תָּא חֲזֵי, דָּרָא בַּתְרָאָה דְּנַפְקוּ מִמִּצְרַיִם, יָדְעוּ כֹּלָּא, דְּהָא מֹשֶׁה גַּלֵּי לוֹן כָּל אִינּוּן מ' שְׁנִין דַּהֲווֹ בְּמַדְבְּרָא, כְּמָה דַּאֲמֵינָא. תָּאנָא אָמַר רִבִּי יִצְחָק, וְאַף מֹשֶׁה לָא גַּלֵּי דָּא, אֶלָּא בְּהַהוּא יוֹמָא דְּהֲוָה סָלִיק מִן עָלְמָא, דִּכְתִּיב, (דברים ל״א:ב׳) בֶּן מֵאָה וְעֶשְׂרִים שָׁנָה אָנֹכִי הַיּוֹם, בְּהַהוּא יוֹמָא מַמָּשׁ, וְעִם כָּל דָּא לָא אָמַר, עַד דְּיָהֲבוּ לֵיהּ רְשׁוּתָא. דִּכְתִּיב, (שם) וְעַתָּה כִּתְבוּ לָכֶם אֶת הַשִּׁירָה הַזֹּאת. וְכַד גַּלֵּי, לָא אָמַר הַאֲזִינוּ יִשְׂרָאֵל, אֶלָּא הַאֲזִינוּ הַשָּׁמַיִם.

אָמַר רִבִּי יוֹסֵי, כְּתִיב אֶת הַשִּׁירָה, וְכִי שִׁירָה אִקְרֵי. אָמַר רִבִּי יִצְחָק שִׁירָה וַדַּאי, מַה שִׁירָה אִתְמַשְּׁכָא בְּרוּחַ הַקֹּדֶשׁ מֵעֵילָּא לְתַתָּא, אוּף הָכִי מִלִּין אִלֵּין אִתְמַשְּׁכָן בְּרוּחַ הַקֹּדֶשׁ מֵעֵילָּא לְתַתָּא, וּבְגִין כָּךְ אָמַר מֹשֶׁה שִׁירָה.

R. Jose asked: ‘Why is this discourse called “song”?’ R. Isaac answered: ‘Just as a song is drawn from heaven to earth by the holy spirit, so these words were drawn from heaven to earth by the holy spirit.

תָּא חֲזֵי, כּוּלֵי הַאי אָמַר מֹשֶׁה, וְקָרָא לְעִלָּאִין, עַד לָא יֵימָּא מִלָּה, דִּכְתִּיב הַאֲזִינוּ הַשָּׁמַיִם. יַעֲרוֹף כַּמָּטָר וְגוֹ'. וְכָל כַּךְ לָמָּה. מִשּׁוּם כִּי שֵׁם יְיָ' אֶקְרָא. עַד דְּיֵימָּא מִלָּה, אַרְעִישׁ כֻּלְּהוּ עָלְמִין.

Observe that Moses made a long exordium saying, “Give ear, ye heavens, and hear, O earth, let my discourse drop as the dew”, etc. Why all this? “Because I will call on the name of the Lord”.

תָּאנָא בְּהַהִיא שַׁעֲתָא דְּאָמַר מֹשֶׁה הַאֲזִינוּ הַשָּׁמַיִם וַאֲדַבֵּרָה, אִתְרְגִּישׁוּ עָלְמִין. נָפַק קָלָא וְאָמַר, מֹשֶׁה מֹשֶׁה, אֲמַאי אַתְּ מַרְעִישׁ עָלְמָא כֹּלָּא. אַתְּ בְּרֵיהּ דְּבַר נָשׁ, וּבְגִינָךְ אִתְרְגִּישׁ עָלְמָא. פָּתַח וְאָמַר, כִּי שֵׁם יְיָ' אֶקְרָא. בְּהַהִיא שַׁעֲתָא אִשְׁתָּתָקוּ, וַאֲצִיתוּ מִלּוֹי.

We have learnt that when Moses said “Give ear, ye heavens, and I will speak”, all worlds were shaken. A voice came forth and said: Moses, why dost thou shake the world, being but a mortal? He replied: Because I will call on the name of the Lord. Forthwith they were silent and listened to his words.’¹, v. Appendix.
