**רק שללה.** שביריחו נתנו לאוצר ה':

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Only its spoil.** Unlike the spoil of Jericho, which was placed in the treasury of Hashem.

**ובהמתה.** ששם החרים אותם, עתה **תבוזו לכם**, כי פה לא יהיה הכבוש כולו נסיי כמו שהיתה נפילת חומת יריחו שלכן הקדישו השלל, רק יהיה ע"י תחבולת מלחמה, ולכן **שים לך ארב לעיר**:

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And its livestock.** At Jericho, the livestock was devoted to destruction; now, however, **you may take it as spoil for yourselves.** For here the conquest would not be entirely miraculous, as was the fall of Jericho’s wall, on account of which its spoil was consecrated. Rather, the city would be conquered through military strategy. Therefore, **set an ambush for the city.**

**The Questions**
(3) Why did Joshua send this ambush two days before the second ambush?

**ויקם.** כמו שצוהו ה', א] הוא בראשם, ב] **וכל עם המלחמה: ויבחר.** לקיים מ"ש שים לך ארב:

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And Joshua arose.** He acted as Hashem had commanded him: 1] He himself went at their head. 2] **All the people of war** went with him. **And he selected.** This was to fulfill the command, “Set an ambush for the city.”

**וישלחם לילה.** זה היה שני ימים לפני הכבוש כמו שיתבאר הטעם בפסוק ט':

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And he sent them out at night.** This occurred two days before the conquest, as the reason will be explained in verse 9.

###### Malbim on Joshua 8:4:1
[Malbim on Joshua 8:4:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joshua/r/8:4:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**See that you lie in ambush against the city.** There are several kinds of ambushes, as can be seen from the account of Abimelech (Judges 9:43). 1] An ambush directed against the inhabitants of a city, intended to fall upon them suddenly when they emerge from the city gate. Such an ambush must be positioned in front of the city rather than behind it—that is, on the side where the gate is located—so that it is ready for those coming through the gate. 2] An ambush in the countryside, as it says, “The men of Shechem stationed ambushers against him upon the mountaintops, and they robbed everyone who passed them along the road” (ibid. 9:25). Such an ambush must be positioned far from the city, lest those who were robbed return and warn its inhabitants, who would then guard themselves against the ambushers. 3] An ambush directed against both groups together, as in Judges 9:43–44, where Abimelech divided his people into three companies. Two companies lay in ambush for those going out into the countryside, while one company stood at the entrance to the city gate to prevent them from returning to the city. In this kind of operation, some of the ambushers may be stationed behind the city if the field where the people gather lies on that side. Likewise, if the gathering place is distant from the city, they will lie in ambush there. But in this case, not all the forces are prepared to ambush: Only those in the field actually lie in ambush, while those near the city merely hold a strategic position to prevent the fugitives from escaping. In all three arrangements, the ambush is directed not against the city itself but against its inhabitants. Joshua therefore said, **See that you lie in ambush against the city**—against the city itself, not its inhabitants, unlike all three arrangements mentioned above. Therefore: 1] **Lie in ambush behind the city**, unlike the first type. 2] **Do not go very far from the city**, unlike the second type. 3] **And all of you shall be ready**, unlike the third type.

**ואני.** אהיה נגד היוצאים אל שדה המערכה:

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And I.** I will confront those who come out to the battlefield.

**כאשר בראשונה.** ר"ל אחר שבראשונה יצאו כל שכן שיצאו עתה:

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**As at the first.** That is, since they came out on the first occasion, they would certainly come out now.

###### Malbim on Joshua 8:6:1

**השאלות**
(ו - ח) מה טעם כי יאמרו כי נסים הם, וכפל ונסנו לפניהם? ומה טעם ראו צויתי אתכם?

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**The Questions**
(6–8) What is the significance of the words, “For they will say, ‘They are fleeing’”? Why does he repeat, “And we will flee before them”? And what is the meaning of, “See, I have commanded you”?

###### Malbim on Joshua 8:6:2
[Malbim on Joshua 8:6:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joshua/r/8:6:2)

**כי יאמרו.** ר"ל בוודאי כי לא ירגישו כי בערמה אנו נסים, כי יתלו אחר שנסנו בראשונה נמוג לבבנו מפניהם ולכן אנו נסים עתה שנית. וסדר דבריו בצלעות מקבילות, שמ"ש עד התיקנו אותם מן העיר, עונה עמ"ש **ונסנו** לפניהם, ומ"ש כי יאמרו נסים לפנינו הוא עונה עמ"ש ויצאו אחרינו:

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**For they will say.** That is, they certainly will not realize that our flight is a stratagem. They will assume that because we fled from them on the first occasion, our hearts melted before them, and therefore we are fleeing from them a second time. Joshua arranged his words in parallel clauses: “Until we have drawn them away from the city” corresponds to **“And we will flee before them,”** while “For they will say, ‘They are fleeing before us’” corresponds to “And they will come out after us.”

