## Malbim on Proverbs Chapter 5

###### Malbim on Proverbs 5:1:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 5:1:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/5:1:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**My son, attend to my wisdom.** These are the laws of wisdom. It has already been explained that the laws of wisdom cannot be demonstrated by proof; they are received through tradition, and you must listen to and accept them. **Incline your ear to my understanding.** Understanding is what a person comprehends through his own reason, deriving one thing from another by means of his understanding. Incline your ear to weigh these matters upon the scales of your understanding.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 5:2:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 5:2:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/5:2:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**To preserve discretion.** Corresponding to “attend to my wisdom,” he explains that you should preserve discretion—the profound counsels of wisdom. Corresponding to “incline your ear to my understanding,” he says, **and your lips shall guard knowledge**. As I have explained, “knowledge” applies to matters apprehended with certainty, either by the senses or through demonstrations of understanding. I have also explained that knowledge is associated with the lips. Through understanding, contemplate until you attain knowledge and clear certainty, so that your lips, which express words of knowledge, will preserve that knowledge.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 5:3:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 5:3:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/5:3:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**For the lips of a strange woman drip honey.** This contains both a parable and its meaning. The parable concerns a strange woman and the inclination of desire. The enticements of her lips resemble honeycomb, because she sweetens his desire for him, **and her palate is smoother than oil**: the taste of the transgression seems smooth as oil, and he senses no defect in it. In the allegorical meaning, it speaks of the inclination toward idolatry, through which the heart strays after alien opinions. The lips always allude to knowledge: the opinions upon which they build their proofs seem as sweet as honeycomb. Likewise, the flavor of her wisdom—the palate always alluding to wisdom—seems as smooth as oil, without defect.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 5:4:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 5:4:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/5:4:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**But her end is bitter as wormwood.** This is the opposite of “her lips drip honey.” **Sharp as a double-edged sword** is the opposite of “her palate is smoother than oil.” The soul tastes bitterness even in the premises they established, and through the conclusions they derive from them to deny the foundations of faith, it is cut down by the double-edged sword—the sword of punishment.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 5:5:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 5:5:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/5:5:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Her feet descend to death.** One who follows her and obeys her—as in “the people at your feet” (Exodus 11)—will be led by her to death. **Her steps support the grave.** Sheol is the deep pit into which a person may sometimes fall while still alive. Even the steps of one merely going toward her, though he has not yet lain with her, support the pit into which he will fall, and he will no longer be able to escape. Allegorically, one already captured by heresy will suffer the death of the soul; even one who merely follows its way, employing its deceptive syllogisms and philosophical premises, may no longer be able to escape.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 5:6:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 5:6:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/5:6:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Lest you weigh the path of life.** We have explained the distinction between a path and a course: a course is a circuitous road, and the measure used to calculate a circuitous course so that it reaches the straight road is called a balance. Do not attempt to travel a circuitous route through the harlot’s house in order to reach the path of life, calculating how you will return from that course to the straight path—as in the proposal, “Let us pass the entrance of the harlots, subdue our inclination, and receive a reward.” **Her courses wander**: her courses move and deviate from the straight path, **and you will not know** how to return to the path of life. Allegorically, do not say that through investigation and philosophy you will return to faith and establish everything by proof; afterward your soul will wander in circuits of doubt, and you will no longer find the true way to the light of faith.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 5:7:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 5:7:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/5:7:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And now, children, listen to me.** Listen to the laws of wisdom received from the Lord, **and do not depart from the sayings of my mouth**. The mouth alludes to wisdom; do not depart from it toward philosophical inquiry and the opinions of heretics.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 5:8:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 5:8:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/5:8:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Distance your way from her.** Do not let your road pass by her, and **do not approach the entrance of her house** even when the harlot is not there. Allegorically, distance yourself from the ways of idolatry and heresy. Do not even approach the premises and syllogisms through which one enters the gates of denial. Do not say that you will use those syllogisms to build a faithful house for Torah and testimony.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 5:9:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 5:9:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/5:9:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Lest you give your splendor to others.** Splendor is the soul’s inner beauty. Through immorality the light of the intellect and the soul’s splendor are dimmed, and **your years** are given **to a cruel one**, as a cruel disease that rules over adulterers dominates your body. Allegorically, through heresy you surrender your splendor—your soul and intellectual powers—to “others,” to matters that do not promote the soul’s happiness but lead it to destruction. You give your years to a cruel one, for the years of the wicked are shortened.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 5:10:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 5:10:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/5:10:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Lest strangers be sated with your strength.** The body’s generative power will satiate strangers—that is, a strange woman. **And your labors**—your wealth and possessions acquired through toil, as in “through toil shall you eat of it”—**will be in the house of a foreigner**. The children of the foreign woman, who are not regarded as related to you, will inherit you, for the child of a gentile woman has her status.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 5:11:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 5:11:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/5:11:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And you will groan at your end, when your flesh and body are consumed.** At the end, when your flesh is exhausted through the wearing away caused by desire, you will groan and regret the past. Allegorically, when one approaches his end and his flesh and desires—which led him to depart from the foundations of faith in order to satisfy bodily desire—are consumed, he will groan and regret. He will then contemplate the eternal world that he lost through the strange woman, meaning heresy. One whose loins are girded with faith does not grieve over the consumption of the flesh, because he hopes for the life of the soul.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 5:12:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 5:12:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/5:12:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**And you will say: How I hated discipline.** Discipline comes through chastisement or fear of punishment; this you hated completely. **Reproof** consists of reasoning with a person and returning him to the good way through intellectual arguments. I did not hate this outright, but **my heart despised it**; I regarded it with contempt.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 5:13:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 5:13:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/5:13:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**I did not listen to the voice of my teachers, nor incline my ear to those who instructed me.** One who instructs is greater than one who merely directs. A director shows a person once how something should be done; an instructor teaches him repeatedly, through rational study, and explains the matter. He adds that he did not even incline his ear to hear such instruction.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 5:14:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 5:14:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/5:14:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**I was almost**—because of something slight, namely the desires of this world, which are worth nothing and endure only briefly. How could I sell my birthright for this little pleasure, until **I was amid every evil**, with every calamity coming upon me and the loss exceeding the gain? Moreover, my evils came upon me publicly, **amid the congregation and assembly**, bringing humiliation and wrath.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 5:15:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 5:15:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/5:15:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Drink water from your own cistern.** Instead of the inclination’s enticement to hew broken cisterns that cannot hold water, drink from your own cistern—the waters of wisdom and knowledge. A cistern differs from a well: the water of a cistern is collected rainwater, while the water of a well springs forth. He compares the beginning of wisdom-study to collected cistern water, because at first one receives the laws of wisdom solely through tradition. Afterward they become **flowing water from within your well**: they resemble well water and an ever-strengthening spring, as one develops new insights through his own reason. The waters of knowledge also become so strong within his heart that they flow outward from the well to teach Torah and wisdom to others, until—

###### Malbim on Proverbs 5:16:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 5:16:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/5:16:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Your springs disperse outside.** His teachings spread to his children and students, and afterward **streams of water flow in the streets**. There is a distinction between “outside” and “the street”: outside means behind the houses, where only members of the household are found, while the street is the broad public area before the houses. Eventually all Israel will draw and drink from the waters of his wisdom, which will become streams spreading in every direction, as the Sages said: he becomes like an ever-strengthening spring and a river that never ceases.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 5:17:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 5:17:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/5:17:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Let them be yours alone.** Although the springs of your wisdom spread outward, the teachings will be stated in your name, and the reward for the wisdom will be yours alone. **And not for strangers with you.** Although your students who disseminate your wisdom will also share the reward with you, they are not strangers, for they are regarded as your children.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 5:18:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 5:18:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/5:18:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Let your source be blessed.** The source is the place from which the spring that spreads through the depths of the earth begins to flow. Allegorically, it means that your intellect will be blessed, for you will find sound understanding from the Lord. **And rejoice in the wife of your youth**, namely the Torah that you received in your youth.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 5:19:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 5:19:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/5:19:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**A loving doe and a graceful ibex.** Both the doe and the ibex dwell upon divided mountains and rocks, and their womb is narrow, as it says, “Do you know the time when the ibexes of the rock give birth; do you observe the calving of the does?” The doe awakens love and the ibex awakens grace. He compares the higher wisdom to a doe and ibex in their swift course over divided mountains. Wisdom likewise comes from above, from a lofty place; it moves swiftly through its intellectual apprehensions and arouses love and grace. Corresponding to the graceful ibex he says, **Let her breasts satisfy you at all times**: the breasts are associated with union, when grace is aroused. Corresponding to the loving doe he says, **Be enraptured always with her love**, even when not engaged in union. Allegorically, when you unite with wisdom to produce conclusions and new insights, her breasts will satisfy you by enabling you to discover new things; even when you produce no new insights, be enraptured with love of her by reviewing the earlier truths you have already attained.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 5:20:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 5:20:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/5:20:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**Why, my son, should you be enraptured with a strange woman?** You would then go still further astray and embrace the bosom of a foreign woman, who is worse than the strange woman, being the daughter of a foreign god. Allegorically, the strange women are deceptive branches of wisdom. Why should you become enraptured with them when wisdom and knowledge are available in the Lord’s Torah? The foreign woman represents the teachings of heresy and denial, which you will later embrace.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 5:21:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 5:21:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/5:21:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**For a man’s ways are directly before the eyes of the Lord.** A way is the straight road, while a course is circuitous; measuring a course so that it reaches the straight road is called weighing it. A person’s straight spiritual ways stand directly before the Lord, Who prepared the straight way for him through the Torah, as it says, “You shall make known to them the way in which they shall walk.” **And He weighs all his courses.** If at times he must travel a course that deviates from the straight way—for example, through exceptional piety beyond the letter of the law, or by temporarily overriding a Torah law for the needs of the hour, as Elijah did on Mount Carmel—the Lord weighs and directs that course too, so that through it he reaches the straight way.

