## Malbim on Proverbs Chapter 23

###### Malbim on Proverbs 23:1:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 23:1:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/23:1:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**When you sit to dine with a ruler.** When you sit to eat bread with a ruler: first, **understand who is before you**, and do not forget that you are sitting with a ruler, for during a meal a person may forget the ruler's awe and honor and thereby forfeit his life.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 23:2:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 23:2:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/23:2:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And put...** Second, it commands him not to eat excessively. If you are **a man of appetite** and desire, then **put a knife to your throat** to restrain yourself from eating too much.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 23:3:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 23:3:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/23:3:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Do not...** Regarding the delicacies themselves, **do not desire his delicacies**. It explains the reason: **they are deceptive food**. The ruler does not give them for your sake—to benefit or sustain you, or to honor you—but for his own benefit. They are not true food, but preparation for what he will impose upon you and request from you. All this is a parable for the ruler within man: his desiring inclination and aroused faculty, which rules the body and which Ecclesiastes calls “an old and foolish king.” It invites the true man—his intellectual powers—to eat its bread. He must know who sits before him and guard against its enticement: he must neither broaden his appetitive soul so that it breaches its boundary nor desire abundant delicacies beyond the necessary food, for it is deceptive bread. It is not the food appointed for the soul and for man as man, but for his animal aspect.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 23:4:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 23:4:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/23:4:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Do not weary yourself to become rich.** After commanding him not to be drawn after the appetitive faculty in eating and indulgence, it commands him not to be drawn after accumulating wealth, through which he will abandon contemplation of Torah. Thus, **do not weary yourself to become rich**, for thereby **you will cease from your understanding**. Not everyone who increases commerce becomes wise, and the Torah is not across the sea, as the Sages said. The next verse explains.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 23:5:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 23:5:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/23:5:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Will you cause your eyes to fly toward it, and it is gone?** Regarding your understanding, you must not avert your eyes from it even for a moment. It resembles a winged bird in a person's hand: the moment he turns away, it flies upward. So too human intellect and understanding: if a person neglects them for a moment, they fly away, for they are not aroused by themselves but only through great diligence and effort. Thus, **if you cause your eyes to fly**—closing the eyelid over the eye—your understanding **is gone, for it makes wings for itself** and flies away from you. The Sages likewise interpreted: “A bird means only Torah, as it says, ‘Will you cause your eyes to fly toward it, and it is gone?’”

###### Malbim on Proverbs 23:6:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 23:6:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/23:6:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Do not eat...** This too is presented as a parable: do not eat the bread of one with an evil eye, and **do not desire his delicacies**.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 23:7:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 23:7:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/23:7:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**For as corruption is in his soul, so is he.** Natural philosophers have explained that harmful sparks issue from an evil eye, rooted in the degraded soul of the person who looks with an evil eye, and they are like sparks of death upon the object observed. They also related that a person with an evil eye gazed steadily at a loaf of bread, and death and destruction were found within it. Thus it says that **the corruption**—the defective and repulsive quality **within his inner soul**—enters the bread as well; the bread receives that corruption and becomes spoiled bread. **He says to you, “Eat and drink,”** making it appear that he has not placed an evil eye upon it, but **his heart is not with you**. The food will harm you until **you vomit even the morsel you ate**. By concluding, **and you will have wasted your pleasant words**, the verse reveals that it speaks metaphorically of spiritual bread—the study of intellectual truths. One must take care not to eat the bread of the intellect from one with an evil eye. A good or evil “eye” applies to all judgments of the intellect that judge favorably or unfavorably: one with a good eye judges for good, while one with an evil eye judges for evil. Vision corresponds to the faculty of intellect, through which one apprehends matters beyond the power of understanding, including the laws of wisdom—which cannot be understood by the faculty of understanding—and all higher apprehensions concerning the hidden secret of Hashem, concealed from every creature and exalted beyond the path of their understanding. Scripture does not use “understanding” for these, but “intellect,” as in “to comprehend Your truth.” In matters of understanding, all people agree: everyone who understands grasps them in the same way, and one who disagrees does not understand and imagines vanity and falsehood. But matters beyond human understanding, such as the ways and practices of wisdom and higher knowledge, are apprehensions of intellect and may be approached by many paths. Each person apprehends according to what he is: the wise person by the path of wisdom and the fool by the path of folly. One with a good eye judges according to wisdom, which is inherently good, while one with an evil eye judges according to folly—for example, that one should not give his bread to the poor. The verse therefore commands not to eat the bread of one with an evil eye, for the study of wisdom is compared to eating bread and drinking water, as it says, “Ho, everyone who thirsts, go to the water.” The corruption in his soul—his heart being filled with evil images and sinful schemes—enters his bread. Although he says, “Eat and drink,” and appears to teach you words of wisdom, his heart, the ruling faculty, is not with you, for he does not rule his spirit and subdue his appetites. Ultimately you will even vomit the morsel you had already eaten—the words of wisdom you previously received—and you will ruin your pleasant words.