## Malbim on Amos Chapter 3

###### Malbim on Amos 3:1:1
[Malbim on Amos 3:1:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Amos/r/3:1:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Hear,** etc., **whom I brought up from the land of Egypt,** and thereby I acquired you as My portion, so that you would not be under the heavenly princes and the celestial order, for My Providence is attached to you, and therefore:

###### Malbim on Amos 3:2:1
[Malbim on Amos 3:2:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Amos/r/3:2:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**You alone have I known from all the families of the earth.** There is no other family on earth to whom My knowledge and Providence are attached as they are to you, for all the others are subject to the order of nature and the governance of the heavenly host, and therefore they are not commanded against associating other powers with God, as it is written, "which Hashem has apportioned to all the peoples under the heavens," and, "But you Hashem took and brought out of the iron furnace, from Egypt, to be His people, an inheritance." Therefore, **I will visit upon you all your iniquities,** since you are commanded concerning the unity of God and not to associate the worship of a foreign power with My worship, and to you were given the Torah and the commandments.

###### Malbim on Amos 3:3:1

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Will two walk together?** Verses 3–8 are an announcement and introduction, containing the main points of the prophecies that follow from verse 9 until the end of chapter 4. He says, as a first introduction, that they should know that their punishment is not a matter of chance, but of Divine Providence, for **"Will two walk together unless they have agreed to meet?"** Two different people who walk together on the same journey toward a single destination have certainly been brought together for that purpose, and it is not by chance. This serves as an introduction to what he will say in verses 9, 10, and 11: since several different nations joined together to wage war against Israel, this was not by chance; rather, Hashem appointed and summoned them for this purpose, and His spirit gathered them together.

###### Malbim on Amos 3:4:1
[Malbim on Amos 3:4:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Amos/r/3:4:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Will a lion roar?** As a second introduction, when a lion roars in the forest, it certainly has prey and does not roar for nothing. This serves as an introduction to what he will say in verse 12: the king of Assyria, who roars against them, will seize his prey, devour men, and no one will deliver them from his hand. It is already explained in accounts of natural history that when a lion is young, while it is in the stage called a *kefir*, it does not go out in search of its prey, but sits in its lair in ambush to devour animals that pass by it. Therefore, it says, **"Does a young lion give forth its voice from its den?"** But when it grows old and is called an *aryeh*, it goes far from its den to seize prey. Therefore, it says, **"Will a lion roar in the forest?"** The metaphor is that both when Assyria roared against them in their own land, and when it captured one of them in its own den—when Hoshea son of Elah went out to him and he imprisoned him, so that he was caught by him as one is caught by a young lion, for he had then entered the territory of Assyria—in both cases, there was no one who could deliver from his hand.

###### Malbim on Amos 3:5:1
[Malbim on Amos 3:5:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Amos/r/3:5:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Will a bird fall?** As a third introduction, when a bird flying high above falls into a trap resting upon the ground, is it possible that there is no snare for it? For within the trap there is a snare by which the bird is caught. Likewise, **"Will a trap spring up from the ground without having caught anything?"** When we see the trap spring up, it has certainly caught something. This serves as an introduction to what he will say from verse 13 onward: Israel's being caught in the hand of the king of Assyria had a cause, which served as a snare for them, as will be explained there.

###### Malbim on Amos 3:6:1
[Malbim on Amos 3:6:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Amos/r/3:6:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Will a shofar be sounded?** As a fourth introduction, if a shofar is sounded in a city, the shofar being a sign that the sword is coming upon the land or that other troubles are approaching, is it possible that the people will not tremble? Surely they will tremble and fear the coming calamity and seek means by which to escape it. This serves as an introduction to what he will say in chapter 4, from verse 4 until the end of the passage: Hashem sounded the shofar through His prophets to warn them of the troubles that were about to come upon them—famine, locusts, pestilence, and the sword—yet they did not tremble and did not return to Hashem, through which they could have escaped the calamity. Instead, they attributed all the evils to chance. To this he responds, **"Can there be calamity in a city that Hashem has not caused?"** And since all calamities issue from the decree of Hashem, why did the people not return to Him who struck them?

