אָמַר רִבִּי יוֹסֵי, לָא אַגְלֵי קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא לְיִשְׂרָאֵל, אֶלָּא בְּזִמְנָא דְּלָא אִשְׁתַּכַּח מְהֵימְנוּתָא בֵּינַיְיהוּ. כַּד אִתְמְנַע מְהֵימְנוּתָא בֵּינַיְיהוּ, כִּבְיָכוֹל, הָכִי אִשְׁתַּכַּח בְּכֹלָּא. דִּכְתִיב, (ישעיהו כ״ח:י״ח) וְכִפֶּר בְּרִיתְכֶם אֶת מָוֶת.

אָמַר רִבִּי חִיָּיא, מַאי דִכְתִיב, (ישעיהו כ״ה:ח׳) בִּלַּע הַמָּוֶת לָנֶצַח. אָמַר לֵיהּ, כַּד יִתְעַר קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא יְמִינָא דִילֵיהּ, אִתְמְנַע מוֹתָא מִן עַלְמָא. וְלָא יִתְעַר הַאי יְמִינָא, אֶלָּא כַּד יִתְעָרוּן יִשְׂרָאֵל בִּימִינָא דְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא, וּמַאי נִיהוּ תּוֹרָה, דִּכְתִיב בָּהּ, (דברים ל״ג:כ״א) מִימִינוֹ אֵשׁ דָּת לָמוֹ. בְּהַהוּא זִמְנָא, (תהילים קי״ח:י״ז) יְמִין ה' עוֹשָׂה חָיִל וְגו', לא אָמוּת כִּי אֶחְיֶה וַאֲסַפֵּר מַעֲשֵׂי יָהּ.

R. Hiya said: ‘What is the meaning of the verse: “He hath swallowed up death for ever” (Is. 25, 8)?’ He said: ‘When God shall arouse His right hand, then death shall be banished from the world. But He will not arouse His right hand till Israel give the impetus, to wit, by the Torah. At that time “the right hand of the Lord doeth valiantly” (Ps. 118, 16), and “I shall not die but live” (*Ibid.* 17).
