even though you said it is impossible to fully understand this mystery, nevertheless, help me to understand a bit so that I may grasp some understanding of it. And just like your analogy of the sun, where if one's eyes are not so weak, it is enough for him a thin veil to protect his eyes. **אלא בענינים מיוחדים באדם להם בעת התחברותם אליך**ר"ל מלבד בענינים פרטיים שבאדם של אלו הנגידים והפקידים. בעת שיתחברו הענינים אליך. שאז אינם שומעים לך. והענינים האלו הם ההכרח והגזירה. ר"ל חפץ ה' ורצונו שלפעמים בקצת הענינים יהיו כל כחותיך תחת ממשלת ה' יתיר לו מה שיחפוץ וימנעהו ממה שאינו חפץ וכן בדבורו וראותו וכל חושיו נמצא לפעמים ממשלת ה' עליו ומטהו נגד רצונו וכמ"ש המחבר בפ' שלפני זה בד"ה אמר השכל אין במה שזכרת וכו'. ופירוש המפרש שכוונתו על הכחות שאינם תלוים בבחירת האדם כמו המושך והמחזיק, הוא הבל. דמה ענין ההכרח הזה אל גמול ועונש ואין לפירוש הזה טעם וריח:

**except in certain matters** -- i.e. sometimes all your powers are in G-d's hands. He will allow you to do certain things which He wishes and prevent you from doing things which He does not wish. **Their relation to you...** -- i.e. even though you are forced to engage in matters to further your body's welfare, nevertheless, you have no benefit whatsoever from the body and its powers in respect to your essential being. The body is like the embryonic sack, or the egg-shell which is needed incidentally while the embryo is not yet complete. So too your body is needed only for the duration of your stay in this world so that you may complete the matter of your soul.

since he is coming to purify himself, and sees his entire existence in this world in order to serve his Creator, behold, all the permitted pleasures he partakes of this world will also be counted for him as a mitzvah. For he is rectifying and strengthening his body for the service of the Creator. And likewise, the opposite, if he rebels against G-d with his faculties and chases after his heart's evil lusts, behold all his permitted pleasures will be added to his sins, in that he used his body to rebel the advice of G-d.

**מסכימים על רצונך וכו'**ותוסיפי בהם שמחה וששון. ר"ל שמאחר שבאת לטמא את עצמך הנה כל הכחות והמשרתים שבגופך יהיו רגילים להתאות תאוה. וכל מעשיך יסיתוך על שמחה וששון כפי רגילותם עד שיום יום יחטיאו אותך יותר עד כי יטו טבעך וגופך בטבע קיים למאס עבודת ה' וכמש"ה וישמן ישרון ויבעט ואמרו חז"ל עבירה גוררת עבירה. והנה רמז בכאן שאעפ"י שהבחירה ביד האדם עכ"ז יש בהם צד הכרח וגזירה. כי אחר שבחר לעצמו דרך היושר. הנה כל מעשיו ומצותיו מטים טבעו ומכריחים אותו על עבודת ה' כמאמר חז"ל מצוה גוררת מצוה. וההפך שאם בתחלת בחירתו בחר ברע. הנה עונותיו יטו הכחות והפקידים שבו להנאות הבהמיות עד שישוב בהם הרגל וטבע שני למשוך העון בחבלי שוא וכאלו הוא מוכרח עליהם:

i.e. since you are coming to defile yourself, behold, all the powers and servants of your body will become habituated to lust for the lusts. And all your deeds will entice you to continue in the joy and gladness [in the lusts] they are used to. Day by day, they will lure you into sin, until your nature and body will tend towards and become ingrained to be disgusted by the service of G-d, and as the verse wrote: "Yeshurun became fat and kicked" (Deut. 32:15). And the sages said (Pirkei Avot 4:2): "sin brings more sin." Behold, he hinted here, that even though the free will is in a man's hands, nevertheless, there is an aspect of necessity and fate. For after, he chose for himself the path of righteousness, behold, all his actions and good deeds will pull his nature and force him towards the service of G-d, as the sages said "mitzvah brings more mitzvah". And the opposite, if in the beginning of his choice, he chose evil, behold, his sins will tend the powers and faculties in him toward animalistic pleasures, until they become habit and ingrained in him as second nature, and draw him by force towards more sin, as if he is forced into them.

**והוא יגמלך על מה שהשקיף עליו ממך**גם בזה בא להקל קושית ההכרח והצדק לומר שאעפ"י שהבחירה ביד האדם עכ"ז הכל תלוי בחפץ הש"י שלא יעות משפט וגומל לאיש כמפעלו וכמ"ש למעלה. ומה שאנו רואים צדיק ורע לו ודרך רשעים צלחה. אולי מה שבעינינו נדמה צדיק או רשע מפני שאין אנו יודעים הכוונה והנסתר שבהם. אבל הקב"ה הרואה ללבב אולי שהוא נהפך שהצדיק הנראה בעינינו יש עליו יותר עונות מן המדומה לנו לרשע:

**אמרים אמת לשלחיך**הקב"ה אשר שלח הנשמה שבך אל העולם השפל למען ענותה ולנסותה ולהטיבה באחריתה. והעולה ג"כ ממאמר השכל בזה הענין כלו הוא שאע"פ שעיקר ענין האדם הוא מצד ההכרח והגזירה לפי מה שנטע בו מן הכחות והמדות לפי מה שנוטים בטבע יצירתם אל המדות המשובחות או אל המגונות כפי חלוף טבעי בני אדם ומזגיהם. עכ"ז הרשות נתונה עפ"י השכל להמיר מדותיו רע בטוב וטוב ברע לעשות מן המדות המגונות משובחות וכן להיפך. וכמו שהוסיף לקח בפרק הבא ודעהו כי הוא כולו מחמדים וכולל כל אשר עיינו המחקרים הנאמנים בחקירות העמוקות בהיתר הספק של הכרח וצדק וידיעה ובחירה וכל המסתעף ממנו:

what also comes out of this entire discussion of the Understanding is that even though the existence of man is primarily out of necessity and divine decree, according to what G-d implanted in him of powers and dispositions and to whether they will tend towards the good traits or the bad traits due to each person's particular nature, nevertheless, each person has been granted the ability to choose through his understanding and he can transform his traits from bad to good or vice versa. He will continue this theme in the next chapter. Know it well. For it is all precious words, and it includes all that the great and faithful thinkers deeply inquired into of the matter of necessity and righteousness, and foreknowledge versus free will, and everything that follows from this.