###### Malbim on Joshua 8:6:3
[Malbim on Joshua 8:6:3](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joshua/r/8:6:3)

**ונסנו.** ואנחנו נהיה נסים והולכים גם כשיהיו מועתקים מן העיר עד נעתיקם אל המדבר, כדי שיהיה להאורב עת להצית העיר ולהסגיר לפניהם הצד הדרומי כמו שיתבאר:

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And we will flee.** We will continue fleeing even after they have been drawn away from the city, until we draw them into the wilderness. This will give the ambush sufficient time to set the city on fire and block the southern route before them, as will be explained.

###### Malbim on Joshua 8:7:1
[Malbim on Joshua 8:7:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joshua/r/8:7:1)

**ואתם תקומו.** בעוד שאנו נסים, ע"י שתראו סימן הכידון:

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And you shall arise.** While we are fleeing, you shall arise when you see the signal of the javelin.

###### Malbim on Joshua 8:7:2
[Malbim on Joshua 8:7:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joshua/r/8:7:2)

**מהאורב.** ר"ל ממקום המארב:

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**From the ambush.** That is, from the place of ambush.

###### Malbim on Joshua 8:8:1
[Malbim on Joshua 8:8:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joshua/r/8:8:1)

**ראו צויתי אתכם.** ר"ל בל תאמרו אחר שהתיר ה' לבוז שללה, כמ"ש רק שללה ובהמתה תבוזו לכם, תקדימו להציל השלל טרם תשרפו העיר, לכן אמר ראו כי צויתי אתכם, ומלמדכם כונת דבר ה':

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**See, I have commanded you.** That is, do not say: Since Hashem permitted you to take its spoil, as He said, “Only its spoil and its livestock you may take as plunder for yourselves,” you should first secure the spoil before burning the city. Therefore, Joshua said, “See that you follow what I have commanded you,” thereby teaching them the proper meaning of Hashem’s command.

###### Malbim on Joshua 8:9:1
[Malbim on Joshua 8:9:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joshua/r/8:9:1)

**השאלות**
(ט) איך אפשר שישבו מים לעיר ולא פגעו בם אנשי בית אל שבאו לעזרת עי מן המערב? ועוד הלא אמר (פסוק יד) שארבו מאחרי העיר והוא בדרום, כי פני העיר היה בצפון כמ"ש (פסוק י"א)?

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**The Questions**
(9) How could they remain west of the city without encountering the men of Bethel, who came from the west to assist Ai? Moreover, Scripture says (verse 14) that they lay in ambush behind the city, which would mean to its south, since the front of the city faced north, as stated in verse 11.

###### Malbim on Joshua 8:9:2
[Malbim on Joshua 8:9:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joshua/r/8:9:2)

**וישלחם.** הטעם ששלח את האורב הזה שני ימים קודם יום המלחמה, כי עם המלחמה חנו מצפון לעי, והאורב עמד מרחוק מעי בצד דרומית כמו שיתבאר, ולהגיע לשם מבלי שירגיש אדם בלכתם היו צריכים להקיף דרך רחוק כמה פרסאות מן העיר בשדות ומדבריות בל יתראו:

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And he sent them.** Joshua sent this ambush two days before the battle because the fighting force would encamp north of Ai, whereas the ambush would be stationed at a distance from Ai on its southern side, as will be explained. To reach that location without anyone noticing their movements, they had to take a long circuitous route, traveling several *parasangs* from the city through fields and wilderness so that they would not be seen.

###### Malbim on Joshua 8:9:3

**וילן.** להיות מוכן ליום מחר:

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And he lodged there.** So that he would be prepared for the following day.

