## Malbim on Joel Chapter 4

###### Malbim on Joel 4:1:1
[Malbim on Joel 4:1:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joel/r/4:1:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**For behold:** He explains when the events just mentioned will occur: when it is My intention **to restore the captivity of Judah,** meaning at the End of Days. Although the Ten Tribes will also be redeemed then, the tribe of Judah is foremost in His eyes.

###### Malbim on Joel 4:2:1
[Malbim on Joel 4:2:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joel/r/4:2:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And I will gather all the nations:** At that time, Hashem will cause all the nations to assemble for the war of Gog and Magog prophesied by Ezekiel. It is explained there that the descendants of Edom will first rise to wage war against the descendants of Ishmael, after which the descendants of Ishmael will fight against the descendants of Edom. This will be brought about by Hashem, **to bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat.** He thus calls the Valley of Gog’s Multitude, where they will fall among the slain, “the Valley of Jehoshaphat.” He explains why it is given this name: **“And I will enter into judgment with them there,”** for there I will bring them to judgment **concerning My people and My inheritance, Israel,** because of the evils they committed against them. Although Hashem decreed exile upon Israel, the nations assisted in inflicting evil and exceeded the proper measure in two ways. First, **“they scattered them among the nations”:** because of the many expulsions and persecutions, Israel found no rest even in the lands of its enemies and was dispersed to every corner of the earth. Second, the nations took possession of Israel as though the people belonged to them and were property purchased with their money. This was expressed in **“they divided My land,”** as though they had acquired the land as an inheritance because they regarded Israel as their servants, and whatever a servant acquires belongs to his master.

###### Malbim on Joel 4:3:1
[Malbim on Joel 4:3:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joel/r/4:3:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And for:** They also took possession of their very bodies as purchased property and **cast lots over them** to determine who would take each one as a male or female servant. Israel was held in such contempt that **they exchanged a boy for a prostitute:** if an Israelite family had a son and a daughter, they gave the boy as payment to a prostitute and sold the girl for wine.

###### Malbim on Joel 4:4:1
[Malbim on Joel 4:4:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joel/r/4:4:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Moreover:** The nations into whose hands I delivered Israel, such as Assyria and Babylon, merely exceeded the proper measure, while the underlying harm they inflicted was ordained by Hashem. **But what are you to Me, Tyre, Sidon, and all the regions of Philistia?** I never delivered Israel into your hands at all; who commanded you to harm them? **Are you repaying Me for something?** Did I do you some harm for which you are now repaying Me evil for evil? What wrong have I done to you? There is a distinction between “recompensing” evil and “repaying” evil. One who repays evil has suffered harm from another because of that person’s hostility and hatred, and therefore repays him in kind—evil for evil. Recompensing evil, however, can apply even when one has suffered no harm from the other but harms him merely because of one’s own hostility toward him. Therefore, he says, **“And if you are recompensing Me,”** meaning: since I did you no harm for which you might repay Me evil for evil, you are acting solely because of your hostility toward Israel, even though Israel did you no harm. **“Swiftly and speedily I will return your recompense upon your own heads.”** I will therefore not wait until the final era and the future Day of Judgment, as I will with the other nations, but will swiftly repay you even in the present age. Indeed, in the days of Alexander the Great, Tyre, Sidon, and Philistia were destroyed and reduced to everlasting heaps of desolation.

###### Malbim on Joel 4:5:1
[Malbim on Joel 4:5:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joel/r/4:5:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Because:** He explains the evils they committed against Israel. Apart from the fact that **“you took My silver and My gold”**—for I did not deliver Israel’s possessions into your hands as I delivered them to Nebuchadnezzar, but you seized them on your own initiative—you committed still further wickedness, for:

###### Malbim on Joel 4:6:1
[Malbim on Joel 4:6:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joel/r/4:6:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**You sold the children of Judah to the Greeks** at the time of the destruction, **in order to remove them far from their own territory.** This was worse than taking their silver for your own benefit or selling them as servants to profit from their price, for you sold them to a distant land out of sheer hostility and hatred. I will therefore return your recompense upon you in precisely the same manner in which you treated Israel—for this is the meaning of “returning”: bringing the very same thing back upon the one who did it.

