## Malbim on Nehemiah Chapter 5

###### Malbim on Nehemiah 5:1:1
[Malbim on Nehemiah 5:1:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Nehemiah/r/5:1:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And there was:** The outcry of the poor among the people against the wealthy was great. The verse explains that those who cried out comprised two groups. The first group complained about the future, because they had no means of sustaining themselves; their complaints were divided into two kinds.

###### Malbim on Nehemiah 5:2:1
[Malbim on Nehemiah 5:2:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Nehemiah/r/5:2:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Some said, “We are pledging our sons and daughters at interest”:** That is, we will be compelled to pledge our sons and daughters as security and borrow money against them at interest, so that **we may obtain grain and live.** These were people who owned no fields and had no means of sustaining themselves. [The word ***rabbim*** is a verb derived from the term for interest or increase, as in “Woe to him who increases what is not his” (Habakkuk 2:6), and, according to my interpretation, “You did not gain an increase from their price” (Psalms 44:13).]

###### Malbim on Nehemiah 5:3:1
[Malbim on Nehemiah 5:3:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Nehemiah/r/5:3:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And there were others** who owned fields and vineyards. They said, **“We are pledging our fields”**—that is, we have been compelled to provide our fields as security, namely, as collateral—**so that we may obtain grain during the famine.** Although a field’s produce ordinarily provides bread for the one who sows it, now it was a time of famine and the land had not yielded its produce. They were therefore compelled to pledge their fields in order to obtain food. [Here the verse does not say, “We are borrowing at interest,” because they would not have to pay interest: the lender would consume the field’s produce and thereby receive compensation for allowing them continued use of the money.]

###### Malbim on Nehemiah 5:4:1
[Malbim on Nehemiah 5:4:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Nehemiah/r/5:4:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And there were others:** The second group complained about what had already occurred. They said, **“We borrowed money”** during the previous year, even though it was not a year of famine, because we were required **to pay the king’s tax**—the word *middah* denotes taxation, as in “tribute, tax, and toll”—**and we pledged our fields and vineyards** during that year. [The verb “we are pledging” from the preceding verse applies here as well.]

###### Malbim on Nehemiah 5:5:1
[Malbim on Nehemiah 5:5:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Nehemiah/r/5:5:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And now,** when money is needed to buy bread because it is a year of famine, surely **our flesh is like the flesh of our brothers,** and we too deserve to eat bread; **our children are like their children,** and it is fitting that ours should likewise not become slaves. Yet **we are subjecting our sons**—that is, we will be compelled to sell them as slaves in exchange for bread—and **some of our daughters have already been subjected as maidservants.** The word “subjected” also implies that they are treated as though they were without protection and may be abused, as in, “Will he even assault the queen?” **And it is not within our power** to redeem them, because **our fields and vineyards have belonged to others** since the previous year.

###### Malbim on Nehemiah 5:6:1
[Malbim on Nehemiah 5:6:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Nehemiah/r/5:6:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And I became angry:** First, he was angered by the outcry of the poor in the first group, who complained that charity was being withheld from them; and second, by **these matters**—the outcry of the second group, who complained of oppression and injustice.

###### Malbim on Nehemiah 5:7:1
[Malbim on Nehemiah 5:7:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Nehemiah/r/5:7:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And my heart took counsel within me:** My heart clothed itself with a spirit of kingship and authority, so that I would show no favoritism toward the nobles and officials. [Alternatively, he did not quarrel with them out of anger, for his heart—the governing faculty of the soul, as I explained in my commentary on Proverbs—ruled over him, and he restrained his anger. Nevertheless, he contended with them, not through an emotional outburst of anger but from an awakened sense of justice and righteousness.] **“Are you acting as creditors, each man toward his brother?”** How can one become a creditor who presses his own brother? Is it not written, “If you lend money to My people, you shall not behave toward him as a creditor; you shall not impose interest upon him”? He thereby reminded them of the Torah’s commandments concerning pressing a debtor, charging interest, and returning collateral. **And I convened against them:** Through his dispute with them, a large gathering of people assembled.

###### Malbim on Nehemiah 5:8:1
[Malbim on Nehemiah 5:8:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Nehemiah/r/5:8:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**We have purchased:** We have redeemed our Jewish brothers from captivity, buying back **our brothers who had been sold to the nations, to the extent of our means.** There are already many among us whom we have redeemed from slavery. How, then, can you sell your brothers to the nations, forcing us to redeem them as well, so that they will be sold back to us by the nations? Is this to be the result of your actions?