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 23:9:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 23:9:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/23:9:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Do not speak in the ears of a fool, for he will despise the intellect of your words.** It has already been explained that a fool differs from an ignoramus. The ignoramus doubts the laws of wisdom, whereas the fool may know them but depart from them because of his appetite. If the laws of wisdom could be demonstrated to the ignoramus by proof, he would return from his ignorance. Not so the fool: he flees wisdom despite knowing its value, because it restrains his appetite. The laws of wisdom cannot be demonstrated by proofs of understanding, but they can be apprehended through intellect, an acute faculty that extends even to matters of wisdom. One who possesses intellect can speak in the ears of the ignoramus, for if he can bring him to apprehension, he will return from his ignorance. But this does not help the fool, as it says, “Go away from a foolish man, for you will not know lips of knowledge,” as I explained there. Therefore, **do not speak in the ears of a fool**, for he will even **despise the intellect of your words**, since he does not desire wisdom or intellectual apprehension.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 23:10:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 23:10:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/23:10:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Do not move an ancient boundary.** It already said above (22:28), “Do not move an ancient boundary,” and we explained it there. From the context here we learn that it speaks of the boundary belonging to the poor. The Sifra on Kedoshim likewise explains that it refers to one who steals the gleanings, forgotten sheaves, and corner of the field. We explained there that the concept of a boundary seems opposed to that of the world: a boundary belongs to each individual and is not a single boundary for the entire world. Yet there is a boundary designated for the whole world—the portion set aside universally for the poor to gather their gifts. It commands that this boundary not be moved, and likewise that one **not enter the fields of orphans**. Do not say that their power is too weak to contend with you in court, for the next verse says:

###### Malbim on Proverbs 23:11:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 23:11:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/23:11:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**For their Redeemer is strong.** Their fields have a Redeemer—the term denoting the close relative who possesses the right of redemption—and **this Redeemer is strong**. Moreover, **He will plead their cause against you**, and you will certainly be punished.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 23:12:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 23:12:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/23:12:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Bring your heart to discipline and your ears to words of knowledge.** Even if a person has heard and accepted the laws of wisdom from his teachers, it is not certain that he will follow them. Images of appetite contradict and battle the laws of wisdom, and the heart—the ruling faculty in the body—wages an internal war: at times images of wisdom rule it, and at times images of appetite, especially because the reasons for the laws of wisdom are unknown. The Sage therefore advises him **to bring his ears to words of knowledge**: he should also receive words that knowledgeable people acquired through first principles and the senses—how they saw Hashem's Providence in His world, how He ordered the world with wisdom and repays the wicked according to his wickedness, that the body ultimately dies, and the like. Through this **he brings his heart to discipline**, fearing punishment and the awe and exaltedness of Hashem. This assists the heart in ruling according to the laws of wisdom and subduing appetite, as explained throughout.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 23:13:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 23:13:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/23:13:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Do not withhold discipline from a child.** Although a child cannot receive words of knowledge and cannot bring his heart to discipline through such words by fearing Hashem's punishment and exaltedness, nevertheless **do not withhold from him the discipline** appropriate **for a child**—discipline with the rod.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 23:13:2
[Malbim on Proverbs 23:13:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/23:13:2)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**For if you strike him with the rod, he will not die.** There is no danger in striking him; thus the act is unlikely to cause loss and likely to bring benefit, for:

###### Malbim on Proverbs 23:14:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 23:14:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/23:14:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**You will strike him with the rod and save his soul from the grave.** In this way you will save his soul from the grave, whereas otherwise he would suffer the death of the soul.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 23:15:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 23:15:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/23:15:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**My son.** It presents discipline that a father speaks to his son. **If your heart is wise**: it has already been explained that one “wise of heart” is a person in whose heart—the ruling faculty—the laws of wisdom are firmly fixed and rule all his powers, so that the images of appetite and the inclination no longer rise in rebellion, and the war within his spirit has quieted. If you reach this level and become wise of heart, then **my heart too will rejoice**. It already said that a wise son gladdens his father, but this is not yet rejoicing of the heart, which is complete inner joy, for the son might still fall away from the laws of wisdom. But if his heart itself is wise, so that his heart rejoices in his labor because he no longer has an internal war, his father's heart will likewise rejoice.