**hen you can trust that the pleasure** -- i.e. the joy of doing a mitzvah, that we should know that through it, we will attain the delights of Olam Haba, a pleasure which is everlasting, without any mixture of grief. **for grief ... everlasting and unceasing pain** -- If you see that your evil inclination overpowers you and you are not able to repel it, that is certainly a lasting pain. It is proper to feel grief. And all the more so, if you actually stumbled in deed - and to find solace in this through repentance.

**שתהיה בענין שמביא אל הענין *שיצערך**כצ"ל. ור"ל שירא מדבר שמביא אל ענין שיצטער ממנו בסופו ולא יהיה ממנו אחרית טוב באופן שאינו יכול לדחות ממנו אותו הצער אעפ"י שעתה נראה הדבר ישר לפניו. וכמאמר החכם (משלי ט״ז:כ״ה) יש דרך ישר לפני איש ואחריתה דרכי מות. ולכן צריך לפחד תמיד שלא יגיע דבר עבירה ממעשיו. לאפוקי בעניני עוה"ז שאין רשאי לפחד על הנולד ממנו רק יבטח בה' וע"ז אמרו חז"ל כל המפחד חוטא הוא:

i.e. to fear something which leads him to something eventually painful and which will not have a good end, and that he does not have the ability to avert that painful thing, even though right now it seems proper, as the wise man said: "there is a way that seems right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death" (Mishlei 16:25). Therefore, one must fear always [to be careful] that his deeds will not result in sin. This is to exclude matters of this world, whereby it is not permitted to fear events. Rather, trust in G-d. On this our sages said (Berachos 60a): "whoever fears is a sinner".

**אך מקום התקוה שתשתדלי וכו'**ר"ל התקוה שהיא אבירות ובטחון ישתדל בענינים המביאים לו באחריתו גמול עוה"ב. אע"פ שידמה בעיניו שיגיע לו איזה נזק בעסקי עוה"ז יקוה לאל שיגן בעדו:

i.e. hope which is strength and trust - to busy himself in things whose end is the reward of Olam Haba, even though it appears to his eyes that these things will harm his secular affairs, let him hope to G-d that He will shield him.

**ואמרו ז"ל כל העושה טובה למי שאינה מכירה**הוא במדרש משלי על פסוק כצרור אבן במרגמה כן נותן לכסיל כבוד אמר רבי אלכסנדרי כל מי שחולק כבוד לכסיל כאלו זורק אבן למרקוליס. נ"ל פירושו שהזורק אבן למרקוליס. שאע"פ שזריקת אבן הוא בזיון גדול שרוגם אותה באבנים. עכ"ז מאחר שע"ז זו דרכה וחפצה בכך האיש ההוא ישא עונו. וכמו כן אע"ש שזה שעושה טובה לחברו נראה כאלו טוב עשה בעמו. עכ"ז מאחר שזה המקבל אין דרכו וחפצו בכך יחשב לו לעון שאפשר שזה שאינו חפץ בטובה ירע יותר בעבורה כמו המוכיח ללץ שמתלוצץ עליו ומתחזק יותר באולתו ונמצא שחוטא יותר:
