eternity until Eternity. Blessed be the Redeemer of Israel." And they answer after him, "Blessed be the name of His glorious kingdom, etc." And the sexton of the congregation says to them, "Sound *tekiah*!" The Priests sounded the *tekiah*, and he returns and says to them, "He Who answered Abraham on Mount Moriah, He will answer you and He will listen to the sound of your wails on this day." They [then] sound *tekiah* and *teruah*. For the second [blessing], he recites, "Blessed be Hashem, God of Israel, from Eternity until Eternity. Blessed be He Who remembers the forgotten." And they answer after him, "Blessed be the name of His glorious kingdom, [etc.]." The sexton of the congregation says to them, "Sound *teruah*, sons of Aaron!" They sounded *teruah*, and he returns and says to them, "He Who answered Moses and our forefathers at the Sea of Reeds, He will answer you and He will listen to the sound of your wails on this day." They [then] sound *tekiah* and *teruah* and *tekiah*. One *tekiah* and one *teruah* until everyone finishes. Thus did Rabbi Chalafta conduct [the service] in Tzippori, and Rabbi Chanina ben Teradion in Sachni, but when the matter came before the Sages, they said, "They only conducted [the service] in this manner in the eastern gates [of the Temple]."