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 23:16:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 23:16:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/23:16:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**My kidneys will exult when your lips speak upright things.** If you reach the still higher level of uprightness—knowing through understanding the laws of what is straight—you will no longer need the heart's battle at all, for uprightness will have become an acquisition within your heart. As we explained, an upright person is one whose nature inclines toward uprightness and who comprehends its laws through understanding until he knows them clearly and can **speak them with his lips** to others. As explained, the lips signify knowledge: because he knows uprightness with clear knowledge, he can speak and teach it to others. Then **my kidneys will exult**, a higher level than the heart's rejoicing. First, exultation is dancing from great joy, the outward expression of joy in action, just as the laws of uprightness have been revealed to our son in action so that he can teach others. Second, the kidneys are closer to action than the heart, as the Sages said: the heart thinks and the kidneys advise, and counsel follows thought.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 23:17:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 23:17:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/23:17:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Let your heart not envy sinners.** When the verb “envy” is followed by the preposition bet, it means envying another's advantage and desiring to be like him. He tells his son that even if he sees sinners prospering in this world, his heart should not envy them. Rather, **envy the fear of Hashem**: when he sees fear of Hashem, he should desire the deeds of those who fear Hashem, and this envy should dwell in his heart **all day**. The trait of envy is thus evil when directed toward sinners and good when directed toward fear of Hashem. One who is wise of heart does not suppress envy entirely, but rules it so that it operates only on its good side.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 23:18:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 23:18:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/23:18:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**For surely there is a future.** It explains why he should not envy the prosperity of sinners: they have no ultimate future, as it says, “The future of the wicked is cut off.” “Future” means the final purpose and eternal happiness, which comes only through fear of Hashem, whereby a person inherits eternal life. Sinners do not possess this. Moreover, **your hope** for matters of this world **will not be cut off**. This is the difference between hope and confident expectation: hope applies to something uncertain and not guaranteed, for success in this world is not promised to them.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 23:19:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 23:19:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/23:19:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Listen, you, my son.** Corresponding to “If your heart is wise, my heart will rejoice,” he says: **But you, my son**, whose heart is not yet wise and remains distant from wisdom—even when wisdom enters your heart, it will still battle appetite and the inclination, the opposite of being wise of heart—you must **listen** and accept the words of wisdom, and **become wise** by acquiring wisdom. You must **direct your heart on the way**. Since two roads lie before you, the road of wisdom and the road of folly, direct your ruling faculty along the road of lasting happiness. This distinguishes one who directs toward happiness from one who merely guides: the former travels on the road of eternal happiness.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 23:20:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 23:20:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/23:20:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Do not be...** Even if you have not yet reached the level of wisdom, guard yourself against the appetite for **gluttonous eating of meat and drunken drinking of wine**. The word “for themselves” may also be understood metaphorically: they consume their own flesh, as it says, “You will groan at your end, when your flesh and body are consumed.”

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**For the drunkard and glutton will become impoverished.** At least act according to benefit and harm, for **the drunkard and glutton will lose his possessions**, while **one who dozes** and does no work will be clothed by slumber in **torn garments**. In the metaphor as well, he will lose the wealth of wisdom and be naked of the garments of noble character traits and the clothing of intellect.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Listen to your father who begot you.** It commands him to hear and accept the laws of wisdom from his father and not doubt that tradition as though his father might bequeath him falsehood, since **he begot you**, and a father does not bequeath falsehood to his children. Likewise, when receiving modes of conduct from your mother, **do not despise her because your mother has aged**, imagining that these customs were good for the first generation but not the new one, or good for the old but not for youths in whom the heat of appetite burns.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
