## Malbim on Jonah Chapter 4

###### Malbim on Jonah 4:1:1

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Questions:** (1–3) Why was Jonah angered by this? Did he not know that Hashem had sent him for precisely this purpose—to bring them to repentance so that the decree would be annulled? What did he mean by saying, **“Was this not what I said while I was still in my own land?”** What difference did that make? On the contrary, he had fulfilled his mission in the best possible way. When a prophet undertakes his mission and the people fail to repent, he says in such a case, “I said, ‘I have labored in vain,’” and so forth. Jonah should instead have rejoiced that he had turned many people away from sin.

###### Malbim on Jonah 4:1:2

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“It displeased Jonah.”** Abravanel explains that the “evil” mentioned here refers to illness: because of the anguish of his heart, Jonah collapsed, became ill, and wished to die. Jonah had thought that the decree would not be withdrawn from the Ninevites unless they repented both of their beliefs and opinions and of their deeds. Yet they repented only of their deeds, as it is written, “God saw all their deeds, that they had turned,” while they still persisted in idolatry. Nevertheless, Hashem relented concerning the calamity. From this, Jonah understood that Hashem had spared them because they were destined to become the rod of His anger against Israel, and this distressed him. Abravanel explains that Jonah was grieved because he had become the cause of preserving the staff of punishment that would strike Israel, for whom he had been willing to sacrifice his life. He was also angered by the thought that the Ninevites would prevail over Israel even though they still worshipped idols.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“Was this not what I said?”** That is, while I was still upon my own soil in the Land of Israel, before I went to Nineveh, I said that You would relent concerning the calamity. I already knew that You did not intend to bring the calamity upon them and that, because of Your graciousness and patience, You had relented immediately when the decree was issued, even if they would not repent properly. Indeed, they did not repent of the sin of idolatry, yet You nevertheless did not bring the calamity upon them, because You had relented concerning it from the outset. Therefore, You annulled the decree on the slightest pretext. **“For this reason I hastened to flee to Tarshish.”** That is, I did not flee because I thought that they would repent properly; had that been the case, I would not have refused a mission intended to turn those who had strayed away from their path. Rather, I fled because I knew that even if they remained worshippers of idols, You would not destroy them. Therefore, I did not wish to undertake the mission.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“And now, Hashem.”** Since they did not truly repent yet were nevertheless spared and will become a rod of punishment against Israel, **“please take my life,”** for I have caused this.

###### Malbim on Jonah 4:4:1
[Malbim on Jonah 4:4:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Jonah/r/4:4:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Questions:** What is the meaning of the statement, **“Are you rightly angry?”** This question appears entirely incomprehensible. Moreover, Jonah did not answer it, as he later did when he said, “I am rightly angry, even to the point of death.”

###### Malbim on Jonah 4:4:2
[Malbim on Jonah 4:4:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Jonah/r/4:4:2)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“Hashem said, ‘Are you angry over the good?’”** He said to him: Why are you angry? Is it because people will regard you as a false prophet when your prophecy is not fulfilled? Had I caused you to prophesy something good, you would be justified in becoming angry if the prophecy were not fulfilled. For when a prophecy promises good and it is not fulfilled, the prophet is established as a false prophet, since a favorable prediction delivered by a prophet must be fulfilled under all circumstances, even if the people afterward corrupt their deeds. This is not so with a prediction of calamity: if the people repent, the decree is annulled, and the prophet is not thereby proven false, as Jeremiah explained to Hananiah son of Azzur (Jeremiah 28).

###### Malbim on Jonah 4:5:1

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Questions:** Why did Jonah sit to the east of the city to see what would happen within it? Did he not already know that Hashem had relented concerning the calamity?

###### Malbim on Jonah 4:5:2
[Malbim on Jonah 4:5:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Jonah/r/4:5:2)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“He sat … until he would see what would happen in the city.”** Jonah thought that although the decree had been annulled and there would be no complete overthrow, it was nevertheless impossible that no trace of punishment would remain; some calamity would surely befall the city. This resembled the incident of the Golden Calf, concerning which Scripture says, “Hashem relented concerning the calamity,” yet afterward, “Hashem struck the people who had made the calf.” Abravanel explained it similarly.

###### Malbim on Jonah 4:6:1
[Malbim on Jonah 4:6:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Jonah/r/4:6:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Questions:** (6–11) What was the purpose of the gourd, and what lesson did Hashem teach Jonah through it?

###### Malbim on Jonah 4:6:2
[Malbim on Jonah 4:6:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Jonah/r/4:6:2)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“God appointed a gourd.”** The shade of the shelter did not provide much protection, as indicated by the words, “He sat beneath it in the shade.” This shows that shade did not cover the entire shelter, for its, for its walls provided protection only on the side where the sun was shining. In the morning, Jonah had to sit beneath the eastern wall, while at midday there was no shade at all. The gourd therefore provided shade above his head, **“to save him from his distress”**—that is, to protect his head, which was vulnerable to being struck by the sun’s heat. **“Jonah rejoiced greatly over the gourd,”** because he inferred from it that Hashem wished him to remain east of the city, since some event was about to occur there. God was keeping him there so that he might witness the punishment of the wicked.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“It struck the gourd.”** The worm severed it below at its root, causing it to wither.

###### Malbim on Jonah 4:8:1

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“A deafening east wind.”** Its tremendous roaring deafens the ears, and it is an exceedingly hot wind.

###### Malbim on Jonah 4:9:1
[Malbim on Jonah 4:9:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Jonah/r/4:9:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“Are you rightly angry over the gourd?”** He asked him: Is this proper—that you should become angry over a gourd, something so insignificant? **“He said, ‘I am rightly angry.’”** That is, it is appropriate for me to be angry because this matter reaches **“to the point of death.”** Without the gourd, I am going to die. The intense, burning heat had caused him to develop a fever, until he fainted and reached the gates of death.

###### Malbim on Jonah 4:10:1
[Malbim on Jonah 4:10:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Jonah/r/4:10:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“Hashem said, ‘You had concern for the gourd.’”** I have explained elsewhere that there is a distinction between **having concern** and related expressions such as having compassion or mercy. A person has concern for something because he needs it, as in the verse, “Do not let your eyes have concern for your possessions.” He said to Jonah: You had concern for the gourd because you needed it to provide you with shade, although otherwise there was nothing that should have caused you grief over it. You had no concern for it because you had labored to plant or cultivate it—concerning which He said, **“for which you did not labor,”** since a craftsman naturally has concern for the work of his own hands. Nor did you value it because the thing itself was precious or enduring, **“for it came into being overnight and perished overnight.”** It was merely a withering flower of no lasting substance.

###### Malbim on Jonah 4:11:1
[Malbim on Jonah 4:11:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Jonah/r/4:11:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**“And should I not have concern for Nineveh?”** Its inhabitants are the work of My hands, and it is something precious, for it is **“the great city.”** Although many there worship idols, it contains more than one hundred and twenty thousand people **“who do not know their right hand from their left”**—who lack the understanding to distinguish between worship of the one true God, represented by the right side, as it is written, “Because He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved,” and “I am continually with You; You have grasped my right hand,” and worship of that which is on the left—nature and the arrangement of the stars, which are attributed to the left side. They should not be punished for their lack of understanding. Furthermore, **“there are many animals”** within it; if human beings sinned, what sin did the animals commit? Through this, Jonah also received an answer concerning Israel’s punishment. They had already learned to distinguish between right and left, for they had received a Divine law and the true faith. They were therefore deserving of punishment for the idolatry they practiced, even though the people of Nineveh would not be punished for it.