###### Malbim on Joel 4:7:1
[Malbim on Joel 4:7:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joel/r/4:7:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Behold, I will rouse them from the place:** When the Greeks came and destroyed Tyre and Sidon, they brought their sons and daughters to Greece. There, the Jews who had been exiled to Greece purchased them from the Greeks and **sold them to the Sabeans, a distant nation,** thereby likewise removing them far from their own territory. Thus, they were punished through the very Jews whom they had sold and in precisely the same manner in which they had mistreated them.

###### Malbim on Joel 4:9:1
[Malbim on Joel 4:9:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joel/r/4:9:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Proclaim:** He now returns to the earlier subject, where he said that He would gather the nations in the Valley of Jehoshaphat. He commands that **this be proclaimed among the nations** by the decree of the heavenly Watchers and that they **prepare for war.** I have already explained in Ezekiel, chapters 32, 38, and 39, that in the future the nations of Edom will arise to conquer the land and will inflict great slaughter upon the Egyptians, who belong to the Ishmaelite faith. The Ishmaelites will then arise to avenge their brethren against the Edomites and will inflict great slaughter and destruction upon them. The Edomites will subsequently return to wage war against the descendants of Ishmael and will slaughter them. Thus, the war of Gog and Magog at the End of Days will occur in three stages. Concerning the first battle, he says, **“Rouse the mighty warriors; let all the men of war approach and advance.”** In this first battle, the mighty and those skilled in the tactics of warfare will be the combatants. In the second battle, there will no longer be mighty warriors or trained soldiers, for they will all have fallen among the slain. Then:

###### Malbim on Joel 4:10:1
[Malbim on Joel 4:10:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joel/r/4:10:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Beat your plowshares into swords:** Since all those who wielded swords will have fallen, the farmers and tillers of the soil will go in their place, fashioning new swords and spears from their plowshares and pruning hooks. They will not be mighty warriors; rather, **the weak will say, “I am mighty.”** In the third battle, after these too have perished in warfare, then:

###### Malbim on Joel 4:11:1
[Malbim on Joel 4:11:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joel/r/4:11:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Hasten and come, all the surrounding nations:** The remaining nations and multitudes will all go forth to fight a third time—Edom against Ishmael—without any military strength whatsoever, **for there, O Hashem, You have brought down Your mighty warriors,** and no mighty warrior will remain anywhere.

###### Malbim on Joel 4:13:1
[Malbim on Joel 4:13:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joel/r/4:13:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Send forth:** He again explains the three battles mentioned above. In the first, they are compared to grain still standing in the field and not yet harvested, for until then they had all lived peacefully in their own lands. He therefore commands the reapers to **send forth the sickle, for the harvest is ripe** and the time has come to reap it—that is, the full measure of their sins has been reached. In the second battle, he compares them to grapes that have already been gathered and placed in the winepress but have not yet been trodden to extract their wine. He therefore commands those who tread the grapes, **“Come, descend,”** into the winepress and tread them, **“for the winepress is full,”** and the time for treading has arrived. In the third battle, he compares them to grapes that have already been trodden, but whose wine has not yet been drawn off and separated from the seeds and skins. He therefore commands, **“Let the vats overflow,”** so that the wine will flow into the vat that receives the wine pressed from the grapes. He then explains the meaning of the parable: **“for their wickedness is great.”** They must therefore be trodden and trampled, as it says, “I have trodden the winepress alone … and I trod them in My anger.”

###### Malbim on Joel 4:14:1
[Malbim on Joel 4:14:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joel/r/4:14:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Multitudes, multitudes:** The reason vast multitudes will gather in the Valley of Jehoshaphat is that they will be **in the Valley of Decision.** It is called the “Valley of Jehoshaphat” at the time of judgment, when their case is examined and judgment is rendered to determine whether they are innocent or guilty. At that time, however, it will be called **the Valley of Decision,** because the judgment will already have been decided and concluded: they are condemned to destruction. Therefore, **the day of Hashem is near,** and He will hasten to destroy them **in the Valley of Decision,** since their judgment has already been decided and finalized.

###### Malbim on Joel 4:15:1
[Malbim on Joel 4:15:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joel/r/4:15:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**The sun and the moon grow dark:** This means that the influences of the heavenly bodies will then be suspended, **and the stars will withdraw their radiance** and cease to exert influence through the celestial order.