“Buy the truth.” Even if you must pay a high price for the truth, such as giving up your desires, childhood pleasures, and what your soul craves—give all this as the price for the truth. “And do not sell.” This means that you should not acquire it like a merchant who buys in order to sell for another price. In other words, you should not learn with the intention of gaining wealth or honor, as this is akin to “buying and selling,” where one receives a different price in return for their acquisition. Therefore, it says, “Buy the truth,” meaning that the essence of truth is to do it for its own sake. The verse clarifies: What should you acquire? What is truth? Wisdom, ethics, and understanding. It has already been explained that wisdom includes the moral laws and customs one must follow according to the Torah. All of these are received (i.e., based on tradition) and are not derived from human intellect. They often contradict one’s natural tendencies, as one’s desires conflict with the laws of wisdom. The soul cannot accept the laws of wisdom except through discipline (mussar), which is rooted in the fear of God—fearing the Lord who observes one and punishes wrongdoing, as He commanded the laws of wisdom. When one restrains their soul with the bonds of fear to not transgress His word, they will also acquire understanding (binah). Understanding refers to the ability to discern between truth and falsehood in matters dependent on intellectual reasoning. However, if one accepts the laws of wisdom along with discipline so that they are firmly established in their heart as truth—through believing in God, who established these laws and knows their reasoning—then one will be able to derive one matter from another and extract conclusions. This is achieved through acquiring truth, which is believing in the laws of wisdom as being true.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**The father of a righteous person will surely rejoice, and one who begets a wise son will be glad in him.** The righteous person differs from the wise person. The wise person has received the laws of wisdom and follows them. The righteous person is not necessarily wise; he has merely accustomed himself to act righteously, though he did not receive the laws of wisdom through study. Rejoicing differs from gladness: gladness is continuous, while rejoicing comes over something newly occurring, such as a discovery or good news. A “father” can include one who raises or teaches him, whereas “one who begets” means specifically his biological father. Righteous conduct does not depend upon birth but upon free choice, as the Sages said: an angel brings the drop before the Holy One, blessed is He, and asks what will become of it—wise or foolish and so forth—but does not ask whether it will be righteous or wicked. Therefore the begetter does not rejoice over a righteous son merely because he begot him. Rather, **the father of a righteous person**—the one who raised, taught, and trained him in righteous deeds—rejoices. Nor is his gladness necessarily constant, because the son may fall from his righteousness, having not received the laws of wisdom; instead the father rejoices anew each time he sees that the son still holds to righteousness. But **one who begets a wise son will be glad in him**. The formation of a wise person depends partly on birth, since he is naturally prepared for wisdom, and therefore the begetter is glad. It says “will be glad,” not “will rejoice,” because he is glad over the son's disposition and fine intellect, a constant gladness rather than one renewed each time.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Your father and mother will be glad, and she who bore you will rejoice.** He advises the son to conduct himself so that both those who raised him will be glad and those who begot him will rejoice. This occurs if he rules his spirit through wisdom and discipline until he becomes wise of heart—wisdom rules his heart and becomes second nature, so that neither images of appetite that turn him from wisdom nor the doubts and ignorance that question the laws of wisdom rule him. This is achieved by hearing discipline and consistently conducting himself according to wisdom. Then the father and mother who raised him will be glad, since through their guidance they accustomed him to this. His mother who bore him will also experience a new rejoicing beyond her initial gladness over his natural disposition: she will rejoice over the persistence of his free choice and ruling faculty, which is the meaning of rejoicing.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**My son, give me your heart.** It explains how this is achieved: **give me your heart**, meaning that the laws of wisdom should rule within it and doubts of heresy and denial should not rule there. The laws of wisdom should remain engraved and written upon his heart so that no contrary matter is found within it. **Let your eyes guard my ways.** The eyes signify appetites and evil images rooted in the senses, as the Sages explained: “Do not stray after your heart”—this is heresy—“and after your eyes”—this is immorality. The eyes should guard the ways of Hashem and not be moved by the desires of this world or the inclination's enticements.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**For a deep pit...** Corresponding to “Let your eyes guard my ways,” it says that **the harlot**, representing the appetitive inclination, resembles **a deep pit** from which one who is trapped has difficulty escaping. Corresponding to “My son, give me your heart,” it says that **the foreign woman**, representing heresy, resembles **a narrow well**: one who falls there immediately drowns in the raging waters and dies. So too one submerged in heresy dies the death of the soul and will not return to see the light of life.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**She too...** The harlot **lies in wait like a robber**, for she suddenly snatches one whose spirit of desire rises in his heart and captures him in her net. Had he paid attention, he would have guarded against her, but she seizes him suddenly. **The foreign woman**, representing heresy, **increases traitors among men**, for she presents arguments of heresy and denial to ensnare many into betraying Hashem.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Who has woe? Who has longing?** If you ask, “Who has woe?” I answer: the one who has longing—desire and craving. Whoever has craving has woe. If you ask, “Who has contentions?”—legal disputes and arguments—I answer: one who has babbling. “Babbling” means speech without intellect, merely blurting out one's imaginings; one who multiplies babbling multiplies contentions and quarrels. If you ask, “Who has wounds without cause?” I answer: one who has redness of eyes. If you ask who has red eyes, I answer in the next verse.

**Do not look upon wine when it is red, when it gives its eye in the cup and goes down smoothly.** Do not desire wine because you see its red color, which indicates that it is good wine and beneficial to the blood, the vital soul. At first it **gives its eye**—its color—**in the cup** into which it is poured, and then **goes down smoothly** as though it contains no evil. The metaphor is that the drinker, who is the cup into which the wine is placed, becomes red like the wine. At first the drinking is smooth and pleasant, but:
