**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Until that time:** Until then, they still hoped that they might succeed in stopping the work; afterward, however, they lost their confidence, as stated in verse 16.

**In Kephirim:** This is the name of a place. We likewise find a city named Chephirah in the territory of Benjamin (Joshua 18:26).

**In this manner:** He also sent an oral message through his servant that they should meet in Kephirim, while the servant carried a letter indicating that the matter was urgent.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**The questions:**
**(6–7)** How could he attempt to frighten Nehemiah with the false accusations that he intended to become king and had appointed prophets to proclaim him king in Judah? Would Nehemiah be afraid of fabricated charges? And the expression **“according to these reports”** appears to make no sense.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**“It is reported among the nations, and Geshem says”:** That is, Geshem the Arab says—and it is likewise rumored among the nations—that you are rebuilding the wall because you intend to rebel. The statement **“and you are becoming their king”** consists of Sanballat’s own words. He means: although the rumor circulating among the nations has no real substance—for people see you building a wall with gates and bars and merely infer that you intend to rebel—nevertheless, Geshem the Arab had already made this accusation when they first sought to build, saying, “Are you rebelling against the king?” (above, 2:19). Nehemiah paid no attention to his words then, and certainly had no reason to do so now, since he was acting with the king’s authorization. Sanballat therefore added: **“And you are becoming their king—[this] confirms these reports.”** The word “says” at the beginning of the verse applies to both clauses. Your becoming king—something you are doing without the king’s authorization, since he appointed you only as governor and did not authorize you to assume the title of king—confirms and substantiates the reports that you intend to rebel against the king and built the wall for that purpose. He then explains the claim that “you are becoming their king”: **“You have also appointed prophets.”** As will be explained in verse 12, Tobiah and Sanballat had hired Shemaiah, a false prophet, to prophesy that there would be a king in Jerusalem and that Nehemiah would be that king. He prophesied to Nehemiah that he would reign. [This prophecy by itself would not imply rebellion, because it might be fulfilled with the Persian king’s permission, by his appointing Nehemiah as king, just as many kings ruled under the authority of the Persian monarchs.] They hired the prophets so that, when necessary, they could claim that Nehemiah himself had hired them to deliver this prophecy, which would constitute rebellion. On this basis, Sanballat presented apparent proof that Nehemiah intended to rebel: You have appointed and hired prophets to proclaim that you will be king in Judah. [It was true that the false prophets had prophesied this, though they had actually been hired by Judah’s enemies.] **“And now it will be reported to the king”**—this will cause even your rebuilding of the wall to be regarded as an act of rebellion. **“Therefore, come, and let us take counsel together”** about how you can save yourself.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**The questions:**
**(8–9)** Why did Nehemiah need to send him a response saying that he had invented these accusations, when they were plainly false? What is the meaning of **“for they all sought to frighten us,”** and what does this add to the account?

###### Malbim on Nehemiah 6:8:2
[Malbim on Nehemiah 6:8:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Nehemiah/r/6:8:2)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And I sent:** He replied that this claim—that I appointed prophets—**never happened, for you are inventing it out of your own heart.** Your invitation that I should consult with you, as though you were my friends seeking to strengthen my hand, is likewise false. **For** until now, **all of them**—that is, all of Judah’s enemies, including you—**have sought to frighten us, saying, “Their hands will become weak in the work.”** How, then, have you suddenly changed from an enemy into a friend who wishes **to strengthen my hand?**

###### Malbim on Nehemiah 6:10:1
[Malbim on Nehemiah 6:10:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Nehemiah/r/6:10:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**The questions:**
**(10–13)** If Shemaiah said this in God’s name, how did Nehemiah recognize that God had not sent him? Moreover, the text does not mention that he presented his words as a prophecy; had he done so, it should have said, “Thus says Hashem: Hide yourself within the Temple.” What is the meaning of the expression **“for he spoke the prophecy”**? It should have said, “He spoke prophetically.” And what is the meaning of the phrase **“because he was hired,”** which appears entirely incomprehensible?

