זִיקָא מֵאַרְבַּע זִיקִין, בְּד' מָדוֹרִין, וּבְד' סִטְרִין, בְּזִיוָון דְּאִתְבְּרוּן בְּקוֹלְמִיטִין דְּאַנְפִּין נְהִירִין. בְּגִין כַּךְ כְּעֵין (נאש"ר) כְּמַרְאֵה הַחַיּוֹת, דְּאִינּוּן אַרְבַע זִוְיָין, דְּגָלִין פְּרִישָׂן, אַרְיֵ"ה. נֶשֶׁ"ר. שׁוֹ"ר. אָדָ"ם. דְּכָלִיל כֻּלְּהוּ ד' מַלְאֲכִין דְּשַׁלְטִין וּכְלִילָן כֹּלָּא.

and so were the movements of the tribes below who bore on their standards the likenesses of the *Hayoth*, that of Lion, Eagle, Ox, Man. Angels attended each of the standards.

The first standard bore the likeness of Lion and was attended by Michael, who had under him two chieftains, Zophiel and Zadkiel.

כַּד אִלֵּין נַטְלִין, נַטְלִין כַּמָה מַשִּׁרְיָין מְזַיְּינִין, מִסִּטְרָא דִּימִינָא, וְכֹלָּא חַד. לְסִטְרָא שְׂמָאלָא, שִׁמְשָׁא אָזִיל (ס"א נטל כד חד לסטר שמשא, שמשא אזיל) וְנָהִיר, וּמְעַטֵּר לְהוּ. אֶלֶף וְרִבְוָון מְמָנָן תְּחוֹתוֹי. וְכֻלְּהוּ בִּדְחִילוּ בְּאֵימָתָא בְּזִיעַ בְּרֶתֶת.

When these set out numerous armed hosts moved in unison on the right-hand side whilst the sun on the left illumined them.

אַרְיֵה אוֹשִׁיט יְדֵיהּ יְמִינָא, כָּנִישׁ לְכָל חֵילוֹי לְגַבֵּיהּ, תְּלַת מְאָה וְשִׁבְעִין אֶלֶף אַרְיְוָותָא, סוֹחֲרָנֵיהּ דְּהַהוּא אַרְיֵ"ה, וְאִיהוּ בֵּינַיְיהוּ בְּאֶמְצָעִיתָא.

The Lion put forth his right hand and summoned to himself all his hosts, to wit, three hundred and seventy thousand lions, and they all assembled round him.

כַּד גָּעֵי הַאי אַרְיֵה, מִזְדַעְזְעָן רְקִיעִין, וְכָל חַיָּלִין וּמַשִׁרְיָין מִזְדַעְזְעִין, מִדְּחִילוּ דִּילֵיהּ. מֵהַהוּא קָלָא, נְהַר דִּי נוּר מִתְלַהֲטָא, וְנָחִית בְּאֶלֶף וַחֲמֵשׁ מְאָה דַּרְגִּין דְּגֵיהִנָּם לְתַתָּא, כְּדֵין כֻּלְּהוּ חַיָּיבִין דְּגֵיהִנָּם מִזְדַעְזְעָן, וּמְלַהֲטָן אֶשָּׁא, וְעַל דָּא כְּתִיב, (עמוס ג׳:ח׳) אַרְיֵה שָׁאָג מִי לֹא יִירָא.

When this Lion roars all the firmaments and all their hosts and legions quiver and shake. The Fiery River blazes forth and sinks a thousand and five hundred stages to the lower Gehinnom. Then all the sinners in the Gehinnom shake and tremble and burn in the fire. So Scripture says: “The lion hath roared, who will not fear?” (Amos 3, 8).

גָּעֵי תִּנְיָינוּת, תְּלַת מְאָה וְשִׁבְעִין אֶלֶף אַרְיְוָותָא, כֻּלְּהוּ גָּעָאן. אוֹשִׁיט יְדֵיהּ שְׂמָאלָא, כָּל מָארֵיהוֹן דְּדִינָא לְתַתָּא דַּחֲלִין, וְאִתְכַּפְיָין תְּחוֹת הַהוּא יְדָא. וְהַהוּא יְדָא פָּשִׁיט עָלַיְיהוּ, וְכֻלְּהוּ תְּחוֹתֵיהּ. כְּמָה דְאַתְּ אָמֵר, (בראשית מ״ט:ח׳) יָדְךָ בְּעוֹרֶף אוֹיְבֶיךָ.