###### Malbim on Amos 3:7:1
[Malbim on Amos 3:7:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Amos/r/3:7:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**For.** That is, do not say that the reason they did not repent was because the decree had already been issued and they thought that their repentance would be of no avail. To this he responds that although Hashem speaks a word and issues a decree, **Hashem will not carry out the evil** and immediately bring it into effect **unless He has revealed His secret to His servants the prophets,** and He sends them to warn the people so that they will repent of their deeds and annul the decree, so that it will not come to pass. And the prophet will certainly fulfill his mission and go to warn the people. For:

###### Malbim on Amos 3:8:1
[Malbim on Amos 3:8:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Amos/r/3:8:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**A lion.** Even **if a lion has roared, who will not fear?** although its roar is merely the roar of an animal; how much more so, if **Hashem God has spoken, who will not prophesy?** Surely the prophets will tremble, prophesy, and warn the people. Why, then, did they not repent? Accordingly, he also said metaphorically that if a shofar is sounded in a city and the people do not tremble or fear at the sound of the shofar so as to take heed, repent, and prevent the calamity, then **if** afterward **there is calamity in the city** and the decree comes upon them, **Hashem has not caused it;** the matter should not be attributed to Hashem, for they themselves brought the calamity upon themselves. For Hashem does not do anything without first revealing His secret to the prophets and warning the people through them; and when they do not heed the warning, the deed is not attributed to Him, but rather to the people themselves, who brought the calamity upon themselves.

###### Malbim on Amos 3:9:1
[Malbim on Amos 3:9:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Amos/r/3:9:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Proclaim.** He begins to explain the first introduction, in which he said, "Will two walk together unless they have agreed to meet?" Behold, **they shall proclaim** and announce **in Ashdod,** which is among the Philistines, **upon the palaces** (for one who made a public proclamation would customarily stand upon a high palace and proclaim); likewise, **they shall proclaim in the land of Egypt upon the palaces,** for in the land of Egypt as well such a proclamation will be made. **And say:** the proclaimers shall proclaim and tell the peoples **to assemble** to go to war **upon the mountains of Samaria. And see:** there you will see that they deserve destruction, because there are **great tumults within her,** in matters between man and God, and **oppressed people in her midst,** in matters between man and his fellow. And corresponding to what he said, **"for there are great tumults within her,"** he says:

###### Malbim on Amos 3:10:1
[Malbim on Amos 3:10:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Amos/r/3:10:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And they do not know how to act uprightly,** in matters between man and God; and corresponding to what he said, "and oppressed people are in her midst," he explains, **who store up violence and plunder in their palaces** (so that even Egypt and the Philistines will be astonished at their abominations, the opposite of what he said earlier, that He brought them out of the land of Egypt so that they would not learn the abominations of the Egyptians, and destroyed the Amorite before them so that they would not act according to the abominations of the seven nations, of whom the Philistines were among them; but now the opposite has occurred, for they have become more abominable than they). And you ask: Who brought together two separate nations to join in a single plan to go against the mountains of Samaria? **Will two walk together unless they have agreed to meet?** Surely Hashem appointed and summoned them for this purpose.

###### Malbim on Amos 3:11:1
[Malbim on Amos 3:11:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Amos/r/3:11:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Therefore, thus says Hashem.** Hashem appointed them, and He said, **"An enemy, and around the land,"** meaning that they will besiege the land all around, from every side, and therefore He sent different nations against them. **And he shall bring down**—the enemy **shall bring down your strength from you,** and as a result, **your palaces shall be plundered,** which were filled with robbery and violence. And do not ask why we do not find that the Philistines and Egyptians came against Samaria, for in the accounts of Kings and Chronicles not all the particular events that happened to them are recorded, but only the general events. And it is reasonable that after the Philistines spread through Judah in the days of Ahaz, at the time when the king of Assyria came against Pekah (as explained in II Chronicles 28), they afterward also entered the territory of Israel, which had been weakened by the king of Assyria, as stated in Ezekiel (16:27). Likewise, Egypt had a foothold at that time in the cities of Israel, as I explained in the prophecy of Hosea (7:11; 8:9; 9:6; 11:5).

