**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“Hashem appointed a great fish.”** Hashem prepared a great fish at that place, which swallowed Jonah whole without breaking his bones. It is well known that it is naturally impossible for a person to survive inside a fish for even a single hour, since a human being must breathe cool air from outside. However, because death had already been decreed upon Jonah and he was regarded as though he had been born anew, Hashem endowed him with the nature of an unborn child, which is formed and sustained for nine months within its mother’s womb without breathing external air, as Abravanel explained. This was one of the Creator’s wonders, like the miracle of Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah in the fiery furnace, and similar miracles.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“He prayed from the belly of the fish.”** Our Sages said that Jonah was initially inside a male fish, which afterward expelled him, whereupon a female fish swallowed him. It was cramped for him there because of the eggs in her belly. In truth, the term *dag*, “fish,” includes both male and female, whereas *dagah* is a collective noun, as in the verse, “The fish that were in the river died.” The expression **“from the belly of the *dagah*”** indicates that within its belly was a multitude of fish. It is therefore evident that this was a female fish during spawning, since a single fish can contain many tens of thousands of eggs, which are themselves numerous fish. Thus, the words of our Sages are true.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Questions:** (3–11) This prayer contains repeated and reiterated statements. What is written in verses 4–5 is repeated in verses 6–7 and stated a third time in verse 8. Why, moreover, is the entire prayer expressed in the past tense, a difficulty already raised by Ibn Ezra?

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“He said, ‘I called.’”** This prayer is divided into three parts. In the first part, Jonah describes the time when they cast him into the sea and he despaired of remaining alive. But when the fish swallowed him and he remained alive within its belly, he saw that a miracle and wonder were being performed for him and that he would surely live. In the second part, after the fish expelled him and he was cast once more into the depths of the great abyss, he again despaired; but when the female fish swallowed him, he saw once more that he would surely live. In the third part, when he was distressed within the female fish’s belly, he undertook to obey Hashem’s command and go to Nineveh according to the word of Hashem. He first stated the matter generally: **“In my distress I called to Hashem, and He answered me.”** This refers to both occasions when he was cast into the sea, called to Hashem, and was answered when the male and female fish swallowed him. **“From the belly of the grave I cried out.”** This refers to the belly of the female fish, which is compared to the grave prepared to destroy him; yet I trust that **“You have heard my voice”** and will bring me forth into relief.

###### Malbim on Jonah 2:4:1
[Malbim on Jonah 2:4:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Jonah/r/2:4:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“You cast me.”** This is the first part. He begins to explain his statement, “In my distress I called to Hashem.” At first, **“You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas,”** referring to their casting him from the ship into the sea. **“The current surrounded me.”** The term *nahar*, “river” or “current,” refers to flowing water and differs from the sea, whose waters ordinarily stand gathered together. But because the storm that then raged in the sea arose from the abyss, the seawater itself became turbulent and raised breakers from below. It is therefore called a *nahar*, for the waters did not remain still but flowed in a circular motion around themselves and surrounded Jonah on every side. Then **“all Your breakers and Your waves passed over me.”** He did not float upon the waves, as Rabbi Akiva did; rather, he sank into the depths of the sea, where the waters flowed downward and the waves passed over him from above.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“And I said.”** That is, at that time I thought, **“I have been driven away from before Your eyes.”** But when I witnessed the miracle by which the fish swallowed me and I remained alive, I saw that Your eyes and Your Providence were still upon me. I therefore knew that **“I will yet again look toward Your holy Temple.”**

###### Malbim on Jonah 2:6:1
[Malbim on Jonah 2:6:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Jonah/r/2:6:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“The waters surrounded me.”** This is the second part. After the fish expelled him back into the sea, **“the waters surrounded me, threatening my life.”** These were not the waters at the sea’s surface, as on the first occasion; rather, **“the abyss surrounded me,”** for the fish had carried him into the depths of the abyss and expelled him there. The **Sea of Reeds**—the waters above the abyss, called *suf* (for the fish carried him through the Sea of Reeds, by which route it transported him toward Nineveh)—**was bound around my head,** for the sea was above his head while he lay in the great abyss.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“I descended to the foundations of the mountains.”** He was in the depths of the abyss beneath the mountains, for the mountains cover the abyss from above, so that **“the earth”** covering the subterranean abyss **“placed its bars around me forever.”** It was impossible for him to rise to the water’s surface, since the earth above the abyss enclosed him like bars and doors. Nevertheless, **“You raised my life from the pit,”** for the female fish swallowed him a second time, and he again remained alive. All this explains his statement, “In my distress I called to Hashem, and He answered me.”

###### Malbim on Jonah 2:8:1
[Malbim on Jonah 2:8:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Jonah/r/2:8:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“When my soul fainted within me.”** This is the third part, in which he explains his statement, “From the belly of the grave I cried out.” For now, **“when my soul fainted within me,”** and he was close to death inside the female fish because of the pressure of the offspring within her belly, **“I remembered Hashem.”** Only now did I remember to pray, repent, and promise that I would fulfill Hashem’s command. **“My prayer came before You, into Your holy Temple.”** Our Sages said that Jonah was in the abyss beneath Mount Zion, upon which the Temple stands. Concerning this, he said, “I descended to the foundations of the mountains,” and You heard my prayer from the holy Temple.

###### Malbim on Jonah 2:9:1
[Malbim on Jonah 2:9:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Jonah/r/2:9:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“Those who cling to worthless vanities.”** Now that Jonah had undertaken to go to Nineveh and rebuke its inhabitants according to Hashem’s command, he spoke words of consolation to himself: These people of Nineveh **“cling to worthless vanities”** and believe in idolatry. Is it possible that **“they will forsake their disgrace”**—that they will abandon their idolatry? Here, *ḥesed* bears the sense of disgrace and shame. Surely they will not repent of the sin of idolatry that is in their hands. Alternatively, it means that even if they repent temporarily, they will afterward abandon their righteousness and once again become deserving of destruction.

###### Malbim on Jonah 2:10:1
[Malbim on Jonah 2:10:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Jonah/r/2:10:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“But I.”** Therefore, **“I will sacrifice to You with a voice of thanksgiving,”** for those who travel upon the sea are among the four classes of people who must give thanks. That is, I will bring a thanksgiving offering and thank You for Your kindness. Moreover, **“that which I have vowed, I will fulfill”** by going to Nineveh. As for my fear that the king of Assyria would bring calamities upon Israel—the reason I had previously refrained from going—**“salvation belongs to Hashem.”** I will trust that Hashem will save Israel from all its troubles.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“Hashem spoke to the fish.”** He stirred the fish’s spirit so that it would carry Jonah to the seashore and vomit him out onto the dry land. Our Sages said in *Pirkei de-Rabbi Eliezer* that the fish traveled with him nine hundred and sixty-five parasangs. They found an allusion to this in the numerical value of the words, **“to Hashem; and Hashem spoke to the fish, and it vomited out Jonah,”** which equals *hachi hava*—“so it was.”
