BARAITHA. Always be dignified on entering and leaving. Be submissive to the members of your household; engage but little in worldly affairs and occupy yourself with the study of the Torah. It is reported¹ of R. Simeon b. Eleazar that once, on returning from the house of his teacher in Migdal Gedor,² he was riding on an ass along the sea-shore when he met an ugly man. He said to him, ‘How ugly you are! May be all your fellow-citizens are as ugly as you are’. Whereupon the man replied, ‘Go [and tell this] to the Craftsman Who made me’. When R. Simeon realized that he had done wrong, he alighted from the ass and prostrated himself before him saying, ‘I beg your pardon, forgive me’. ‘By the Temple Service,’³ the man replied, ‘I will not forgive you until you go and tell the Craftsman Who made me, “How ugly is the vessel which You have made!” ’ R. Simeon followed him for three *mil;* his fellow-townsmen met him, having gone out to meet him, and exclaimed, ‘Peace be upon you, master’. The man turned back to them and asked, ‘Who is he [whom you call] Rabbi?’ They replied, ‘He who is following behind you’. Whereupon he remarked, ‘If he is a Rabbi, may there be no more like him in Israel’. His disciples by whom he was beloved rebuked the man and asked him, ‘What has he done to you?’ He replied, ‘Thus has he done to me’. They said to him, ‘Nevertheless forgive him’.
Be tender like the reed and do not be hard like the cedar. When the four winds of heaven blow, the reed bends with them, and when they subside, the reed remains standing in its place. Therefore the reed merited that of it the pen should be made wherewith to write the words of the Torah. Not so the cedar: when the south [or] north wind blows, it overturns and uproots it. And what is the end of the cedar? Woodcutters come and shape it and tile houses with it, and its cuttings they burn in the fire.

**The Minor Tractates of the Talmud, trans. A. Cohen, London: Soncino Press, 1965:**
In which way should one honour his teacher? When the two of them walk together in the road, he should place himself on [the teacher’s] right hand and not on his left. If there be three, the Sage should be in the middle, the older man on his right and the younger on his left. For so we find it with the three Ministering Angels, Gabriel, Michael and Raphael, who came to our father Abraham. Gabriel was in the middle, Michael on his right and Raphael on his left. When they came to Abraham, the Divine Presence also came and stood above his head. He said to them, ‘Sirs, wait until I have taken leave of the Divine Presence, Who is greater than you’, as it is stated, *And He left off talking with him, and God went up from Abraham*.⁴ As soon as Abraham had taken leave of the Divine Presence, he came and bowed to them, as it is stated, *And when he saw them, he ran to meet them … and bowed down to the earth*.⁵ XVIII, 2. He led them beneath the tree and said to them, ‘Sirs, *let now a little water be fetched, and wash your feet, and recline yourselves under the tree*’,⁶ 4. and then, *I will fetch a morsel of bread and stay ye your heart*.⁷ 5. But what did Lot say to them? *Tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your way*.⁸ XIX, 2. Others say: Lot surely spoke with the wisdom of the wise. If [the men of Sodom] see them with their face, hands and feet washed they would kill him and his children;⁹ but if they see the dust on their feet [they would conclude] that they had only just arrived from their journey.

It is related of the four elders, Rabban Gamaliel, R. Joshua, R. Eleazar b. Azariah and R. ‘Aḳiba, that they once journeyed to a kingdom in the interior where they had¹⁰ instead of *we’amar*. a friend who was a philosopher. R. Joshua said to Rabban Gamaliel, ‘I will go and pay my respects to our friend, the philosopher’. He replied, ‘No’. He again said, ‘I will go and pay my respects to our friend, the philosopher’. He replied, ‘Go in peace’. In the morning at cock-crow they went and stood at the door of the philosopher’s house. As Rabban Gamaliel was knocking at the door, the philosopher was thinking to himself and saying, ‘This¹¹ can only be the good manners of wise men’. He knocked a second time, and the philosopher rose up, washed his hands and feet. [Rabban Gamaliel knocked] a third time, and the philosopher saw the wise men of Israel had come some from one side and some from the other, with Rabban Gamaliel in the middle, R. Eleazar b. Azariah on his right and R. ‘Aḳiba on his left. The philosopher debated with himself, ‘How shall I greet the wise men of Israel? If I say, “Peace be upon you Rabban Gamaliel” I will offend the wise men of Israel. If I say, “Peace be upon you, O wise men of Israel” I will offend Rabban Gamaliel’. When he approached them he exclaimed, ‘Peace be upon you, headed by Rabban Gamaliel’. [This rule of good manners we learn] not from Rabban Gamaliel but from the Almighty; as it is stated, *I saw the Lord sitting on His throne, and all the host of heaven standing by Him on His right hand and on His left*.¹²
One who accompanies his teacher may not depart from him until he has withdrawn backwards a little and asked his permission. If they are two scholars of equal status, the host enters [the house] first and the guest after him. And when they leave, the guest goes out first and the host after him. One who takes leave of his teacher, whether he be his senior or not, should say, ‘I [ask permission] to take my leave’.

