## Malbim on Ezra Chapter 3

###### Malbim on Ezra 3:1:1

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**“And the month arrived”**—This means “the month came.” It is expressed in the simple conjugation to indicate that when the month had barely arrived, they had already assembled, for they had come several days beforehand in order to be there for Rosh Hashanah and the festivals that followed it.

###### Malbim on Ezra 3:2:1

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**“And they built it in order to offer burnt offerings upon it”**—Apparently, Scripture is precise in indicating that they offered only burnt offerings and no other sacrifices, as is also evident from the verses [3–6]. This supports the opinion of Raavad in chapter 6 of the Laws of the Temple, that the Temple’s sanctity ceased at the time of its destruction, as well as the opinion of Rabbi Shimon in chapter 14 of Zevahim that, even at a public altar, the community was permitted to offer only the Passover offerings and obligatory offerings whose times were fixed and whose type could also be brought as an individual voluntary offering—that is, the daily offerings and the burnt offerings sacrificed on the festival, since an individual may also voluntarily offer a burnt offering. Sin offerings and guilt offerings, however—such as the festival goats—were not offered upon a great public altar. Likewise, on Yom Kippur they offered neither the goats nor the bulls, as Tosafot explain. Individual obligatory offerings were certainly not offered, nor were meal offerings, since meal offerings were not permitted upon an altar outside the Temple. The verses can therefore be understood literally: they offered burnt offerings alone.

###### Malbim on Ezra 3:3:1

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**The questions:**
**(3–6) What does the reason given—“for fear was upon them because of the peoples of the lands”—explain? Why does Scripture repeatedly state that they offered burnt offerings, implying that they did not offer the additional sin offerings required on Rosh Chodesh and the festivals, and why did they not offer them?**

###### Malbim on Ezra 3:3:2
[Malbim on Ezra 3:3:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Ezra/r/3:3:2)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**“And they set the altar upon its foundations”**—As our Sages said, three prophets came up with them from the exile, one of whom testified concerning the location of the altar. The statement **“for fear was upon them because of the peoples of the lands”** explains why they waited until the entire people had assembled. They had not built the altar before then because they feared that the peoples of the lands would stop them while they were still few in number.

###### Malbim on Ezra 3:4:1
[Malbim on Ezra 3:4:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Ezra/r/3:4:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**“And the daily burnt offerings in their prescribed number”**—fourteen lambs each day; **“according to the ordinance required for each day”**—the bulls of the festival, whose number decreased from day to day.

###### Malbim on Ezra 3:5:1
[Malbim on Ezra 3:5:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Ezra/r/3:5:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
For Ezra was delayed on the journey for four months, and they had to wait for the messenger to travel there and return. It is also evident that they did not offer the lambs of Shavuot. Although voluntary peace offerings could be brought, they were not comparable: the Shavuot lambs were offerings of the most sacred order, whereas ordinary peace offerings were offerings of lesser sanctity, as Tosafot explain. According to the opinion that sacrifices may be offered even when the Temple is not standing, however, one must interpret the word “burnt offerings” as not being exclusive.

###### Malbim on Ezra 3:7:1
[Malbim on Ezra 3:7:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Ezra/r/3:7:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**The question:**
**(7) Why does Scripture say, “in accordance with the authorization granted to them by Cyrus,” which appears to be superfluous?**

###### Malbim on Ezra 3:7:2
[Malbim on Ezra 3:7:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Ezra/r/3:7:2)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**“In accordance with the authorization of Cyrus”**—The cedars of Lebanon belonged to the king, and they could not take timber from there without the king’s permission, as is evident in Nehemiah [2:8]. They sent people to bring timber from there, not to purchase it with money, because Cyrus’s written decree stated, “Let the expenses be paid from the royal treasury,” as explained below [Ezra 6:4]. Since he had ordered that the cost of construction be borne at his expense, they were permitted to take the timber in accordance with the authorization that Cyrus had granted them.

###### Malbim on Ezra 3:8:1
[Malbim on Ezra 3:8:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Ezra/r/3:8:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**The questions:**
**(8–9) Why does Scripture say twice, “to supervise”—first, “to supervise the work of the House of Hashem,” and then, “to supervise those performing the work”? At first, it appears that all the Levites were appointed over this task.**

###### Malbim on Ezra 3:8:2
[Malbim on Ezra 3:8:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Ezra/r/3:8:2)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**“Who had come from captivity to Jerusalem, to supervise”**—that is, to sing at the time the foundation was laid, as stated in verse 10.