###### Malbim on Joshua 8:9:4
[Malbim on Joshua 8:9:4](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joshua/r/8:9:4)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Between Bethel and Ai.** It is impossible to say that they were stationed directly west of the city, in the area **between Bethel and Ai**, for if so, how could the men of Bethel, who came to assist Ai, have failed to see them, as stated in verse 17? Moreover, this ambush was stationed behind the city, as stated in verses 4 and 14, which means on its southern side. Since the gate of Ai was on the north, where Israel’s camp was situated, as stated in verse 11, the rear of the city was necessarily to the south. The ambush must therefore have been positioned southwest of the city. Because its position extended southward, it was behind the city; and because it also extended westward, it was west of the city. The men of Bethel consequently did not encounter them when traveling directly toward Ai, for the ambush lay off to their side.

###### Malbim on Joshua 8:10:1

**ויפקד. הוא** היה שר צבא הפוקד ומצביא את העם בפעם ההיא:

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And he mustered.** Joshua himself served on that occasion as the military commander who mustered and organized the people.

###### Malbim on Joshua 8:10:2
[Malbim on Joshua 8:10:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joshua/r/8:10:2)

**ויעל**, כפי שני התנאים שא"ל ה', א] **הוא** בראשם:

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And he went up.** This fulfilled the two conditions Hashem had given him: 1] **He himself** went at their head.

###### Malbim on Joshua 8:11:1
[Malbim on Joshua 8:11:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joshua/r/8:11:1)

**השאלות**
(יא - יב) מה היה האורב השני אשר שם, ופשטות הכתוב מורה שהיה ג"כ מים לעיר ושם הלא עמד האורב הראשון ולא ידענו מה היה עבודת השני? - מ"ש וישימו העם וכו' אין לו באור? ולמה קרא לאורב הזה בשם עקבו, וכן כינוי עקבו משמע של המחנה? למה הלך יהושע תוך העמק?

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**The Questions**
(11–12) What was the second ambush that Joshua stationed there? The plain meaning of the verse indicates that it too was west of the city, but the first ambush was already stationed there, and we do not know what task the second was meant to perform. The words “And they stationed the people,” etc., are also unexplained. Why is this ambush called “its rear guard,” and why does the possessive form “its rear” appear to refer to the camp? Why did Joshua go into the valley?

###### Malbim on Joshua 8:11:2
[Malbim on Joshua 8:11:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joshua/r/8:11:2)

ב] **וכל העם עלו: ויבאו נגד העיר.** פתח שער העיר היה בצפון, ולכן חנו מצפון לעי:

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
2] **And all the people went up. And they came opposite the city.** The city gate was on the northern side, and therefore they encamped north of Ai.

###### Malbim on Joshua 8:11:3

**והגי.** עמק היה מפסיק ביניהם ובין המדינה:

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And the valley.** A valley separated them from the city.

###### Malbim on Joshua 8:12:1
[Malbim on Joshua 8:12:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joshua/r/8:12:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And he took about five thousand men.** There was a great difference between this ambush and the first. The first ambush was stationed southwest of the city, at some distance from it—although not exceedingly far, as Joshua had said, “Do not go very far”—and was concealed from the city’s inhabitants, as explained above (verse 9). This ambush, however, was stationed beside the main camp, which stood north of the city, but extended westward. Thus, the camp on the north, together with the ambush extending from its side toward the west, formed the shape of a reversed letter *dalet*. For this reason, the following verse calls this ambush “its flanking force.” A flanking force surrounds the enemy, and the purpose of this unit was to encircle the enemy from two sides, in accordance with ordinary military strategy. This ambush was not concealed at all, for the city’s inhabitants could see it, since it stood beside the camp close to the city. Thus it says:

###### Malbim on Joshua 8:13:1
[Malbim on Joshua 8:13:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joshua/r/8:13:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And they positioned the people.** That is, they prepared the forces that would seize the city: the camp situated to the north and its flanking force—the five thousand men whom they stationed to encircle the enemy. These men stood beside the camp, west of the city, at its northwestern corner. The army was therefore arranged in two lines: one line north of the city, and another line of five thousand men extending from it along the western side, in this formation *[a diagram appears in the original]*. All this was plainly visible to the men of Ai. You will see below the great stratagem Joshua accomplished through this arrangement.

###### Malbim on Joshua 8:13:2
[Malbim on Joshua 8:13:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joshua/r/8:13:2)

**וילך יהושע.** ר"ל הגם שביום חנו לפני העמק, בלילה התחיל יהושע ואנשיו ללכת בתוך העמק שהיה בין המחנה ובין העי כדי שיראו אנשי העי שמתקרבים אל העיר, וז"ש:

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And Joshua went.** Although they had encamped before the valley during the day, Joshua and his men began advancing during the night into the valley between the camp and Ai, so that the men of Ai would see them approaching the city. Thus it says:

###### Malbim on Joshua 8:14:1

**השאלות**
(יד) למה לא ראם מלך העי עד יום שלאחריו? ומהו למועד? ולמה הלך לפני הערבה ולא לפני שער העיר או העמק?

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**The Questions**
(14) Why did the king of Ai not see them until the following day? What is the meaning of “at the appointed time”? And why did he go toward the Arabah rather than toward the city gate or the valley?