GEMARA. ‘Always be dignified’, etc. R. Samuel b. Naḥmani said:¹³ What is the meaning of the verse, *For the Lord will smite Israel, as a reed is shaken in the water?*¹⁴ Better is the curse wherewith Aḥijah the Shilonite cursed Israel than the blessing wherewith the wicked Balaam blessed them. Aḥijah the Shilonite cursed Israel with a *reed*, as it is written, *For the Lord will smite Israel as a reed is shaken in the water*. But Balaam blessed them with the *cedar*, as it is written, *As cedars beside the waters*.¹⁵ Therefore ‘be tender like the reed and do not be hard like the cedar … therefore the reed merited’, etc.
Why did dogs merit that of their excrement sacred books and *tefillin* should be made?¹⁶ is treated with the excrement of dogs. Because it stated, *But against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog whet his tongue*.¹⁷ Similarly you may ask, Wherein lay the merit of the *haḥiroth?*¹⁸ of Ex. 14, 2. It was a sanctuary connected with the Semitic deity Baal-Zephon, in whose worship licentious rites were practised. When the women beheld the Israelites, they abandoned their rites and as a reward the place was named חִירׂת read as חֵרוּת, ‘freedom’. Cf. Tanḥuma, *Balaḳ*, §17, Ginzberg, *Legends of the Jews*, III, pp. 10f. They were harlots and when they caught sight of Israel they turned their faces backward and are therefore called *ḥeruth*.

‘In which way should one honour his teacher’, etc.? It has been taught:¹⁹ Michael came to bring good tidings to Sarah,²⁰ Gabriel to overthrow Sodom, and Raphael to heal Abraham.²¹ Some say that Raphael came to bring good tidings to Sarah and to heal,²² as it is stated, *And God healed Abimelech*,²³ Michael and Gabriel to overthrow Sodom. What is the reason for the first view? [Because it is stated,] *And He overthrew those cities*.²⁴ XIX, 25, where the verb is singular. And what is the reason for the opinion of the others? [Because it is stated,] *And the two angels came to Sodom*.²⁵ 1. Why is it that with Abraham [the angels said], *So do, as thou hast said*,²⁶ XVIII, 5. but with Lot, *Nay; but we will abide in the broad place all night?*²⁷ XIX, 2. R. Eleazar said: Infer from this that one may display reluctance²⁸ towards an inferior but not a superior. The Rabbis taught:²⁹ of whom Micah 5, 4. speaks. In the time to come the son of David will be in the middle, Adam, Seth and Methuselah on his right, and Abraham, Jacob and Moses on his left. Why is Isaac omitted? Raba said: Isaac is better than they because to him all Israel declare, *For thou art our Father*.³⁰ If so, Esau ascended into Paradise.³¹ That is why Scripture states, *For thou art our Father:* children are like their father—as the father did not repudiate the covenant so too the children. And whence do we know this? It is stated, *I will prepare thee unto blood, and blood shall pursue thee; surely thou hast hated thine own blood, therefore blood shall pursue thee*.³² Did Esau hate blood? Were not all his deeds connected with the shedding of blood, as it is stated, *He is like a lion that is eager to tear in pieces, and like a young lion lurking in secret places?*³³ is *dimyono* in the Heb. and is spelt without the *waw*. Whence do you infer this? Perhaps he was only out to rob? No, since it states *dimyeno* and not *dimyono;*³⁴, ‘blood’. so draw this conclusion.
