## Malbim on Micah Chapter 2

###### Malbim on Micah 2:1:1
[Malbim on Micah 2:1:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Micah/r/2:1:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Woe to those who devise iniquity and work evil.** While they are upon their beds, secluded by themselves, they cannot actually oppress or rob anyone, but can only devise iniquitous schemes. Yet **upon their beds they devise iniquity**—plans to oppress and rob—and also **work evil.** He explains how they can be regarded as working evil at that time: **At the light of morning** they immediately **carry it out, because it is within the power of their hand.** Thus, their devising of iniquity is considered as though they had already committed it, since nothing prevents them from putting their plans into action.

###### Malbim on Micah 2:2:1
[Malbim on Micah 2:2:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Micah/r/2:2:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And they covet.** When they covet another person’s **field**, they seize it by force. Afterward, they covet **houses**; but since a house is situated in a city and cannot be openly seized, **they take them** through a business transaction, exchanging the fields they stole for the houses. Then **they oppress a man and his house**: after the exchange, they withhold the house from him—this is called oppression, for they retain what is rightfully due to him—which they can easily do even in the city. They also take **a man and his inheritance**: after seizing his fields, they ultimately take the owner of the field as well, for in his poverty he sells himself to them as a slave.

###### Malbim on Micah 2:3:1
[Malbim on Micah 2:3:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Micah/r/2:3:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Therefore, behold, I am devising against this family**—these robbers—**an evil** that will be like an iron yoke around their necks, **from which they will be unable to remove their necks. Nor will you walk upright**, lifting your necks above the yoke, **for it will be an evil time.** When calamity comes upon individuals during a time of peace, there is hope that they may escape it; but when it is a time of calamity for the entire world, there is no possibility of escaping the evil.

###### Malbim on Micah 2:4:1
[Malbim on Micah 2:4:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Micah/r/2:4:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**On that day, one shall take up a parable against you and lament with a lamentation.** He portrays the words that will be spoken concerning these plunderers as both a proverbial discourse and a lament. In a lament, one person chants the dirge and another responds; accordingly, he depicts one person as taking up the lament while the others answer him.

###### Malbim on Micah 2:4:2
[Malbim on Micah 2:4:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Micah/r/2:4:2)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**He shall say, “We have been utterly plundered.”** He depicts figuratively how the enemies destroyed their houses and afterward divided their fields by lot. He portrays the aforementioned family, whose practice was to seize fields and exchange them for houses, as seeing the enemy plunder its house and **saying, “We have been utterly plundered”**—they have plundered my house. The respondent answers him—and this constitutes the lament—**“He exchanges the portion of my people”**: You acquired this house in exchange for the field, and now the enemy will make another exchange, returning the portion to its rightful owners. He then asks, **“How does he remove it from me?”** That is, how can he remove from me what belongs to me—namely, the field? Was not the field given to me in exchange for the house? The respondent answers, **“To restore what was plundered, he apportions our fields”**: The enemy apportions the fields in order to restore what you seized and plundered, since this is being done to take the stolen property from your possession.

###### Malbim on Micah 2:5:1
[Malbim on Micah 2:5:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Micah/r/2:5:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Therefore, you will have no one to cast a measuring line by lot.** You will receive no portion in the redistribution of the fields, since the fields in your possession were stolen and are now being returned to their owners. This is a figurative way of saying that the enemy will destroy the houses but leave some of the poorest people of the land in the fields as vinedressers and farmers, so that they will regain the fields that had been stolen from them. But the family that seized fields and houses and enriched itself through robbery will have no portion or inheritance among the congregation of Hashem.

###### Malbim on Micah 2:6:1
[Malbim on Micah 2:6:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Micah/r/2:6:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Do not preach.** He begins to dispute with them over their refusal to listen to the true prophets. The sense of the verse is: **Is it said, O house of Jacob, “Do not preach what they preach”?** This was a common saying among the house of Jacob: They would tell the prophets, **Do not preach** the things **that they preach**—do not utter prophecies of rebuke or predictions of calamity, which the prophets customarily proclaim and prophesy, for we do not wish to hear such prophecies. Secondly, they say, **They shall not preach to these; disgrace shall not depart.** The sense is: **They shall not proclaim a disgrace that will not depart.** At the very least, they should not preach rebukes concerning sins, thereby publicizing the people’s disgrace and evil deeds, for these humiliations and reproaches will never recede; rather, they will remain forever as a source of shame, as in, “His reproach shall not be blotted out.” They should not utter prophecies that will subject the people to everlasting humiliation.

###### Malbim on Micah 2:7:1
[Malbim on Micah 2:7:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Micah/r/2:7:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Is it said, O house of Jacob.** All this is a saying spoken in the house of Jacob—that is, an expression commonly found upon their lips.

###### Malbim on Micah 2:7:2
[Malbim on Micah 2:7:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Micah/r/2:7:2)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Is the spirit of Hashem constrained?** They further argue against the prophets’ words foretelling punishment and calamity: **Is the spirit of Hashem impatient?** Does Hashem become emotionally affected by the evil deeds of human beings, His patience too short to endure them, so that in His impatience He becomes angry and wrathful and decrees calamity upon the people? Or, **Are these His deeds?** If you say that this is not because He becomes emotionally aroused to anger against those who transgress His will, as though He cannot remain patient, they ask: Are these truly His deeds—to inflict evil upon His creatures? Surely the deeds of Hashem are goodness, kindness, mercy, and grace, not the decreeing of evil and calamity. All this the house of Jacob says to the prophets. He answers them: **Do not My words benefit one who walks uprightly?** Why do you complain that My words are evil and announce calamity? For one who walks along the upright path, My words bring good and are not evil; rather, he rejoices in them, and they are words of consolation to him. The words of prophecy testify that Hashem watches over human conduct and repays each person according to his deeds. One who walks uprightly rejoices in this, for it allows him to hope in Hashem for righteousness and kindness in accordance with his conduct, as in, “It is a joy to the righteous when justice is done.”

###### Malbim on Micah 2:8:1
[Malbim on Micah 2:8:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Micah/r/2:8:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And against.** If so, why do My words rise up **against My people** as an adversary and an enemy? Since My words benefit one who walks uprightly, how can those same beneficial words confront My people as an oppressive enemy? The reason is **because of the garment**: My words rise up against the garment and the cloak **that you strip from those passing by securely.** You strip peaceful travelers of their garments and the cloaks they wear, so that they resemble **those returning from battle**; for you attack wayfarers, wage war against them, and plunder their possessions as victors plunder those defeated in battle. It is against these evil deeds that My words rise up as an enemy.

###### Malbim on Micah 2:9:1
[Malbim on Micah 2:9:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Micah/r/2:9:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**You drive the women of My people from their cherished homes.** As he will explain afterward, they would take women from their husbands’ homes as security for debts and defile them through fornication. Concerning this he says, **From their children you take away My glory**, for the children of these women became subject to doubts concerning their legitimacy, and the Divine splendor departed from them, since the Divine Presence rests only upon the families of Israel whose lineage is unblemished. He says to them: Will this continue **forever**? Will **you drive the women of My people away forever**, while I remain patient and silent toward you?

###### Malbim on Micah 2:10:1
[Malbim on Micah 2:10:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Micah/r/2:10:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Arise and depart** from the land into exile, **for this is not the resting place.** You cannot rest in the land while conducting yourselves in this manner, nor can such a condition be called rest. He explains what he meant by “You drive the women of My people from their cherished homes.” He says, **Because of defilement you take a pledge**—you seize and hold a married woman as security, removing her from her husband’s home, in order to defile her through fornication. **And with a grievous pledge**—the pledge is explicit: you take her as security on the expressly stated condition that she submit to you and thereby be defiled. All this answers their demand that the prophets not prophesy rebukes and predictions of calamity against them. They had argued that it was inconceivable for Hashem to bring evil and punishment, asking whether Hashem was too impatient to endure their sin. In response, he shows them that Hashem cannot permit them to persist in their evil, for it violates all moral order. They have utterly corrupted their ways, so He is compelled to send them from the land, **for this is not the resting place.** He now returns to their saying, “Do not preach what they preach,” and says to them:

###### Malbim on Micah 2:11:1
[Malbim on Micah 2:11:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Micah/r/2:11:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
(11–12) **If a man walking after wind**—if I were to send you one of the false prophets, who would preach lies to you or speak according to the spirit of his erring imagination, telling you to indulge in wine and strong drink, **he would be the preacher for this people: “I will surely gather all of you, O Jacob,”** etc. This false prophet would proclaim in My name that I would gather Jacob and assemble them from the places of their dispersion—promises of good and consolation. He would prophesy to you that the assembled people of Jacob and Israel **I would place together like sheep in Bozrah.** That is, they would no longer bear the yoke of Torah and commandments, like sacred sheep, the sheep of Jerusalem, but would resemble the sheep in Bozrah, the capital of the kingdom of Edom. The “sheep” within it—meaning its people—are free from every Torah and commandment. He would tell you that you, too, would become like the nations, without Torah. If a prophet came and preached this to you, then **like a flock within its fold, they would resound with the multitude of people.** They would no longer hide in their houses as they did when fleeing from the true prophet who exhorted them to observe the commandments. Instead, they would all gather to hear his words, and the house of the preaching prophet would be filled with the clamor of people. Just as the fold where the sheep are gathered contains the entire flock, without a single sheep missing, so they would all be assembled there together, making a great commotion because of the multitude.

###### Malbim on Micah 2:13:1
[Malbim on Micah 2:13:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Micah/r/2:13:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**The breaker went up.** He says: Observe how imperfect their faith is, how they sway like a reed before the wind and waver between two opinions. This was evident at that time in the tribe of Judah. Whenever a king arose who breached the boundaries of religion and practiced idolatry, the entire people immediately followed him and imitated his deeds, as occurred in the days of Ahaz and Manasseh. But when a righteous king succeeded him—such as Hezekiah after Ahaz and Josiah after Manasseh—and began to serve Hashem, the people likewise followed and all served Hashem. This demonstrates that faith was not firmly rooted in their hearts; rather, they followed whoever led them, whether toward Hashem or toward Azazel. Thus, when **the breaker went up before them**—the king who breached the boundary, violated the religion, and demolished its walls—then **they broke through and passed on**: they too breached the boundaries of religion, transgressed the laws, and violated the statute. They also **broke through the gate and went out through it.** At first, they breached the boundaries like thieves slipping through a gap; afterward, that breach became for them a permanent gate through which they passed, until they departed from the religion entirely. But when **their king passed before them**—when a righteous king led them, ruling in fear of Hashem and worthy to reign upon the throne of David—then **Hashem was at their head**: they followed Hashem and walked after Him.
