**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
The oracle of the word of Hashem. After prophesying about what would occur during the Second Temple period, he now prophesies about what will occur at the End of Days. He introduces his words by declaring that this is **“the utterance of Hashem,”** who **“stretches out the heavens, lays the foundation of the earth, and forms the spirit of man within him.”** The human spirit within the body forms the connection and bond between heaven and earth, for the body originates from the earth while the spirit comes from the higher realms. Humanity was thereby created according to the pattern of the greater world, containing within itself both the upper and lower worlds. The entire world was created for humanity, which is the purpose of all creation and leads all existence toward perfection. Therefore, Hashem devises means so that no one banished from Him will remain cast away, and in the future He will rebuild humanity in perfect form when the time of restoration arrives.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
The siege will also be against Judah when they come to besiege Jerusalem.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Behold, I.** It has already been explained in Ezekiel (chapters 32, 37, and 38) that at the End of Days, the armies of Gog and Magog, representing the nations of Edom, will assemble to seize Jerusalem from the Ishmaelites. The Ishmaelites will fight against them, and the two sides will kill one another. Hashem will wage war against both groups, executing upon them the prescribed judgment for the evils they inflicted upon Israel during the destruction of the Temple and throughout the exile. He first declares that **“Jerusalem shall become a bowl of poison to all the peoples.”** They will drink from this bowl, become intoxicated, and fall into confusion. **“And the siege against Jerusalem shall also extend over Judah.”** That is, before they reach Jerusalem and besiege it, they will besiege Judah and inflict many evils and afflictions upon Israel.

[Malbim on Zechariah 12:3:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zechariah/r/12:3:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And it shall come to pass on that day that I will make Jerusalem a burdensome stone.** The peoples who represent the Ishmaelite kingdom, in whose possession Jerusalem will then be, will stand against the nations coming to besiege it. They will seek to carry Jerusalem upon their shoulders—that is, to retain possession of it—but this burden will become a burdensome stone that cuts their flesh, like a load too heavy to bear that is also a sharp stone lacerating its carrier. He explains why they will be wounded by it: **“For all the nations of the earth shall assemble against it.”** All the armies of Gog and Magog will gather to seize Jerusalem from the Ishmaelites who are carrying its burden. He calls the Ishmaelites “peoples” and those assembling against them “nations,” because, as I have explained elsewhere, a “people” is of a higher rank than a “nation.” Those initially gathering against them will be from the inferior masses, while the Ishmaelite kings will fight against them.

###### Malbim on Zechariah 12:4:1
[Malbim on Zechariah 12:4:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zechariah/r/12:4:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**On that day, says Hashem.** He explains that everything will come from Hashem, who will create confusion between the two sides. Regarding the inferior nations that will advance to conquer Jerusalem, **“I will strike every horse with bewilderment and its rider with madness.”** Just as a madman acts through the power of imagination without the counsel of reason, so their gathering will be irrational and without any ordered purpose. Since the children of Israel living in the exile of Edom will be endangered when these nations march to conquer Jerusalem, He says, **“I will open My eyes over the House of Judah,”** so that they will not perish in this upheaval. Regarding the peoples of Ishmael, under whose control Jerusalem will then be, He says, **“I will strike every horse of the peoples with blindness,”** so that they will not see whom they are fighting and will kill one another.

###### Malbim on Zechariah 12:5:1
[Malbim on Zechariah 12:5:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zechariah/r/12:5:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And they shall say.** The Messiah son of Joseph will then arise, and the people of Judah will be strengthened. According to the teaching of our Sages that Gog is destined to invade the Land of Israel three times, during the first invasion every horse will be struck with blindness, while during the latter two the people of Judah will gain strength. **“And the leaders of Judah shall say in their hearts that the inhabitants of Jerusalem,”** who are righteous, **“give them strength”** through their righteousness and their trust **“in Hashem their God.”**

###### Malbim on Zechariah 12:6:1
[Malbim on Zechariah 12:6:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zechariah/r/12:6:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**On that day I will make the leaders of Judah like a brazier of fire among wood.** They will provoke strife, contention, or actual warfare between the two sides. On one side, they will be **“like a brazier of fire among wood.”** Just as wood is brought to a furnace and burned there, so they will bring the nations—the armies of Gog—to the Land of Israel to be consumed there. On the other side, **“they shall be like a flaming torch”** placed **“among sheaves”** of straw, which burns the straw in the place where it lies. Likewise, they will consume the Ishmaelites in their own places and lands. Thus, they will devour on the right and on the left, attacking both sides. **“And Jerusalem shall again be inhabited in its own place, in Jerusalem.”** This means that during this invasion, the enemy will not reach Jerusalem itself or besiege it. They will not reach Jerusalem until the third invasion, concerning which chapter 13 says, “The city shall be captured.” I have similarly explained in Ezekiel, chapter 39, that they will not reach Jerusalem until the final invasion. Thus, at this stage Jerusalem will remain safely inhabited in its place, and they will be unable to harm it. The added phrase **“in Jerusalem”** is based upon the explanation in Ezekiel (chapter 48) that in the future Jerusalem will be relocated forty-five *mil* south of its present site, where the future city will stand, while the site of present-day Jerusalem will be designated for Hashem’s priests and the Temple (as explained above, 2:16). The verse therefore teaches that during this war of Gog, Jerusalem will still be situated in its original location, within present-day Jerusalem, and will not yet have been relocated. This change will occur only after all the wars have ended.