###### Malbim on Joshua 8:14:2

**ויהי כראות.** כאשר ראה מלך העי שהתקרבו והלכו בעמק:

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And it came to pass when he saw.** When the king of Ai saw that they had approached and were advancing through the valley:

###### Malbim on Joshua 8:14:3
[Malbim on Joshua 8:14:3](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joshua/r/8:14:3)

**וימהרו וישכימו ויצאו לקראת ישראל.** ולא המתינו עד שיעלו מן העמק ויתקרבו עד לפני השער כמו בפעם הראשון, אחר שגם בפעם הראשון הכום במורד היינו בהעמק הזה חשבו שגם עתה יכום שמה:

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**They hurried, arose early, and went out to meet Israel.** They did not wait for the Israelites to ascend from the valley and approach the city gate, as they had on the first occasion. Since they had defeated them on the descent the first time—that is, in this very valley—they thought they would defeat them there again.

###### Malbim on Joshua 8:14:4
[Malbim on Joshua 8:14:4](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joshua/r/8:14:4)

**למועד.** יהושע קבע זמן מוגבל עם האורב ששלח לפני שני ימים כי ביום השלישי בשעה פלונית ישים על העיר, למען יהיו מוכנים אז, ובמועד הזה נשקה המלחמה:

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**At the appointed time.** Joshua had established a specific time with the ambush he had sent two days earlier: On the third day, at a designated hour, they were to attack the city, so that they would be prepared at that time. The battle commenced at this appointed time.

###### Malbim on Joshua 8:14:5
[Malbim on Joshua 8:14:5](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joshua/r/8:14:5)

**לפני הערבה.** היא ערבות יריחו שהיתה במזרח, כי אחר שמחנה ישראל עמדו כמין ג"ם בצד צפון ומערב, לא היה אפשר להם להתקרב לצד ההוא לבל יהיו מוקפים משתי רוחות, והוכרחו לנטות אל הקרן המגביל כנגדו לצד המזרח, ויהושע הבין כי בהכרח יתיצבו שם, ושם ילכדם בחכמתו כמו שית':

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Before the Arabah.** This refers to the plains of Jericho, which lay to the east. Since the Israelite camp was arranged like the letter *gimel* along the northern and western sides, the men of Ai could not approach from those directions, lest they become surrounded on two sides. They were therefore compelled to turn toward the opposite corner, on the eastern side. Joshua understood that they would necessarily take their position there, where he would trap them through his strategy, as will be explained.

###### Malbim on Joshua 8:14:6
[Malbim on Joshua 8:14:6](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joshua/r/8:14:6)

**והוא לא ידע כי אורב לו מאחרי העיר.** שהגם שראה את האורב שהיה לפני העיר ונשמר מפניו לנטות לצד מזרח, לא ידע מן האורב הראשון של שלשים אלף שעמד מאחרי העיר:

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**But he did not know that an ambush lay behind the city.** Although he saw the ambush positioned before the city and guarded against it by turning eastward, he did not know about the first ambush of thirty thousand men stationed behind the city.

###### Malbim on Joshua 8:15:1
[Malbim on Joshua 8:15:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joshua/r/8:15:1)

**וינגעו.** עשו א"ע כאילו המה מנוגעים, וי"ל שהוא מבנין התפעל כמו (ויקרא יח, כד) אל תטמאו בכל אלה, להראב"ע, ומורה על הפעולה המדומה, כמו מתעשר, מתרושש:

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And they acted as though they had been struck.** They made themselves appear as if they had suffered defeat. It may be a reflexive form, like “Do not defile yourselves through any of these” (Leviticus 18:24), according to Ibn Ezra, and it denotes a feigned action, like “one who pretends to be rich” or “one who pretends to be poor.”