###### Malbim on Proverbs 5:22:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 5:22:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/5:22:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**His iniquities will capture the wicked man.** In contrast to the good ways of a person, which are before the Lord’s eyes and in which the Lord assists him to purify himself and walk rightly, the wicked man’s ways do not come from the Lord; his own iniquities capture him. As the Sages said, one who comes to purify himself is assisted, while one who comes to defile himself is merely given an opening. There is a distinction between iniquity and sin. Iniquity denotes distortion of the intellect, while sin denotes the actual deed; iniquity is distorted thought, while sin is a defect in action. When desire entices and compels the wicked man to transgress, while he fears the Lord’s punishments and the Torah’s command, he summons iniquity—intellectual distortion—to assist him. He distorts his thought to deny the commandment and its Commander, His knowledge and Providence, reward and punishment, and similar matters. His iniquities thereby capture him into violating the command. Nevertheless, his principal support is not intellectual distortion. Had there been no sin—his desire for the transgression—he would not have relied upon iniquity and denial. Rather, **he is supported by the cords of his sin**: the cords of his desire support him, and through them he employs iniquity and denies the commandment to satisfy his inclination. By becoming habituated to sin, however, he is drawn into heresy and grasps iniquity—intellectual distortion and denial—until eventually—

###### Malbim on Proverbs 5:23:1
[Malbim on Proverbs 5:23:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Proverbs/r/5:23:1)

**Sefaria Community Translation:**
**He will die without discipline.** He will no longer accept discipline, meaning warnings about the Lord’s punishments. Even when the Lord punishes him, he will not receive discipline, **and in the abundance of his foolishness he will go astray**. He will cling to folly, for the fool casts doubt upon everything. He will not believe that the punishment came through Providence, but will doubt and attribute it to chance. Therefore he will not accept discipline, because he explains everything as happenstance.