###### Malbim on Nehemiah 5:9:1
[Malbim on Nehemiah 5:9:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Nehemiah/r/5:9:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And I said, “It is not good”:** Apart from being contrary to the Torah and to justice, it is also **not good** for you yourselves. **Should you not walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the nations, our enemies?** Even if you do not fear God and are not scrupulous in observing the Torah’s commandments, you must at least appear to walk and conduct yourselves in the fear of God, so that the nations will not disgrace you by saying that you have neither faith nor religion and that you despise God, thereby subjecting you to reproach.

###### Malbim on Nehemiah 5:10:1
[Malbim on Nehemiah 5:10:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Nehemiah/r/5:10:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And also:** Do not say that I rebuke you only because I will suffer no loss, since I have not lent them anything. Therefore, he said, **“I too, along with my brothers and my servants, have lent them money.”** Nevertheless, **let us now relinquish this debt** and forgive what they owe us. Therefore—

###### Malbim on Nehemiah 5:11:1
[Malbim on Nehemiah 5:11:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Nehemiah/r/5:11:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Restore them to them:** You too must return their property. **This very day:** Since this is a year of famine and they are occupied with rebuilding the wall, they have become impoverished and hungry. **And the hundred of silver:** That is, forgive the loan itself, even if it amounts to one hundred pieces of silver.

###### Malbim on Nehemiah 5:12:1
[Malbim on Nehemiah 5:12:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Nehemiah/r/5:12:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And I summoned the priests:** He had the priests administer the oath to them, making it more solemn, as it is written, “The priest shall adjure the woman with the oath of the curse.”

###### Malbim on Nehemiah 5:13:1
[Malbim on Nehemiah 5:13:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Nehemiah/r/5:13:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**I also shook out the fold of my garment:** He shook the corner of his garment—the pocket formed by the garment. [The verse “They shall bring your sons in their bosom” may likewise mean “in their pocket”; figuratively, it says that they will carry them as one carries gold and silver in a pocket.] **“So may he be shaken out, and so may he remain emptied”:** Just as I have shaken out the fold of my garment, so may God shake such a person out of his house—that is, may his house be destroyed and all the fruits of his labor perish. And just as the pocket now remains empty, so may he remain emptied, never again attaining success, even through natural means. **And they praised Hashem and acted accordingly:** They did it joyfully, as one fulfills a commandment and first recites the blessing over the commandment. Here they fulfilled the commandments of charity and returning collateral. Many great authorities have already debated whether one should recite a blessing when fulfilling commandments of this kind.

###### Malbim on Nehemiah 5:14:1
[Malbim on Nehemiah 5:14:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Nehemiah/r/5:14:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Also:** That is, not only did he benefit the poor, but he also did not impose a burden upon the wealthy; therefore, they listened to him. **Their governors:** The letter *mem* marks the plural—“their governor.”

###### Malbim on Nehemiah 5:15:1
[Malbim on Nehemiah 5:15:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Nehemiah/r/5:15:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**But the former governors burdened the people:** They burdened them with the expenses of their provisions, while the governors who came before me went further and collected taxes from them. He explains that the earlier governors, who did not collect a monetary tax, burdened the people by taking bread and wine, whereas those who followed took money from them. **Afterward, forty shekels of silver:** That is, another governor took a tax of forty shekels of silver. Alternatively, it means that afterward the governors began taking money.

###### Malbim on Nehemiah 5:16:1
[Malbim on Nehemiah 5:16:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Nehemiah/r/5:16:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Moreover:** I devoted myself to and assisted in rebuilding the wall. Consequently, **we acquired no field, for all my servants were assembled there for the work,** and no one was available to perform the agricultural labor. Thus, I had no income at all.

###### Malbim on Nehemiah 5:17:1
[Malbim on Nehemiah 5:17:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Nehemiah/r/5:17:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And the Jews:** His expenses were considerable because of all those who ate at his table, to the extent that one ox and so forth had to be prepared each day. **And between every ten days:** Nehemiah “tithed” his days—every tenth day he fasted and drank no wine. Only during the intervening days, when he was not fasting, was **every kind of wine supplied in abundance**—that is, many different wines, all in plentiful quantities. Nevertheless, although he incurred great expenses without any income, **I did not demand the governor’s food allowance.**

###### Malbim on Nehemiah 5:19:1
[Malbim on Nehemiah 5:19:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Nehemiah/r/5:19:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Remember** … **concerning this people:** The word “concerning” has the sense of “for this people.” Alternatively, Nehemiah means that God should remember this merit not for his own sake, but so that God would apply the merit to this people, for the merit of the righteous protects the people.
