## Malbim on Zechariah Chapter 14

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Behold.** He now relates how Gog and Magog will come against Jerusalem for the final time, when they will reach Jerusalem itself. During all their previous invasions, they will not touch Jerusalem, as explained in Ezekiel, chapter 38. This is the meaning of the statement that a day appointed especially for Hashem will come, and then **“your spoil shall be divided in your midst,”** for the enemy will already have begun plundering and seizing spoil within Jerusalem itself. He then explains how this will occur:

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And I will gather all the nations.** Hashem will place it into the hearts of the nations to assemble against Jerusalem for war. It has already been explained in Ezekiel, chapters 32 and 38, that at the End of Days the descendants of Edom will gather to seize Jerusalem from the Ishmaelites. The city will then be captured, its houses plundered, and half the people will already have gone into exile. But the enemy will not have enough time to complete its task and exile everyone, **“and the remainder of the people shall not be cut off from the city.”** This will be because:

[Malbim on Zechariah 14:3:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zechariah/r/14:3:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And Hashem shall go forth and fight against those nations.** It has already been explained in Ezekiel that Hashem will send confusion among the two opposing armies, causing them to kill one another. This will occur through Hashem’s Providence. In this respect, it will be **“as on the day when He fought on the day of close combat.”** There is a distinction between close combat and war: in close combat, a person fights his enemy at close range and grapples with him, whereas war may also be waged from a distance with arrows, stones, and similar weapons. Thus, Hashem will not fight them from afar through natural causes, but at close range, without any intermediary, through miraculous Divine power.

###### Malbim on Zechariah 14:4:1
[Malbim on Zechariah 14:4:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zechariah/r/14:4:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And His feet shall stand.** An earthquake will then occur. He depicts **“the feet of Hashem”**—meaning the effects brought about by Him, for this is what “feet” signifies when speaking of spiritual beings—as standing **“upon the Mount of Olives,”** which lies east of Jerusalem. The Mount of Olives will split through its center toward both the east and the west; that is, the fissure will extend from east to west. Consequently, **“the mountain shall move from its place,”** half toward the north and half toward the south, leaving **“an exceedingly great valley”** between its two halves. If this is understood literally, it accords with what Ezekiel was shown (chapter 48): that the future Jerusalem will be forty-five *mil* from the site of the Temple. Since other prophets had already foretold that Jerusalem would remain in its present location, our prophet explains that this will occur because the Mount of Olives adjoining Jerusalem will be moved from its place together with all its surroundings, over an area five thousand reeds in length and width—equivalent to fifteen *mil*, the future dimensions of Jerusalem as explained there. This site will be forty-five *mil* from the northern half of the mountain, and upon it the future Jerusalem seen by Ezekiel will be built and established. In this way, the words of all the prophets will be fulfilled without contradiction.

###### Malbim on Zechariah 14:5:1
[Malbim on Zechariah 14:5:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zechariah/r/14:5:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And the valley of My mountains shall be closed.** Some textual versions read **וְנִסְתַּם**, “and it shall be closed.” This means that the valley opening in the center of the mountain, together with the abyss from which this great mountain-shattering earthquake will emerge, will immediately close, leaving a level plain. According to the version that reads **וְנַסְתֶּם**, “and you shall flee,” it means that everyone will flee into the valley between the two halves of the mountain that have now separated. Once the earth has already split open in a particular place, there is less danger from the earthquake there than in a place where it has not yet opened. Everyone will therefore flee into the valley between the mountains. He says that **“the valley of the mountains shall reach Azal,”** meaning that the valley will extend southward to a place called Azal, forty-five *mil* from present-day Jerusalem. The mountain will collapse as far as that place, and the valley will extend to it. At the place called Azal, one half of the mountain will come to rest, and the future Jerusalem will be built upon it. **“And you shall flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah, king of Judah.”** That earthquake occurred because Hashem was zealous for His honor and against Uzziah, who challenged the priesthood of Aaron. Likewise, at that future time Hashem will be zealous for His honor and against those who challenge the honor and sanctity of Israel’s faith. **“And Hashem my God shall come, and all the holy ones with You.”** At that time, however, the earthquake will not result from Hashem’s anger against Israel as it did in the days of Uzziah. Isaiah then saw Hashem sitting upon a high and exalted throne, with seraphim standing above Him, while the Temple filled with the smoke of Hashem’s wrath. But at that future time, Hashem and all His holy ones will come with you to protect and assist you, rather than withdrawing to His throne in heaven and punishing you as before.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**The valley of My mountains.** The word **הָרַי** has the same meaning as “mountains,” like the forms “the joints of my hands” and “he cut out windows for it,” for the original mountain will become two mountains. “Azal” is the name of a place.

###### Malbim on Zechariah 14:6:1
[Malbim on Zechariah 14:6:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zechariah/r/14:6:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And it shall come to pass on that day that there shall be no light.** The light of the sun and moon will then cease to illuminate the world, as it is written (Isaiah 60:19), “The sun shall no longer be your light by day,” and, “Hashem shall be your everlasting light.” No physical light will then exist—**neither precious light nor congealed light.** That is, there will be neither the light of the sun, which possesses its own precious and intrinsic light, nor the light of the moon and stars, which merely receive the light that shines upon their solid spheres when the sun strikes them and its light is reflected. No physical light will exist at all.

###### Malbim on Zechariah 14:7:1
[Malbim on Zechariah 14:7:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zechariah/r/14:7:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And it shall be one day.** The day will no longer be divided into daytime and night, morning, noon, and evening, for these divisions exist only while the physical luminaries function. Instead, it will be one continuous day, entirely joined together as daylight. **“It shall be known to Hashem,”** for its light will be attributed to Hashem, not to the sun, moon, or other luminaries; rather, “in His light we shall see light.” Therefore, it will be **“neither day nor night,”** since the names “day” and “night” apply only to physical light that rises and sets. The light that will then exist will be constant and entirely unchanging, neither rising nor setting, so the terms “day” and “night” will not properly apply to it. **“And at evening time there shall be light.”** When the physical sun sets, the essential light—the light of Hashem—will begin to shine. This is a wondrous allegory: the illumination and influence emanating from the physical luminaries will cease, and Hashem Himself, in His glory, will illuminate, govern, and rule through a constant and unchanging flow of Divine influence. There will therefore be no darkness or affliction, nor any withdrawal or diminution of influence such as necessarily occurs under the natural order governed by the celestial system, whose bodies rise and fall and thereby produce alternating good and evil conditions. There will then be only light, goodness, peace, and prosperity.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And it shall come to pass on that day that living waters shall flow from Jerusalem.** At first, he said that a fountain would be opened only within Jerusalem. After the final war, however, the waters will increase until they flow outward and spread toward the eastern and western seas. Besides occurring literally, as I explained above (13:1), this also symbolizes the spread of the waters of knowledge and the river of true faith from sea to sea and from the river to the ends of the earth. He explains:

[Malbim on Zechariah 14:9:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zechariah/r/14:9:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And Hashem shall be King over all the earth.** This is the meaning symbolized by the waters: the entire world will recognize Hashem’s kingship and unity. Until then, some nations did not believe in Divine unity, maintaining that there were two or more first principles; but **“on that day Hashem shall be one.”** Other nations acknowledged Hashem’s unity but associated other powers with Him in His governance, His name and remembrance, His emanation, or similar matters. At that time, **“His name shall also be one,”** for everyone will believe in His true unity, His Providence, His exclusive governance, and His kingship. In the future, the name of Hashem—the Tetragrammaton—will also be pronounced as it is written, for the various Divine names correspond to different modes of governance, such as justice, kindness, and compassion. In the future, however, there will be one simple and unified mode of governance.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**All the land shall become like the Arabah.** After the Mount of Olives divides into two, the valley between the two mountains will become like the Arabah, a level plain. This plain will extend **from Geba,** which lies south of present-day Jerusalem, **to Rimmon.** Near Rimmon will stand the new Jerusalem seen by Ezekiel, which will be located south of present-day Jerusalem.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And it shall be raised up.** Jerusalem itself—both the old Jerusalem, where the Temple will stand upon the northern half of the mountain, and the new Jerusalem, where the city will stand—will be high and exalted. **“And it shall be inhabited in its place,”** for both will stand upon mountains, as Jerusalem has always done. Its extent will be **“from the Gate of Benjamin to the site of the First Gate,”** where it stood in former times, **“to the Corner Gate, and from the Tower of Hananel to the king’s winepresses.”** There the new Jerusalem will stand.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And they shall dwell in it.** This will be unlike the period of exile, when it was uninhabited. **“And there shall no longer be destruction,”** unlike during the First Temple period, when it was destroyed after having been settled. **“And Jerusalem shall dwell securely,”** unlike former times, when it was continually afflicted by wars.

**And it shall come to pass on that day that each man shall grasp.** When a man seeks **to grasp his neighbor’s hand** and support him so that he will not fall amid the confusion Hashem places among them, **his hand shall rise against his neighbor’s hand** to cast him to the ground. This represents the utmost confusion and frenzy.

**And Judah also.** The construction of the verse is: **“Judah also shall fight in Jerusalem.”** Those of Judah who remain in Jerusalem—the survivors within the city, as stated above, “The remainder of the people shall not be cut off from the city”—will also go forth to battle once they see that Hashem has thrown the enemy into confusion. **And if the family of Egypt does not ascend.** The Egyptians do not require rain, and they were among the nations that marched with Gog, as mentioned in Ezekiel. They witnessed Hashem’s punishments and were struck by the plague at that time. Their punishment will therefore be that the plague returns upon them a second time. When the plague returns because of Egypt, it will also include the other nations that failed to come to Jerusalem and will spread among them; withholding rain alone will no longer suffice as their punishment. This is the meaning of **“and not upon them alone shall be the plague with which Hashem will strike the nations”**—that is, it will also strike the other nations **“that do not ascend to celebrate the festival of *Sukkot*,”** even though on another occasion, when they failed to ascend, withholding rain had been sufficient.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**This shall be the punishment of Egypt and the punishment of all the nations.** Since Egypt’s sin will be more severe—because they joined Gog and failed to learn from their punishment—they will be afflicted with a plague, a greater punishment than the withholding of rain. Through them, this will also become the punishment of all the other nations, which will likewise be struck by the plague together with Egypt.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And it shall come to pass that every pot in Jerusalem and Judah** will be holy, for they will cook peace offerings and other offerings of lesser sanctity in them. **“And all those who offer sacrifices shall cook in them,”** for the number of worshipers will greatly increase because of the many converts who ascend to Jerusalem. There will no longer be merchants selling sheep, turtledoves, and young pigeons for offerings, as there had been previously, when they charged inflated prices. No one will conduct commerce or seek profit from these things, for everyone will voluntarily dedicate their animals as sacred offerings.