###### Malbim on Ezra 3:9:1
[Malbim on Ezra 3:9:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Ezra/r/3:9:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**“The descendants of Judah”**—This is stated to distinguish him from another Kadmiel among the descendants of Henadad, as mentioned in Nehemiah 10:10. **“To supervise”**—here it means to oversee those performing the work, whereas all the Levites participated in directing the song, as stated in the preceding verse.

###### Malbim on Ezra 3:10:1
[Malbim on Ezra 3:10:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Ezra/r/3:10:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**“Clothed”**—in garments of honor; thus Rashi explains it. This accords with the opinion of Maimonides in chapter 8 of the Laws of the Temple Vessels, that priests were not permitted to wear the priestly garments except while performing the service. According to Raavad’s view there, however, it may be explained that they were clothed in the priestly garments. Even according to Maimonides, it may be said that they wore the priestly garments for the service of the daily offering and for turning one of its limbs with a hook; they were then permitted to continue wearing them throughout the day, as I wrote in my work Artzot HaChaim [section 18]. The priests ordinarily sounded the trumpets only on the festivals, as Maimonides states [Laws of the Temple Vessels, chapter 3]. On this occasion, however, it was a temporary ruling, for they regarded the day as a festival because of their great joy. **“According to the direction of David”**—with the songs and praises composed by David.

###### Malbim on Ezra 3:11:1
[Malbim on Ezra 3:11:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Ezra/r/3:11:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**“And they responded with praise and thanksgiving”**—Praise refers to extolling the Creator, whereas thanksgiving is offered for the good He has bestowed. Scripture explains that in their praise they proclaimed, **“For He is good,”** meaning that this praise is fitting because He is intrinsically good; and in their thanksgiving they proclaimed, **“For His kindness toward Israel endures forever.”** **“And the people raised a great shout in praise of Hashem”**—but not in thanksgiving, because many of them were weeping, as the following verse relates.

###### Malbim on Ezra 3:12:1
[Malbim on Ezra 3:12:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Ezra/r/3:12:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**The questions:**
**(12–13) Why does Scripture say that the sound of the joyful shouting could not be distinguished because the people were shouting so loudly? This appears self-contradictory.**

###### Malbim on Ezra 3:12:2
[Malbim on Ezra 3:12:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Ezra/r/3:12:2)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**“Who had seen”**—The word “seen” also applies to what follows, while the words “with their own eyes” also apply to what precedes. The meaning is: **Those who had seen the First Temple [with their own eyes], and now saw the foundation of this Temple with their own eyes, were weeping,** as it is written [Haggai 2], “Who among you remains who saw this House in its former glory, and how do you see it now?” **“But many shouted aloud”**—This may be explained according to Maimonides’ statement in chapter 1 of the Laws of Terumot regarding why the sanctity established by Joshua ceased, whereas the sanctity established by Ezra did not cease. Joshua’s sanctification was accomplished through conquest; therefore, when the Land was conquered by enemies, the conquest was nullified and its sanctity ceased. Ezra’s sanctification, however, was established through possession and consequently did not cease. Many wept because they saw that the people were building with Cyrus’s permission and in accordance with his decree, which restricted the dimensions and character of the building, as explained below [chapter 6]. Had they been worthy, a miracle would have occurred for them in Ezra’s days as it had in the days of Joshua son of Nun, as our Sages stated [Berakhot 4a]; over this they wept. Many others, however, rejoiced precisely because the new sanctification would thereby endure forever and never cease. This is the meaning of the verse:

###### Malbim on Ezra 3:13:1
[Malbim on Ezra 3:13:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Ezra/r/3:13:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**“And the people could not distinguish the sound of the joyful shouting”**—because of **the sound of the people’s weeping.** The very circumstance over which some wept—that they were building under Cyrus’s authority—was itself the reason many who understood its benefit rejoiced. The multitude did not understand this; they simply **raised a great shout.** This is the homiletical interpretation. According to the plain meaning, neither of the two sounds—the sound of joy or the sound of weeping—could be distinguished because of the blasts of the trumpets, which could be heard from afar and drowned out all the other sounds.
