## Malbim on Proverbs Chapter 26

###### Malbim on Proverbs 26:1:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 26:1:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/26:1:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Like snow in summer and rain at harvest.** Snow and rain both benefit seed and grain: snow makes the earth fruitful, and rain causes it to sprout, as stated in Isaiah 55. Nevertheless, they are not good in summer and harvest, when there is no seed. Rain harms the harvest, which precedes summer, by rotting the ripened grain; snow harms in summer, when the sun's heat is needed to dry the figs. If snow comes early in summer, though its proper time follows the rain after summer, or rain comes at harvest, though its time follows summer, their untimely arrival causes loss and destruction. **So honor is not fitting for a fool.** Honor given to a wise person, who has plowed and sown the Divine seed of wisdom in the portion of his soul, benefits him like rain and snow: it arouses his spiritual powers to bring all his potential into actuality. But honor given to a fool who has sown nothing causes destruction and corruption, for it strengthens him in his folly. It is out of place and destructive. See verse 8 below.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 26:2:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 26:2:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/26:2:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Like a bird wandering, like a swallow flying.** The bird nests even in a house, yet naturally wanders from place to place and does not remain permanently. The free swallow accepts no authority and is not found in a house at all, only in a nest, as it says, “Even the bird has found a house, and the swallow a nest for herself”; it flies far outside the house. Likewise, **an undeserved curse will not come**. According to the written form, not only will it fail to remain permanently and will wander like a bird, it will not enter the house even temporarily, like a swallow flying away. According to the reading with vav, **it will come to him**—it returns to the one who curses, like the bird and swallow that return to their own nests after wandering and flying.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 26:3:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 26:3:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/26:3:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**A whip for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, and a rod for the back of fools.** Unreasoning animals, lacking intelligence to guide themselves, require a whip or bridle. A horse needs a whip; a donkey, still more foolish and not understanding even through a whip, needs a bridle to restrain it from leaving the road. Man possesses intelligence and choice and should follow the good path independently. But a fool, who departs from wisdom because of appetite, resembles an animal guided by nature rather than intellect and likewise requires a rod; through punishment and suffering he is compelled to follow the paved road.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 26:4:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 26:4:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/26:4:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you too become like him.** A fool does not observe the laws of wisdom because he follows appetite, which opposes them. To mask his conduct and pacify his soul when those laws stand against the flood of his desire, he pursues ignorance—that is, he casts doubts upon the laws of wisdom and faith. Arguing with him to refute those doubts accomplishes nothing, for he too knows the laws of wisdom but forcefully casts them aside because of his appetitive inclination, as it says, “The folly of fools is deceit” and “The folly of fools is folly.” Even if his opponent presents sensory facts, he stops his ears, as explained in “Go away from a foolish man, for you will not know lips of knowledge.” It is therefore better **not to answer his folly** and doubts, **lest you become like him**, as though you too were uncertain and needed to resolve the doubts. Alternatively: do not answer the fool merely from fear that, if you remain silent, people will think you are like him; do not argue simply to display your wisdom. Nevertheless:

###### Malbim on Proverbs 26:5:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 26:5:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/26:5:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own eyes.** Answer him in a manner that prevents him from imagining himself wise because you found no response. Answer with simple words whose main purpose is to show that he is a fool, not with sharp arguments designed to display your own wisdom. The following verses explain what to answer him.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 26:6:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 26:6:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/26:6:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**He cuts off feet and drinks violence who sends messages by the hand of a fool. The legs of a lame man hang down, and so does a proverb in the mouth of fools.** Answer him with this response: the violence he drinks, which cuts off the feet, sends messages by the hand of the fool.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 26:6:2
[Malbim on Proverbs 26:6:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/26:6:2)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
What message does it send? It says, “The legs of a lame man hang down.” The metaphor compares the banquet of appetite that the fool drinks—his being drawn after desire like one drunk with wine—except that he drinks violence instead of wine. The violence he drinks cuts off feet. Just as wine disables the drunkard's feet so that he cannot stand, violence cuts off the feet of the fool who drinks it.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 26:6:3
[Malbim on Proverbs 26:6:3](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/26:6:3)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
It depicts the violence that he drank, which cut off his feet and made him lame through intoxication, as sending a message concerning the lame man: let them also remove his legs. The leg is above the foot and supports the body; the body rests on the legs, and the legs are carried by the feet. But to a lame man who cannot walk on his feet, the legs are a burden and superfluous, and they too must be lifted, removed, and cut off.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 26:6:4
[Malbim on Proverbs 26:6:4](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/26:6:4)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
These words sent by the violence he drank—through the fool—to remove the legs of the lame man whose feet were cut off are the proverb in the mouth of fools. After becoming drunk with the wine of appetite, the fool cannot stand upon his feet—that is, he cannot conduct himself in practice according to the ways of wisdom, but reels and staggers like one drunk with desire. He therefore wishes to remove and cut off the legs as well—the foundations and bases of wisdom—by casting ignorance and doubts upon them. Since appetite has made him lame and unable to stand firmly against desire, the legs upon which man stands, the laws of wisdom, seem to him superfluous and burdensome; he wishes to cut them off just as legs are superfluous to one whose feet have already been severed.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 26:8:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 26:8:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/26:8:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Like binding a stone in a sling is one who gives honor to a fool.** It explains why you should not answer him at length and respectfully, but contemptuously. One who binds a stone into a sling appears to honor the stone by wrapping and securing it, but does so only to hurl it at people, stone them, and kill them. Likewise, the honor you give the fool by answering him with wisdom will be cast from his sling to kill upright people, for he will transform your answers into sling-stones of heresy.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 26:9:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 26:9:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/26:9:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**A thorn rises into the hand of a drunkard, and a proverb into the mouth of fools.** This fool, drunk with the wine of appetite and with his feet and legs cut off as described above, lies down and moves upon his hands until a thorn pierces the hands upon which he walks. Nevertheless, a proverb remains in the mouth of fools with which he seeks to cut off the legs—the pillars of wisdom. The next verse explains the proverb in his mouth.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 26:10:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 26:10:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/26:10:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**The Great One brings forth all, and hires the fool and hires transgressors.** He says that Hashem creates and produces all people—the righteous and wicked, those who walk in wisdom and those drawn after appetite. Everything comes from Hashem, and man possesses no free choice. Hashem “hires” the fool, giving wages even to the fool drawn after appetite, and gives wages to those who transgress His commandments and to every passerby in the world. Righteous and wicked alike are His hired workers, acting according to how He created them and the power He implanted within them, whether for wisdom or appetite. There is therefore no deed, knowledge, reckoning, or punishment, because man has no choice and is compelled in his actions; a hired worker merely comes for his wages.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 26:11:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 26:11:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/26:11:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Like a dog returning to its vomit, a fool repeats his folly.** After explaining that one should answer the fool with simple words of contempt, it explains why he should not answer him through wise argument. The fool repeats his folly like a dog returning to swallow food it vomited—bad food it could not tolerate, yet swallows again. So the fool returns to repeat the ignorance he vomited, although he himself knows it is repulsive. We have explained that the fool knows his folly and doubts have no substance, as it says, “The folly of fools is deceit” and “The folly of fools is folly”; nevertheless he repeats them. What benefit can argument provide?

###### Malbim on Proverbs 26:12:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 26:12:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/26:12:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Have you seen a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.** It now explains why one must answer the fool in a way that prevents him from becoming wise in his own eyes, and what is lost if he does. A fool has more hope than one wise in his own eyes. The fool is drawn after his appetites and breaches the boundaries of wisdom because of their flood, though he knows wisdom's value. There is therefore hope that when his appetite eventually subsides, he will repent and accept discipline. But one wise in his own eyes imagines that his actions accord with wisdom. He knowingly disputes true wisdom, not because appetite compels him, but because he imagines that his corrupt way is wisdom. He has no remedy. You must therefore answer him so that he at least knows that his path is not the path of wisdom; then hope remains.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 26:13:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 26:13:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/26:13:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**The lazy man says, “There is a lion on the road.”** The lazy person, who does not seek wisdom because of laziness, will ultimately reach the still worse trait of being wise in his own eyes, which is worse than being a fool. Wisdom requires diligence and much labor. The lazy person who relaxes his hands from it comes to imagine himself wise, thinking that all his deeds accord with wisdom and that he need not seek its laws from the wise. He imagines that a great lion is on the road and a smaller lion in the city streets. That is:

###### Malbim on Proverbs 26:13:2
[Malbim on Proverbs 26:13:2](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/26:13:2)

* שאם יצא לדרוש החכמות הרמות שאינם מצויים, כמו מעשה בראשית ומעשה מרכבה, יאמר שיטרפנו השחל, רוצה לומר שיצא למינות;

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
* If he goes out to seek lofty forms of wisdom that are not commonly available, such as the Account of Creation and the Chariot, he says the great lion will devour him—meaning that he will fall into heresy;