###### Malbim on Joel 4:16:1
[Malbim on Joel 4:16:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joel/r/4:16:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And Hashem will roar from Zion:** From there Divine governance and judgment will issue. A roar denotes a mighty sound, the opposite of a low voice, whereas “raising His voice” does not necessarily indicate a loud sound, but merely that He will not remain silent and will make His voice heard. **In Zion,** the principal dwelling place of His Divine Presence, **He will roar** with a mighty voice until it becomes known to everyone. **From Jerusalem,** which does not possess the same degree of sanctity as Zion, He will not roar so loudly, but neither will He remain silent; rather, **He will raise His voice,** signifying Divine governance. Through this roar, **the heavens and the earth will quake,** and both the natural order governing the earth and the celestial order governing the heavens will be suspended. **But Hashem will be a refuge for His people and a stronghold for the children of Israel.** Because they are His people, He will be their refuge, protecting them from every evil so that it does not befall them. Because they are the children of Israel—a name indicating that they transcend the natural order, as it says, “For you have striven with Divine beings”—He will be their stronghold, enabling them to prevail through the might of Hashem, which is greater than mere refuge.

###### Malbim on Joel 4:17:1
[Malbim on Joel 4:17:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joel/r/4:17:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And you shall know:** Then you will know with absolute clarity **that I am Hashem your God.** This is what was stated above: “You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel and that I am Hashem your God,” **dwelling in Zion, My holy mountain.** That is, “I am in the midst of Israel” because My Divine Presence dwells continually in Zion. **Jerusalem will also be holy, and strangers will no longer pass through it.** Zion, however, will possess an even greater degree of holiness, so that even Israelites will refrain from entering it unnecessarily.

###### Malbim on Joel 4:18:1
[Malbim on Joel 4:18:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joel/r/4:18:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And it shall come to pass on that day:** Divine abundance and blessing will increase exceedingly, until **the mountains drip with sweet wine** because of the abundance of sweet fruit, **the hills flow with milk** because of the multitude of cattle and sheep, and **all the channels of Judah flow with water.** Until then, there had been a shortage of water both throughout the Land of Israel generally and in Jerusalem particularly, since Jerusalem had no springs. At that time, not only will there be water in Judah, but **a spring will also issue from the House of Hashem.** A fountain will open there and spread outward until **it waters the Valley of Shittim.** According to Rabbi Saadia Gaon, this refers to the Jordan, which is near Shittim; according to Rashi, it means the Valley of Shittim literally. Ezekiel and Zechariah had already prophesied concerning this spring. Allegorically, the Torah and faith, which are compared to water, will flow from there to the entire world. Since Israel first broke out in sexual immorality and idolatry at Shittim through the worship of Baal Peor, and this was the beginning of Israel’s sin, he indicates that the holy spring will purify the defilement that began in the Valley of Shittim and remove corrupt beliefs and desires.

###### Malbim on Joel 4:19:1
[Malbim on Joel 4:19:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joel/r/4:19:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Egypt:** This includes the adherents of the faith of Ishmael. The chief destroyers of the First Temple were Assyria and Babylon, which later came under the faith represented by Egypt. From there the first war of Gog and Magog will begin, when the descendants of Edom rise against them and destroy them, as explained in Ezekiel’s prophecies. Then **Egypt will become desolate.** Afterward, the descendants of Ishmael will rise against the descendants of Edom, who destroyed the Second Temple through the Romans, the foremost of the nations of Edom. Concerning this, he says that **Edom will become a desolate wilderness,** as I explained in Ezekiel, chapters 32, 38, and 39. All this will occur **because of the violence committed against the children of Judah** during the two destructions.

###### Malbim on Joel 4:20:1

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**But Judah will be inhabited forever:** Ephraim had formerly separated from Judah and Jerusalem, but at that time they will be reunited. Judah will never again go into exile, and Jerusalem will never again be destroyed, throughout all generations.

###### Malbim on Joel 4:21:1
[Malbim on Joel 4:21:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joel/r/4:21:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And I will avenge their blood that I have not yet avenged:** The war of Gog and Magog will include only the nations of Edom and Ishmael and those associated with their faiths. Yet there are many other peoples who do not belong to either group and who also shed Israel’s blood. He therefore says that afterward He will avenge the blood that He did not yet avenge through Gog’s defeat—that is, the blood shed by nations that did not participate in the war of Gog and Magog. This will occur after **Hashem dwells in Zion,** when He will avenge the remaining bloodshed and bring those nations to justice.