###### Malbim on Joshua 8:15:2
[Malbim on Joshua 8:15:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Joshua/r/8:15:2)

**וינוסו דרך המדבר.** הוא מדברה בית און הנזכר (לקמן יח, יב), שהיה בין יריחו ובין בית אל נגד העי בצד הצפוני (כי עי היה אצל בית און, למעלה ז, ב), נמצא חזרו מחנה ישראל לאחוריהם לצד צפון ביושר ג"כ כמין ד' הפוכה:

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And they fled by way of the wilderness.** This was the wilderness of Beth-aven mentioned below (18:12), which lay between Jericho and Bethel, opposite Ai on its northern side, for Ai was near Beth-aven, as stated above (7:2). Thus, the Israelite camp withdrew directly northward, once again forming the shape of a reversed letter *dalet*.

(כ - כב) אחר שאמר והעם הנס נהפך אל הרודף למה כפל שנית ויהושע וכו' וכל ישראל וכו' וישובו וכו', ויפלא איך היו לישראל בתוך הלא לא היו מוקפים רק מצד צפון ומצד דרום ועדיין היו יכולים לברוח לצד מזרח או לצד מערב?

**The Questions**
(20–22) After Scripture says, “The people who had been fleeing turned against their pursuers,” why does it repeat, “And Joshua,” etc., “and all Israel,” etc., “turned back,” etc.? Furthermore, how were the men of Ai trapped in the midst of Israel? They were surrounded only from the north and south and could still have escaped eastward or westward.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And they turned**, etc., **and they had no direction in which to flee**, etc. At first, when Joshua extended his hand with the javelin, the fleeing Israelites stopped and turned to face the enemy. The enemy became terrified upon seeing the city’s smoke behind them and the Israelite camp before them. They stood bewildered, not knowing what to do. After some time, when Joshua estimated that the ambush had had sufficient time to leave the city and block the enemy’s escape so that not a single fugitive could get away, **they turned back** and began striking the men of Ai.

**ויהיו לישראל בתוך**, נמצא עתה היו מוקפים מכל ארבע רוחותם, כי מחנה יהושע הקיפה אותם מצד צפון ומצד מערב כמין ג"ם, והאורב בא כנגדם מצד דרום, וצד מזרח הפתוח היה נגד יריחו שכבר היה תחת ממשלת ישראל. ובזה תראה חכמת יהושע, כי זה היסוד בתכסיסי מלחמה להקיף את האויב מכל עבריו:

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And they were in the midst of Israel.** They were now surrounded on all four sides. Joshua’s camp enclosed them from the north and west in the shape of the letter *gimel*, while the ambush advanced against them from the south. The open eastern side faced Jericho, which was already under Israelite control. This demonstrates Joshua’s military wisdom, for a fundamental principle of military strategy is to surround the enemy on every side.

