**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And the angel returned.** The prophet did not understand the preceding vision and did not know the meaning of the statement that He would engrave the seven eyes. He therefore fell into sleep and slumber, as occurs when the word of Hashem is concealed from a prophet. The angel consequently came to him again, awakened him from his sleep, and showed him another vision explaining the first.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**What do you see?** That is, through this vision you will see the explanation of the preceding one. **And I said, “I have seen, and behold, a menorah entirely of gold, with a bowl upon its top.”** Upon its top was a fountain-like reservoir, a large bowl from which the oil would flow toward the branches of the menorah. He saw seven lamps upon the menorah, namely, the receptacles containing the oil and the wicks, **and each lamp had seven pipes** through which the oil flowed from the bowl into the lamp. The menorah signifies the light of Hashem, which illuminates the entire world with His glory, at the time when the glory of Hashem will shine forth and all people will walk by its light. He saw the menorah in its complete and perfect form, entirely of gold, signifying that the glory of Hashem will be revealed in majesty and splendor, for glory and beauty. He saw a bowl upon its top, representing the supernal fountain from which Hashem’s blessing and influence will flow into the seven lamps. The seven lamps of the menorah are the seven supernal attributes within the emanation of the Divine, through which He governs the world. Through these attributes He exercises Providence and bestows influence, pouring forth the good oil through the well-known supernal fountain—the river that flows from Eden to water the garden. The oil descends to each lamp through seven pipes, because each of the attributes contains all the others within itself, whether expressed as kindness, severity, or compassion. Through this vision He showed him that in the future the celestial order would no longer rule. That order is likewise represented by a menorah with seven lamps, namely, the seven planets: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, the Sun, Venus, Mercury, and the Moon. But that menorah is not made of gold, for it is of an inferior rank, nor is the bowl upon its top, for the supernal fountain is distant from it. Its source is therefore an unreliable spring, and the supply of oil above it is deficient. In the future, however, the pure menorah—the menorah of gold—will shine, and Hashem will appear in His holy sanctuary to illuminate the world and bestow the sacred oil. For then He will engrave the seven eyes of Hashem, which are the seven supernal lamps, upon the chief stone, and the earth will shine with their glory.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And two olive trees were beside it.** Beside the menorah, close to the bowl, stood two olive trees, one to the right of the bowl and the other to its left. This will be explained in verses 11–12.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And I answered and said, “What are these, my lord?”** That is, I still do not understand precisely what this signifies.

###### Malbim on Zechariah 4:5:1

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And the angel answered, “Do you not know what these are?”** That is, surely the essential meaning of the menorah and its seven lamps is known to those initiated into the mysteries of Hashem, for the menorah in the Temple likewise symbolized these matters. **And I said, “No, my lord.”** He replied that although he understood the mystery of the menorah, he did not know what it signified in this particular vision or how it related to his present prophecy.

###### Malbim on Zechariah 4:6:1
[Malbim on Zechariah 4:6:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zechariah/r/4:6:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And he answered and said to me, “This is the word of Hashem to Zerubbabel.”** He informed him that this menorah symbolized Hashem’s word and promise to Zerubbabel: **“Not by an army and not by strength.”** When He brings His servant, the Branch, from the descendants of Zerubbabel, Hashem will govern without any intermediary. It will not be through the celestial order, which requires an army capable of prevailing by natural means, nor through the angels. Although governance through angels is miraculous and does not require an external army, it nevertheless requires an inner strength, for a miracle does not rest upon something empty, as it is written, “Go with this strength of yours, and you shall save Israel from the hand of Midian.” **“But by My spirit”** means that the spirit of Hashem alone will govern and rule through His particular Providence. This is symbolized by the golden menorah and its seven lamps, and by the seven eyes of Hashem that He will engrave upon the foundation stone.

###### Malbim on Zechariah 4:7:1
[Malbim on Zechariah 4:7:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zechariah/r/4:7:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Who are you?** He depicts how, over the long period extending until the End, the chief stone—the foundation stone of the building (mentioned above in 3:9)—will sink into the depths of Mount Moriah. When the time arrives for the future Temple to be built, the stone will be swallowed up within this great mountain, and they will be unable to remove it. He therefore commands the mountain to become a level plain. Concerning this he says, **“Who are you, O great mountain, standing before Zerubbabel”** and preventing him from extracting the stone? I command you to become a plain so that **“he may bring forth the chief stone.”** Then there will be **“shouts of ‘Grace, grace to it!’”** Everyone will acclaim the stone, saying, “Grace, grace,” for it will find favor in everyone’s eyes. This will be unlike the construction of the Second Temple, which found no favor in the eyes of the elders who had seen the First Temple, and who wept bitterly, as related in Ezra and Haggai.