###### Malbim on Zechariah 12:7:1
[Malbim on Zechariah 12:7:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zechariah/r/12:7:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And Hashem shall save the tents of Judah first.** This refers to Gog’s first invasion, when he will not yet reach Jerusalem but only the cities of Judah, seeking to harm their inhabitants in their cities and tents. Hashem will then save them miraculously. Consequently, **“the glory of the House of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem shall not be magnified over Judah.”** Although during the final war, when Jerusalem itself is besieged, Hashem will perform glorious miracles in Jerusalem, its inhabitants will be unable to exalt their glory above Judah, since Hashem will already have performed miracles for Judah before performing miracles for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, among whom the House of David will be found.

###### Malbim on Zechariah 12:8:1
[Malbim on Zechariah 12:8:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zechariah/r/12:8:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**On that day.** During Gog’s first invasion, Hashem will protect the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the enemies will be unable to reach it at all, for they will not arrive there until the final invasion. **“And the one who stumbles among them on that day shall be like David.”** All the inhabitants of Jerusalem will be righteous. Even if one of them should stumble into sin, he will resemble David, who repented immediately and whose sin Hashem removed. **“And the House of David shall be like Divine beings,”** like an angel, of whom sin cannot be conceived because an angel has no evil inclination. Likewise, they will not sin at all. They will also be **“like the angel of Hashem before them,”** for Israel will honor them as though they were Hashem’s angels and messengers appointed to guide the people along the upright path.

###### Malbim on Zechariah 12:9:1
[Malbim on Zechariah 12:9:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zechariah/r/12:9:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And it shall come to pass on that day.** The Messiah son of Joseph will then be killed in battle, and this will bring about two consequences: (1) As a result, **“I will seek to destroy all the nations,”** for the sin of killing him will cause Hashem to seek their punishment and destruction; (2) as a result:

###### Malbim on Zechariah 12:10:1
[Malbim on Zechariah 12:10:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zechariah/r/12:10:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And I will pour upon the House of David a spirit of grace and supplication.** As a result, they will seek Hashem with supplications and obtain grace and favor from Him. When they see that “the breath of our nostrils, Hashem’s anointed, of whom we said, ‘Under his shadow we shall live,’” has fallen in battle, they will be aroused to repentance and prayer. **“And they shall look to Me concerning the one whom they pierced.”** They will reflect upon the fact that he died because of the sins of the generation, as though they themselves had pierced him through their transgressions. They will look toward Hashem, return to Him, and seek His help from His Sanctuary, since their mighty stronghold has fallen. **“And they shall mourn for him as one mourns for an only son.”** At first, they will mourn for him as people mourn an only son who has died and has no one to replace him. Even afterward, when the Messiah son of David is revealed, **“they shall grieve bitterly for him, as one grieves for a firstborn,”** because he was the first to arise and save them. Their mourning for him will therefore continue even afterward.

###### Malbim on Zechariah 12:11:1
[Malbim on Zechariah 12:11:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zechariah/r/12:11:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**On that day, the mourning in Jerusalem shall be as great as the mourning of Hadad-Rimmon.** Our Sages explained this as the mourning for Ahab, who was killed by Ben-Hadad, a worshiper of the idol called Rimmon, and as the mourning **“in the Valley of Megiddon,”** namely, the mourning for Josiah, who was killed by Pharaoh Necho at Megiddo. The mourning for Josiah was like mourning for an only son, since at that time Israel had only one king. The mourning for Ahab, when Israel had two kings, was like mourning for a firstborn, because he ruled over ten tribes. It also means that the Ten Tribes mourned for Ahab, while the tribes of Judah and Benjamin mourned for Josiah; but all the tribes will mourn for the Messiah son of Joseph.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And the land shall mourn.** Each family will conduct its own separate mourning. At that time there will be the family of the House of David, comprising David’s descendants, and the family of the House of Nathan, who was one of David’s sons, which will then form a distinguished family of its own. Likewise, among the family of Levi there will be a particular distinguished family called the House of Shimei, and they will mourn separately. So too, all the families will mourn individually, each family by itself and their wives separately.
