רִבִּי חִיָּיא וְרִבִּי יוֹסֵי הֲווֹ אָזְלֵי בְּאָרְחָא, אַעְרָעוּ בְּהַהִיא מְעַרְתָּא בְּחַקְלָא. אָמַר רִבִּי חִיָּיא לְרִבִּי יוֹסֵי, הַאי דִּכְתִּיב, (דברים כ״ח:ס״ט) אֵלֶּה דִּבְרֵי הַבְּרִית וְגוֹ', מִלְּבַד הַבְּרִית. מַאי דִּבְרֵי הַבְּרִית. דִּבְרֵי גְּבוּרָה (ס"א האלה) מִבָּעֵי לֵיהּ. אָמַר לֵיהּ הָא אוּקְמוּהָ, הַלָּלוּ מִפִּי הַגְּבוּרָה, וְהַלָּלוּ מִפִּי עַצְמוֹ שֶׁל מֹשֶׁה, וְהָא אִתְּמַר.

As R. Hiya and R. Jose were journeying together, they came to a cave in a field and R. Hiya asked R. Jose: ‘Why is it written “These are the words of the covenant which the Lord commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel, besides the covenant which he made with them in Horeb” (Deut. 28, 69)? It should be: These are the words of the *adjuration*, should it not?’

תָּא חֲזֵי, אִלֵּין וְאִלֵּין דִּבְרֵי הַבְּרִית הֲווֹ, דְּאַף עַל גַּב דְּמִפִּי הַגְּבוּרָה הֲווֹ מִלִּין. מִלֵי בְּרִית הֲווֹ, דְּהָא טַב וּבִישׁ בֵּיהּ תַּלְיָין. טַב דְּאָתֵי מִצַדִּיק. בִּישׁ דְּאָתֵי מִן דִּינָא. דִּינָא, מֵאֲתַר דְּדִינָא, וְהַיְינוּ צֶדֶק. וְצַדִּיק וְצֶדֶק בְּרִית אִינּוּן, בְּרִית אִקְרוּן. וְעַל דָּא, מִלִּין אִלֵּין, מִלֵי בְּרִית אִינּוּן. וְקָשִׁיר בְּרִית כַּחֲדָא. וּבְגִּינֵי כַּךְ זָכוֹר וְשָׁמוֹר, קָשִׁיר כַּחֲדָא. זָכוֹר בְּיוֹם, שָׁמוֹר בַּלַּיְלָה. הָא בְּרִית כַּחֲדָא, וּבְגִין כַּךְ בְּרִית וַדַּאי, דִּבְרֵי הַבְּרִית נִינְהוּ. וּבְכָל אֲתַר בְּרִית בַּאֲתַר דָּא אִיהוּ.

**The Zohar; London, Soncino Press, 1933:**
He replied: ‘Both were words of a covenant, for although the later ones were not from the mouth of God (but of Moses), yet they were words of a covenant, since both good and evil are foreshadowed in them, good from the side of *Zaddik* and evil from the side of judgement, which is *Zedek*, and *Zaddik* and *Zedek* are called “Covenant”. Hence these words are words of a covenant.’

אָמַר רִבִּי חִיָּיא, וַדַּאי הָכִי הוּא, וּבְגִין כָּךְ שַׁבָּת דְּאִיהוּ זָכוֹר וְשָׁמוֹר, אִקְרֵי בְּרִית. דִּכְתִּיב, (שמות ל״א:ט״ז) וְשָׁמְרוּ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶת הַשַּׁבָּת לַעֲשׂוֹת אֶת הַשַּׁבָּת לְדֹרֹתָם בְּרִית עוֹלָם. וְכֹלָּא מִלָּה חַד, וַאֲתַר דָּא, אִקְרֵי בְּרִית בְּכָל אֲתַר.

תָּא חֲזֵי, כְּתִיב וְנָתַתִּי שָׁלוֹם בָּאָרֶץ, הוּא יְסוֹד, דְּאִיהוּ שְׁלָמָא דְּאַרְעָא, שְׁלָמָא דְּבֵיתָא, שְׁלָמָא דְּעָלְמָא. וְיִסַּרְתִּי אֶתְכֶם אַף אָנִי שֶׁבַע. מַאי ז'. דָּא צֶדֶק. הָא וַדַּאי בְּרִית, וּבְגִין כָּךְ דִּבְרֵי הַבְּרִית נִינְהוּ.