###### Malbim on Amos 3:12:1
[Malbim on Amos 3:12:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Amos/r/3:12:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Thus says Hashem.** Now he explains the second introduction, in which he said, "Will a lion roar in the forest when it has no prey?" The lion roaring against them is the king of Assyria, who prepared to wage war against them, and he will seize his prey and destroy them. He explains: **"As the shepherd rescues from the mouth of the lion two legs,"** for it is impossible for the shepherd to rescue the sheep that the lion has torn apart; rather, he will attempt to rescue from its mouth two legs or a piece of the ear's cartilage (so that he will have evidence that the sheep was torn apart and will be exempt from paying, as it is written, "If it is indeed torn apart, he shall bring it as evidence," meaning that he shall bring part of the torn animal as proof), **"so shall the children of Israel who dwell in Samaria be rescued, in the corner of a bed,"** meaning that only the weak, who sit in the corner of a bed because of their weakness, will be spared from being killed or exiled. **"And in Damascus, on a couch"**—the meaning of the verse is: "and those who dwell **in Damascus, in the corner of a couch.**" Upon a couch lies one who is completely ill, not merely weak; there, even the weak who sit upon a bed will not be spared, but only the sick who lie upon a sickbed. For at first the king of Assyria exiled many Israelites to Damascus, since he exiled Aram to Kir and settled Israelites in their place in Damascus; or many Israelites settled there themselves, for Jeroboam son of Joash restored Damascus to Israel, as mentioned in Kings. Afterward, the king of Assyria exiled them from Damascus as well, as it is written below (5:27), "And I will exile you beyond Damascus," for afterward he transferred them from Damascus to Halah and Habor. From there he exiled even the weak who sat upon beds, and none escaped from his hand except those who lay upon a sickbed.

###### Malbim on Amos 3:13:1
[Malbim on Amos 3:13:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Amos/r/3:13:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Hear and testify.** Now he explains the third introduction, in which he said, "Will a bird fall into a trap when there is no snare for it?" Since they fell into the trap of the king of Assyria, there must necessarily have been a snare—that is, a cause through which they were ensnared and caught in the trap. He already explained this matter of their falling into the trap in Hosea (chapter 7): "Ephraim was like a foolish dove; they called to Egypt, they went to Assyria. When they go, I will spread My net over them; I will bring them down like the birds of the heavens." I explained there that Hoshea son of Elah was caught in the trap of the king of Assyria when he went to him after having sent messengers to summon the king of Egypt for aid against the kings of Assyria. In this he was compared to a bird of the heavens descending into the net; likewise, he afterward went down to the king of Assyria and was caught in his power. And there I explained that the snare of this trap was set for him by his own people, for because Hoshea wished to abolish the worship of the calves, there was opposition to him in Israel, and they informed against him and revealed to the king of Assyria that he wished to rebel against him and seek refuge under the protection of Egypt (as explained there in chapter 10 (2–6), according to my explanation there). However, the primary snare was the sin of the worship of the calves that was in their hands, and for this very sin they were punished. This is the meaning of **"Hear and testify against the house of Jacob."**

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**For on the day that I visit the transgressions of Israel,** to punish them for their iniquities, then **I will visit the altars of Beth-el, and the horns of the altar shall be cut off.** This refers to Hoshea's cutting off the horns of the altar so that they would no longer sprinkle the blood of their sacrifices upon the horns of the altar. Thus, the snare of the sin of idolatry caused another snare: because Hoshea cut off the horns of the altar, a rebellion arose against him among the people, and thereby:

###### Malbim on Amos 3:15:1
[Malbim on Amos 3:15:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Amos/r/3:15:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And I will strike the winter house.** The rebels destroyed the king's house, both his winter house and his summer house, and **the houses of ivory shall perish,** which belonged to the king and the princes, and thereby **many houses shall come to an end,** whether through the turmoil among themselves, in which they destroyed many houses, as it is also written (Isaiah 9:20), "And the people shall be as fuel for the fire, etc.; Manasseh against Ephraim, and Ephraim against Manasseh," or because, as a result of this, they informed against their king to the king of Assyria, who imprisoned him when he went out to him. This was the snare that led to the trap, for through this snare he fell into his net, and as a result the king of Assyria afterward came up, besieged Samaria, captured it, and exiled Israel. Thus, the sin of idolatry that was in their hands was the primary snare by which the bird—Ephraim and the tribes of Israel—was caught.