###### Malbim on Zechariah 4:8:1
[Malbim on Zechariah 4:8:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zechariah/r/4:8:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
(8–9) **And the word of Hashem came.** He now explained these matters and informed him prophetically that **“the hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this House.”** That is, at present he laid only the foundation for the building that will arise in the future, for the Second Temple that they were now building was not a finished and complete structure. It lacked five things and was destined to be destroyed. It was merely the foundation and beginning of the building that will arise at the End of Days. Then **“his hands shall complete it”**—the construction will then be brought to completion. As our Sages said, this is why they built it partly according to the design of Solomon’s Temple and partly according to Ezekiel’s design for the future Temple: it was an intermediate structure between the two, the conclusion of the first building and the foundation of the final one. Then **“you shall know that Hashem of Hosts has sent me to you.”**

###### Malbim on Zechariah 4:10:1
[Malbim on Zechariah 4:10:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zechariah/r/4:10:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**For who has despised the day of small things?** At the present time, the building appears small in your eyes, and this day—the era of the Second Temple’s redemption—is of limited significance. Those who despise this building and this small day **will rejoice** in the future, when **they see the plummet-stone in Zerubbabel’s hand—these seven.** They will see these seven eyes that were engraved upon the stone. At present, the number seven signifies the governance of nature through the seven servants of the celestial order, namely, the seven planets. At that time, however, they will see that these seven engraved upon the stone—as it is written, “Upon one stone are seven eyes; behold, I will engrave its engraving”—**are the eyes of Hashem.** They are not the eyes of the stars and constellations, but represent Hashem’s own eyes and His Providence operating without an intermediary. **They roam throughout the entire earth,** for He will then exercise particular and miraculous Providence. The angel thereby explained the vision of the menorah with its seven lamps, which represents the seven eyes of Hashem that will illuminate the earth and its inhabitants in the future. These will be engraved upon the chief stone, for the future Temple will be the place where the glory of Hashem dwells permanently and watches with the seven supernal eyes—His seven attributes and *sefirot*—over His people and His inheritance.

###### Malbim on Zechariah 4:11:1
[Malbim on Zechariah 4:11:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zechariah/r/4:11:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
(11–12) **And I answered and said to him.** After the angel had explained the vision of the menorah and its seven lamps, the prophet asked him to explain what was symbolized by the two olive trees that he saw standing to the right and left of the menorah. The olive trees began at the same level as the menorah on its two sides, while their tops reached the bowl above it; thus, they stood alongside both the menorah and the bowl. As he watched, he also saw two golden conduits beside the olive trees—pipes through which the oil from the trees flowed into the bowl. Beside the two pipes were two clusters of olives—olives growing together in an ear-like cluster—one cluster for each conduit. The oil pressed from each cluster flowed through its conduit into the bowl. The olive trees and their clusters were not made of gold, but were actual olive wood and fruit; only the conduits were gold. The oil that flowed through the conduits into the bowl appeared like gold. Concerning this he says, **“which pour out the gold from themselves.”** He therefore asked specifically what the clusters and the conduits represented.

[Malbim on Zechariah 4:13:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zechariah/r/4:13:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And he said, “Do you not know what these are?”** For he should already have understood on his own that the olive tree symbolized those anointed with the anointing oil. **And I said, “No, my lord,”** for I do not understand their relationship to the menorah.

###### Malbim on Zechariah 4:14:1
[Malbim on Zechariah 4:14:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zechariah/r/4:14:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And he said, “These are the two sons of oil.”** They are the king and the High Priest, who are anointed with the sacred anointing oil. Their position beside the menorah signifies that they are **“those who stand beside Hashem of all the earth.”** The miraculous influence descending from Hashem—symbolized by the oil flowing from the bowl into the branches of the menorah—will come through the sons of oil, by virtue of the king and the High Priest. The king will uphold the commandments governing relations between one person and another, namely, justice and kindness, while the High Priest will uphold the Torah and the Temple service, the commandments governing the relationship between human beings and God. Through their deeds, the good oil of their actions will rise upward, and the oil of Divine Providence will be drawn into the bowl, which they will transform into a flowing fountain. They are therefore depicted as olive trees from which oil flows into the bowl to illuminate the menorah’s lamps, while the conduits carry the oil from the olive clusters into the bowl. Since both are human beings, they are depicted not as gold but as olive trees, for “man is a tree of the field.” The influence that flows through their deeds into the bowl by way of the conduits, however, is made of gold and pours forth gold, for it draws down the miraculous Divine favor symbolized by gold.