A second roar he emits, which is taken up by his entourage of three hundred and seventy thousand lions. Then he puts forth his left hand, when all the “masters of Rigour” here below are seized with fear and are bowed down underneath that hand. So we read: “Thy hand shall be on the neck of thy enemies” (Gen. 49, 8).

אַרְבַּע גַּדְפִּין לְכָל חַד וְחַד, מֵאֶשָּׁא חִוָּורָא. כֻּלְּהוּ מְלַהֲטִין. כָּל אַפִּין דְּחִזּוּר וְשׁוּשָן בְּחִוַורְתָּא דְּהַהוּא אֶשָּׁא שְּׁקִיעָן.

as well as four faces turned towards the four cardinal points, all illumined by the white light of the sun; the one turned to the east was illumined with a joyous light, the one towards the west with a concentrated light, the one towards the north was within the penumbra of the sun.

וְכֻלְּהוּ מִימִינָא וּמִשְּׂמָאלָא בִּתְלַת רֵישִׁין. רֵישָׁא חֲדָא דִּילֵיהּ, שִׁבְעִין וְאַרְבַּע אֶלֶף, וְשִׁית מְאָה. אִלֵּין אִינּוּן רֵישָׁא חַד. נָפְקֵי חֵילָא בִּימִינָא, דְּאִיהוּ אָרִים עָלַיְיהוּ. בַּר כָּל אִינּוּן מְמָנָן דִּלְתַּתָּא, תְּחוֹת אִלֵּין. שִׁלְטוֹנִין אִלֵּין עַל אִלֵּין, דַּרְגִּין תַּתָּאִין עִם עִלָּאִין, דְּלֵית לוֹן חוּשְׁבָּנָא.

These contained three groups.¹ One numbered seventy-four thousand and six hundred. These were of the higher grades. There were, besides, a long succession of lower grades. These were innumerable.

רֵישָׁא תִּנְיָינָא, דְּאָזִיל בְּרֵישָׁא קַדְמָאָה, חוּשְׁבָּן דִּילֵיהּ חַמְשִׁין וְאַרְבַּע אֶלֶף, וְאַרְבַּע מְאָה. בַּר כָּל אִלֵּין מְמָנָן דִּתְחוֹת לְד' סִטְרִין, דְּלֵית לוֹן חוּשְׁבָּנָא. רֵישָׁא תְּלִיתָאָה, דְּאָזִיל בַּתְרַיְיהוּ, חַמְשִׁין וְשִׁבְעָה אֶלֶף, וְאַרְבַּע מְאָה. כְּגַוְונָא דְּנָטִיל יְמִינָא, הָכִי נָמֵי נָטִיל שְׂמָאלָא, הָכִי נָמֵי מִקַּמַּיְיהוּ, הָכִי נָמֵי מִבַּתְרַיְיהוּ.

The second group contained fifty-four thousand and four hundred besides those of the lower grades, who were innumerable. The third group, which followed behind, contained fifty-seven thousand and four hundred.

כֵּיוָן דְּנָטִיל הַאי קַדְמָאָה, וְהוּרַד הַמִּשְׁכָּן. וְכֻלְּהוּ לֵיוָואֵי אַמְרֵי שִׁירָתָא, מָארֵי דְּתוּשְׁבְּחָן כֻּלְּהוּ מִסִּטְרֵיהּ. כְּדֵין (יחזקאל א׳:כ״א) כִּי רוּחַ הַחַיָּה בָּאוֹפַנִּים כְּתִיב.

So soon as the first standard began to march *the tabernacle was taken down*, and all the Levites chanted hymns, and the lords of praise were all ranged there “for the spirit of the *Hayoth* was in the *Ophanim* (Wheels)”.