###### Malbim on Proverbs 26:13:3
[Malbim on Proverbs 26:13:3](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/26:13:3)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
* And even if he studies commonly available matters of wisdom, he fears that a smaller lion will devour him, as was also stated above.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**As the door turns on its hinge**, so **the lazy man turns upon his bed** from side to side without leaving his couch.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 26:15:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 26:15:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/26:15:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**The lazy man buries his hand in the dish.** Even when food is given to him, he extends his hand into the vessel containing it but **is too weary to return it to his mouth** and put food into it. The application is that even when essential food for the soul is given to him, he buries his hand in its vessel but does not take the food itself. For example, when given the Torah's narratives, which one must know, he consumes only the external garment and story of events, without taking the inner content, discipline, and wisdom beneath the vessel and garment.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 26:16:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 26:16:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/26:16:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**The lazy man is wise in his own eyes**, wiser in his estimation than **seven** great sages who **answer him with reason** and explain the reasons and inner meaning of things. He imagines himself wiser than they; this is the man for whom there is less hope than for a fool.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 26:17:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 26:17:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/26:17:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Like one who grasps a passing dog by the ears.** A passing dog was going on its way and had not barked at him, but when he grasps its ears it barks at and bites him. So is one who becomes enraged over a quarrel not his own. The quarrel that barks and sharpens its tongue like a dog had not barked at him; by grasping the barker's ears, he causes it now to bark at him, speak insults and contempt against him, and even bite him.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Like a madman...** Like one who mocks his fellow: first he **shoots sparks** of fire that burn garments, then **arrows** that inflict wounds, and afterward arrows smeared with the drug of **death** that kill.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 26:19:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 26:19:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/26:19:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**So is a man who deceives his fellow.** One who deceives his fellow first harms his possessions, then his body, and afterward his soul—yet to him it is all **like play**.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 26:20:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 26:20:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/26:20:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Without wood, fire goes out; without a complainer, contention grows silent.** Contention consists of matters aroused for which people go to judgment before a judge. It has been explained that hatred arouses contentions, because without hatred people would not object to minor harms from neighbors but would yield to one another. A complainer continually claims that others harm him and thereby arouses disputes. Without a complainer to protest, contention becomes silent, just as fire goes out without wood.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Coal for embers and wood for fire.** To kindle **embers**, a **coal**—a spark of fire—is sufficient; to kindle a great **fire**, however, **wood** is needed and a coal does not suffice. Likewise, to kindle a quarrel, **a contentious man** who arouses disputes is sufficient, like a spark and coal that starts the quarrel. But to ignite a great fire requires **the words of a complainer**, which are **like blows**, as though others struck him severely. In truth, they are not blows from outside, but descend into the chambers of his belly—he only imagines them so. This is also a parable for one who complains about the attributes of the Holy One, blessed is He. There is an ordinary contentious person, and worse than him a chronic complainer who thinks Hashem created man for evil and that evils outnumber benefits, as explained above (18:3).

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Drossy silver plated upon earthenware.** Worse still than the complainer is one who speaks one thing with his mouth and another in his heart: **burning lips**, aflame with apparent love, while **the heart is evil**. This resembles **drossy silver plated upon earthenware**, deceptively appearing to be silver while truly being clay.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**An enemy disguises himself with his lips.** The **enemy** makes himself foreign and unrecognizable **with his lips**, disguising his hatred in outward speech as though he were a friend, while **within himself he sets** plans **to deceive** and cast the other into destruction. Metaphorically, this refers to a hypocrite who flatters with his lips while his heart is distant: with his lips he disguises himself as a believer and servant of Hashem, while he deceives in his heart.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**When he makes his voice gracious, do not believe him.** Do not believe the apparent supplication in his voice, for **many abominations are in his heart**. In the application, do not believe him merely because he multiplies prayer, for his heart is filled with abomination.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Hatred is covered by deception.** Hatred covers its plans in darkness—that is, he conceals in his heart what he intends to do through hatred. Afterward **his evil will be revealed in the assembly**, until ultimately:

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**One who digs a pit will fall into it.** He himself will fall into the pit he dug, and **one who rolls a stone** to harm his fellow will have **the stone return upon the one who rolled it**. The next verse explains the reason.

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**A lying tongue hates those crushed by it.** It depicts metaphorically that the lying tongue itself hates those humbled before it. The habitual receiver of slander loves bold speakers, not crushed and timid ones. Those who speak slander quietly and secretly because they fear to speak openly are hated by the lying tongue, for their fear testifies that their words have no substance. **A smooth mouth brings about a downfall.** The smooth mouth itself—which speaks flattering words and says one thing with the mouth while another is in the heart—creates a slippery place that casts down the person who uses it; he himself will slip and fall into the pit.
