## Malbim on Nehemiah Chapter 12

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And these:** The text lists the leaders who served at the time of Zerubbabel’s first return. You will see that everyone mentioned here also signed the covenant above in chapter 10, except that six additional names appear here after Shemaiah. Conversely, six names appear there that are absent here: Zedekiah, Pashhur, Malchijah, Daniel, Baruch, and Meshullam. These six arrived later and, because of their prominence, became heads of the priestly families, displacing the final six listed here. The number is twenty-two in both places, although there should have been twenty-four priestly watches. We must therefore say either that two of those listed also had sons who headed separate watches, or that two sons of Jeshua the High Priest—whom I did not include in the count—served as heads of watches.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And the Levites:** Of the Levites who signed the covenant above in chapter 10, only the first four are listed here, while only seventeen Levites signed there. It may be that together with the seven listed in chapter 11, verses 15–20, they comprised the twenty-four heads of the Levitical watches. Alternatively, the five added here beginning with Judah complete a total of twenty-two, corresponding to the number of priestly leaders. The phrase **“their brethren opposite them”** then refers to Bakbakkiah’s two brethren, Heresh and Galal, who are counted in Chronicles, bringing the total to twenty-four. **Al-Hayyadot:** In my opinion, this is a proper name; one individual was named Al-Hayyadot. This also appears from the fact that the name Mattaniah is followed by an *etnaḥta*, separating it from the following words.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And Jeshua fathered Joiakim:** All the commentators have found this verse extremely difficult. The Sages stated (Seder Olam, chapter 30; Avodah Zarah 9a) that Persian rule during the Second Temple period lasted thirty-four years—that is, thirty-four years elapsed from the Temple’s construction until the days of Alexander the Great. They also said that Simon the Righteous went out to meet Alexander when he returned from his war with Darius. Simon the Righteous would therefore have belonged to only the second generation after Ezra and Nehemiah, as Maimonides states in his introduction to the Order of Zeraim and as many great authorities have written. How, then, could six generations have been born within such a brief period, especially according to Rashi, who writes that all those listed here served as High Priests? Although the genealogical work says that its authors possessed a tradition that Jaddua was the father of Simon the Righteous, and we do not know the source of that tradition, I nevertheless do not understand the commotion over this difficulty. Who says that all these generations were born during those thirty-four years? Suppose Jeshua son of Jehozadak, who returned from the Babylonian exile and built the Temple, was then 105 years old, and that he and his descendants each fathered a son at the age of fifteen. Simon the Righteous would already have been born when Jeshua was ninety; consequently, when Jeshua built the Temple at the age of 105, Simon would have been fifteen, and by Alexander’s time he would have been forty-five. Even if Jeshua was only ninety when the Temple was built, Simon the Righteous would have been thirty by Alexander’s reign. What, then, is the great difficulty? It is clear from chapter 3 above that when the wall was completed, Eliashib was already called the High Priest. After the Temple was built, Jeshua died and Joiakim was appointed in his place; Joiakim, who was likewise already old, then died and Eliashib was appointed. It is possible that Eliashib and his descendants lived for many years and that, after his death, Simon the Righteous was chosen because he was more worthy than his forefathers. Alternatively, one or two of the intervening descendants may have served as High Priest during that period, or they may all have served only temporarily when the High Priest became ritually impure or under similar circumstances. We therefore need not resort to the strained claim that a later scribe added these words to Nehemiah. Nehemiah, who lived in the days of Jeshua and Joiakim, could already have seen all the later generations, since they had already been born in his lifetime. The same answer can be given concerning the nine generations of Jeconiah’s descendants listed in Chronicles, as will be explained in its proper place.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And in the days of Joiakim:** Other heads of the ancestral houses were appointed. Hattush is not included in the list, nor is anyone identified as having replaced Miniamin. It may be that both were still alive and continued serving as heads of their ancestral houses in Joiakim’s time. There is, however, an apparent difficulty. From the statement in chapter 3, “Eliashib the High Priest arose … and they built the Sheep Gate,” it appears that Eliashib was already High Priest when the wall was being rebuilt. How, then, when they made the covenant to observe the Torah in chapter 10, which occurred afterward, could all the former heads of the ancestral houses still have signed it? I offer one of two answers. Either, as explained above, this entire event occurred earlier, at the beginning of their first return in the days of Cyrus; or those men ceased serving as heads of their ancestral houses not because they had died, but because of their advanced age. Nevertheless, they remained more senior and honored than their successors and therefore participated as signatories.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**The Levites in the days of Eliashib:** This means that in Joiakim’s days, the heads of the priestly ancestral houses changed, but those of the Levites did not. Most of the Levites had not returned in Zerubbabel’s time but had arrived only recently, in Ezra’s time, and therefore still remained at their posts. Only in Eliashib’s days did the heads of the Levitical ancestral houses change. The priests who were subsequently replaced **in the days of Eliashib, Joiada, Johanan**—who is Jonathan—**and Jaddua are recorded as heads of ancestral houses** elsewhere. **Likewise, the priests** who were replaced **throughout the reign of Darius the Persian** are recorded—that is, all the leaders who changed during Darius’s reign. Darius’s period extended from Eliashib’s time until Jaddua’s, for by the beginning of Greek rule Simon the Righteous was already serving, as explained above. The text will now explain where these names were recorded.

**The descendants of Levi:** This refers to both the priests and the Levites, all of whom were descendants of Levi. Their **heads of ancestral houses were recorded in the Book of Chronicles.** They possessed a chronicle in which they recorded everything that occurred during that period, including the heads of the ancestral houses of Levi, through **the days of Johanan son of Eliashib.** This was Jonathan, Eliashib’s grandson. The verse does not say “through the days of Jaddua,” because Jaddua and Johanan served as High Priests during the same period, as explained above.

**And the heads of the Levites:** This phrase continues into the following verse, which says, “These served in the days of Joiakim.” In the days of Joiakim, Nehemiah, and Ezra—all of whom lived during the same period—the **heads of the Levites were Hashabiah, Sherebiah, and Jeshua.** These were among those who had returned with Zerubbabel, as listed in verses 8–9: Sherebiah, Jeshua, Mattaniah, and Bakbakkiah. They are likewise listed in chapters 10 and 11. This accords with what was stated in verse 22, that the Levitical leadership did not change in Joiakim’s time. Hashabiah, Sherebiah, and the others were appointed **to offer praise and thanksgiving** and supervised the singers and choir leaders. **Mattaniah, Bakbakkiah, Obadiah,** and the others were **gatekeepers who kept watch at the thresholds of the gates**—that is, they guarded the entrances, as stated in 11:17–19.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Upon the wall:** This may mean that they walked literally on top of the wall, or it may mean beside the wall, just as “and beside him was the tribe of Manasseh.” The Ritva discusses this question in his commentary on the first chapter of Shevuot and seeks to prove that they walked on top of the wall in order to consecrate its windows and its thickness, according to the opinion that the thickness of the wall is considered part of the city’s interior. **And I stationed two great thanksgiving offerings:** The Sages received a tradition that these were actual thanksgiving offerings and that consecrating the city required circling it with the loaves of a thanksgiving offering. “Great” refers to the large loaves—the leavened loaves, each of which was made from one-tenth of an ephah, whereas each unleavened loaf was made from one-third of a tenth of an ephah. They also received a tradition that the two thanksgiving offerings proceeded either side by side or one behind the other, and that one was eaten while the other was burned. At first sight, however, the plain meaning of the verse appears to contradict this tradition, for Scripture indicates that half the people proceeded from left to right while the other half proceeded from right to left. I have already explained this thoroughly above in chapter 3. Nehemiah’s residence was at the Valley Gate, in the center of the western wall, and the processions began there. The half that turned to the right proceeded toward the Dung Gate, continued to the stairs of the City of David and the southwestern extremity, and from there followed the entire southern wall from west to east until reaching the Water Gate at the southeastern side, as described in verses 31–37 and above in 3:13–26. Those who proceeded from right to left went from the Valley Gate to the Tower of the Ovens on the northwestern side, as stated above in 3:12. From there, they traveled west to east along the northern wall, passing the Broad Wall and the Ephraim Gate until they reached the Old Gate at the northeastern corner, as described there in verses 6–8. They then proceeded southward along the eastern side and stopped at the Sheep Gate, in the center of the eastern wall, as described there in verses 1–6. Those who had turned to the right approached them from the south, and the two groups met on the eastern side at the Guard Gate. This is required by the plain meaning of the verses and cannot be interpreted otherwise; the Sages likewise understood the verses in this manner. The truth is that they divided the loaves of the two thanksgiving offerings, each of which contained ten loaves. They took five loaves from each offering and carried them in the procession that circled to the right, along the southern side; they likewise took five loaves from each offering and carried them in the procession circling along the northern side. Thus, both sides were encircled with loaves from both thanksgiving offerings. This is required by the statement, “Hoshaiah went behind *them*.” If only one thanksgiving offering had proceeded in each direction, the verse should have said, “He went behind *it*.” The plural confirms the Sages’ teaching that both thanksgiving offerings proceeded on the right-hand route as well. We can therefore explain the verses as follows: Nehemiah says that **he brought up the officials of Judah**—all the officials together—**and stationed them with the two thanksgiving offerings.** At the place where they ascended by the Valley Gate stood the two great thanksgiving offerings, meaning the ten leavened loaves from each offering. They were then divided **into two processions:** five loaves from each offering proceeded to the right, from north to south. **Hoshaiah went behind them**—behind the portions of both thanksgiving offerings that proceeded to the right—together with half the officials of Judah. At that point, the officials divided, half proceeding to the right. Azariah, Ezra, and the others went with them, together with some of the priestly families, while Ezra the Scribe went before them—that is, before the priests. They continued in this manner until reaching the Water Gate on the eastern side, near the Guard Gate.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And the thanksgiving offering:** This still refers to the procession that went toward the right. According to the opinion that the two thanksgiving offerings proceeded side by side, the verse calls it **“the second thanksgiving offering that proceeded opposite”** the first—that is, beside it—and Nehemiah walked alone behind this offering. According to the opinion that the offerings proceeded one behind the other, the word **“opposite”** refers to the offering that followed behind the first. As stated in the Jerusalem Talmud (Sanhedrin 1:3), one Sage understood “he sits opposite him” to mean beside him, while the other inferred from “he shall pinch off its head opposite its nape” that “opposite” can mean behind. According to this interpretation, Nehemiah walked immediately behind the final thanksgiving offering, with the officials following him; Ezra then followed, with the priests behind him. The text now describes the portions of the two thanksgiving offerings that proceeded toward the left. Thus it says, “and half the people walked upon the wall, above the Tower of the Ovens,” and **they stopped at the Guard Gate.**

Now, however, **the portions**—that is, the gifts prescribed by **the Torah for the priests** and also **for the Levites**—would be brought into the storehouses. **For Judah rejoiced greatly over the priests and Levites who stood** at their service. They **kept the charge of their God and the charge of purification,** as the Torah says, “They shall keep your charge and the charge of the Tent.” These included **the singers and the gatekeepers.** Although their particular organization was not prescribed by the Torah, **David and Solomon** had established it. The people therefore recognized that the Levites actively performing the Temple service should take precedence over the other Levites. Consequently, they appointed officials so that the tithe too would be brought into the chambers and distributed among the Levites serving in the House of God.

**For in the days of David:** At that time, it was established who would serve as singers. Asaph and his descendants had held this role from early times and consistently served as the leaders of the singers. The songs and melodies were also instituted then, including songs of praise and songs of thanksgiving.

**And all Israel:** Until then, although they provided portions for the gatekeepers, they gave the tithes directly to the Levites. Each Levite collected his tithe in the fields and then separated the tithe of the tithe for the descendants of Aaron. They now enacted that the tithes should no longer be given to Levites who went around collecting them at the threshing floors; instead, they were to be brought to the appointed officials, who would distribute them among the Levites serving in the House of God.