**The Questions**
(30–32) Our Sages expressed three opinions concerning this commandment, and all are difficult to reconcile with the plain meaning of the verses. The Torah commands (in the portion of Ki Tavo) that on the day Israel crossed the Jordan, they were to erect stones, coat them with plaster, build an altar from them, and write the words of the Torah upon them. In the Book of Joshua, chapter 4 states that Joshua erected the stones at Gilgal, whereas here it says that he built the altar on Mount Ebal. According to the first opinion—the anonymous Mishnah in *Sotah* 32a—on the very day they crossed the Jordan, they traveled to Mount Ebal, built the altar, wrote the Torah upon the stones, removed the plaster, returned that same day, and lodged at Gilgal. Rabbi Isaac Abravanel raised numerous objections to this view: 1] If so, extraordinary miracles were required for them to travel sixty *mil* there and back in a single day while also writing all the words of the Torah and building the altar. Why does Scripture not mention these miracles? 2] Why is this account not recorded in its chronological place? The second opinion appears in the Jerusalem Talmud (Sotah 7:3). Rabbi Elazar maintains that two mounds stood near Gilgal, one of which they called Mount Gerizim and the other Mount Ebal. But this too is astonishing: Why did Scripture not record this event in its proper place, particularly when its present placement might lead us to think that Joshua acted contrary to the Torah, which commanded that the altar be built and the Torah written immediately on the day they crossed the Jordan? The third opinion appears in *Sanhedrin* 44a: Rav Shila said that Hashem told Joshua, “‘Arise, go’—you brought this upon yourself. I said, ‘And it shall be on the day that you cross the Jordan, you shall erect large stones for yourself,’ but you traveled sixty *mil* away.” After Rav Shila departed, Rav appointed an expositor and taught: “‘As Hashem commanded Moses, so Joshua did.’” According to Rav Shila, this event occurred several days after the crossing of the Jordan, which resolves all the other difficulties. One question remains, however: How could Joshua have transgressed Moses’ command? Moreover, how did Rav make the crooked straight merely by expounding, “As Hashem commanded Moses, so Joshua did,” when Joshua seemingly did not act accordingly? Rav should have explained that a miracle occurred, following the first opinion, or that there were two nearby mounds, following the second.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Then Joshua built.** According to the plain meaning, Joshua performed this act after the battle of Ai, in accordance with the sequence of the verses. The Torah says: “And it shall be on the day that you cross the Jordan,” etc., “you shall erect for yourself large stones and coat them with plaster. You shall write upon them all the words of this Torah when you have crossed,” etc.; “And it shall be when you have crossed the Jordan, you shall erect these stones, concerning which I command you today, on Mount Ebal, and you shall coat them with plaster. There you shall build an altar to Hashem your God, an altar of stones,” etc.; “You shall offer burnt offerings upon it,” etc.; “And you shall write upon the stones all the words of this Torah” (Deuteronomy 27:2–8). We must understand why the command to erect the stones, coat them with plaster, and write the words of the Torah upon them is repeated twice. Why does Scripture first say, “On the day that you cross,” but afterward, “When you have crossed”? Why does it initially say merely, “You shall erect for yourself,” without specifying that the stones were to be erected on Mount Ebal, and only afterward say that they were to be erected there? And why does it say, “You shall write upon them all the words of this Torah when you have crossed,” when the words “when you have crossed” appear superfluous? From this it is clear that these are two commands applying at two different times. First it says, “And it shall be on the day that you cross the Jordan, you shall erect for yourself large stones.” This was the first command, which they were required to fulfill on the very day they crossed the Jordan, without delay. Joshua did exactly this, erecting large stones at Gilgal on that same day, as related above (4:8, 20). These served as a sign and memorial of the miracle performed for them at the Jordan. The Torah then told them, “You shall coat them,” etc., “and write,” etc., “when you have crossed.” That is, afterward, once you have crossed—not “on the day you cross,” but sometime after crossing—you shall perform another commandment with these stones: You shall coat them with plaster and write the words of the Torah upon them. Since this second command was mentioned initially only in passing, Scripture stated it briefly. It then explained in detail how this second commandment was to be performed. Thus it says: What I have told you—“You shall write,” etc., “when you have crossed”—you shall perform in the following manner: **When you have crossed the Jordan**—meaning several days afterward, for here it does not say “on the day you cross”—**you shall erect these stones on Mount Ebal.** You shall take them from the lodging place where you first erected them and set them up on Mount Ebal. There you shall fulfill the second commandment with all its details: coating the stones with plaster, building an altar from them, writing the words of the Torah upon them, and making the writing exceedingly clear. According to this explanation, Joshua omitted nothing from the commandments of his teacher. The initial words, “On the day that you cross,” refer only to erecting the stones. The subsequent commands, “You shall coat them” and “you shall write,” mean that the stones should be suitable for writing the Torah upon them “when you have crossed”—that is, at a later time. Our interpretation accords with the opinion of Rav Shila in *Sanhedrin* 44a, who maintains that this event occurred after the battle of Ai, and with the opinion of Rav (there), who expounded that Joshua did not deviate from Moses’ instructions. Rav intended precisely what we have written, contrary to the explanation of Tosafot (s.v. *ve’atem*) there.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**To bless the people.** According to Ibn Ezra’s interpretation in his commentary on the Torah, the six tribes upon Mount Gerizim recited the blessings, while the six upon Mount Ebal recited the curses; the Levites standing below recited only the declarations beginning with “Cursed” that are written there. Thus it says, “These shall stand to bless,” etc., “and these shall stand for the curse,” etc., “and the Levites shall proclaim” (Deuteronomy 27:12–14). Scripture therefore says that Israel stood opposite the priests and Levites, for the Levites began with “Cursed.” There was no need to relate that here, since it was already known that they acted according to the Torah. The sense of the verse is: **Israel was first to bless the people.** Israel began by reciting the blessing first, unlike the Levites, who began with the curse. The word “Israel” refers to those pronouncing the blessing, and the sense is: Those who first blessed the people were Israel. According to the commentators’ interpretation, the definite article in “the people” is out of place here, and the expression “the people Israel” would likewise be unusual. The words “and half of it,” with the possessive suffix, refer to the particular half already designated in the Torah to recite the curses. Without the suffix, “half” would denote merely any unspecified half.