###### Malbim on Nehemiah 6:10:2
[Malbim on Nehemiah 6:10:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Nehemiah/r/6:10:2)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And I came to the house of Shemaiah:** Nehemiah had resolved to investigate the prophecy that Shemaiah had pronounced concerning him—that he would become king in Judah—and therefore went to Shemaiah’s house. [For **he was confined** by illness and could not be summoned to Nehemiah.] Nehemiah went to investigate and inquire into the matter. **And he said, “Let us meet in the House of God”:** Shemaiah did not say this as a prophecy. Rather, he told Nehemiah that he had learned through informants that Judah’s enemies were coming to kill him and intended to murder him that very night. He therefore advised Nehemiah to accompany him into the Sanctuary and remain locked inside throughout the night, because the Sanctuary’s doors were closed, whereas the city’s gates were open.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And I said to him:** He replied that he would not do this for two reasons. First, it would make him appear fearful and fainthearted, which was unbecoming a man of his position. Thus he said, **“Should a man such as I flee?”** Second, **“Who such as I could enter the Sanctuary and live?”** After all, I am not a priest, and a non-priest may not approach the sacred place.

###### Malbim on Nehemiah 6:12:1
[Malbim on Nehemiah 6:12:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Nehemiah/r/6:12:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And I recognized:** From this I recognized **that God had not sent him**—that is, that he was a false prophet—**for he was the one who had spoken the prophecy concerning me,** namely, the prophecy mentioned above that I would become king over Israel. Until then, I had been uncertain whether it might be a true prophecy; now, however, I recognized that God had not sent him, but that **Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.** They had hired him both to prophesy that Nehemiah would become king over Israel and to advise him to enter the Sanctuary. [Nehemiah now recognized this because Shemaiah’s present advice contradicted his earlier prophecy. If God had truly declared that Nehemiah would become king over Israel, how could his enemies kill him, forcing him to hide from them in the Sanctuary? On the contrary, Shemaiah should have told him, “Do not fear, for the word of God will not return unfulfilled, and you will surely reign.” From this contradiction, Nehemiah recognized that God had not sent him; rather, Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him for each of these two acts.]

###### Malbim on Nehemiah 6:13:1
[Malbim on Nehemiah 6:13:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Nehemiah/r/6:13:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**In order that:** The verse explains why they hired Shemaiah to prophesy that Nehemiah would reign over Israel. This is the meaning of **“in order that he might appear to have been hired”**: they intended to accuse Nehemiah by claiming that Shemaiah had been hired by him to utter this prophecy, as Sanballat had alleged, “You have also appointed prophets to proclaim concerning you, ‘There is a king.’” Why, then, did they hire him to advise Nehemiah to flee into the Sanctuary? **“In order that I would become afraid and act accordingly.”** They would thereby gain two advantages: first, **“and I would sin”** and be punished for this transgression; second, **“and they would have grounds for an evil report, in order”** to reproach me for having desecrated God’s Sanctuary.

###### Malbim on Nehemiah 6:14:1
[Malbim on Nehemiah 6:14:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Nehemiah/r/6:14:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Remember, O my God, Tobiah according to these deeds of his:** That is, for hiring false prophets against Nehemiah. **And also Noadiah the prophetess:** This refers to Shemaiah and Noadiah, both of whom were hired to prophesy that Nehemiah would become king, as well as to the other prophets who were hired to cast terror and fear upon him.

**And they lost their confidence:** For they knew **that this work had been accomplished by our God.** They saw that it had succeeded through Divine Providence; therefore, it was completed in so few days, and they had been unable to stop the work.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**The questions:**
**(17)** How is the statement **“Moreover, in those days”** connected with the preceding statement that their enemies had lost their confidence?

###### Malbim on Nehemiah 6:17:2
[Malbim on Nehemiah 6:17:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Nehemiah/r/6:17:2)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Moreover, in those days:** This introduces what Nehemiah relates in the following chapter: that he appointed his brother over the walls of Jerusalem and ordered the city to remain guarded even afterward. Although the fear of God had fallen upon the surrounding nations, he still faced stumbling blocks among the Israelites themselves, **who exchanged letters with Tobiah,** for they were allied with him for two reasons. First, **he was related by marriage to Shecaniah and Meshullam,** who were prominent and honored officials. Second, **they spoke favorably of him** and regarded him as a good and upright man. Consequently, they also conveyed Nehemiah’s words and secrets to Tobiah, who thus had spies among the Israelites. **He also sent letters to frighten me.** Nehemiah therefore remained on guard against him and ordered increased vigilance even after the wall had been built, although he no longer feared the surrounding nations.
