**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And again I lifted my eyes.** After showing him in the preceding visions that this redemption and the rebuilding of the Temple were not yet the true redemption and the principal rebuilding, Hashem showed him the sins because of which the Temple would be destroyed and Israel would be exiled a second time. He looked, and behold, there was a flying scroll soaring through the air.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Its length was twenty cubits and its width ten cubits.** This scroll came forth from the entrance of the Sanctuary, and its dimensions corresponded to those of the Sanctuary’s entrance, which was twenty cubits high and ten cubits wide.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And he said to me, “This is the curse that goes forth.”** All the curses invoked by those who swore falsely with an oath of imprecation were written upon this scroll, and it went forth to exact punishment from those who swore falsely. It emerged from the Sanctuary because Solomon had requested this in his prayer (I Kings 8:31–32): “When a man sins against his neighbor, and an oath is imposed upon him to make him swear, and the oath comes before Your altar in this House, then hear in heaven and judge Your servants, condemning the wicked.” He prayed that when one person imposed an oath upon another, the oath would come before the altar, and from there judgment would issue against anyone who swore falsely. It was also their practice to administer oaths and curses in the Temple, particularly in cases of theft, as it is written (Judges 17:2), “The eleven hundred pieces of silver that were taken from you, concerning which you uttered a curse.” In cases involving hidden acts, they would impose a ban and a curse upon anyone who knew the truth but concealed it. Likewise, whenever “the oath of Hashem shall be between them,” the curse would come before the altar in the Sanctuary. He now saw these curses that had been brought into the Sanctuary of Hashem emerging from it to execute judgment and take effect upon those who had sworn falsely. All the curses were depicted as written upon this scroll, which was as large in length and width as the entrance to the Sanctuary, indicating that they had filled the Sanctuary with their curses. This is the meaning of **“This is the curse that goes forth”** to execute judgment.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**For everyone who steals clears himself by means of this oath.** A thief who swore under a curse in order to clear himself of suspicion would swear in the same terms as the curse written in the scroll, accepting that curse upon himself in order to establish his innocence. Likewise, anyone who swore concerning other matters would take his oath from this curse written in the scroll. The vision depicts him as though he took part of the curse and used it when he stole and swore falsely. This is the meaning of **“clears himself by means of it”**: he cleared himself of suspicion by invoking the very words of the curse written in the scroll. The scroll therefore contained the oath and curse that he accepted upon himself in order to clear himself of suspicion. Therefore:

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**“I have brought it forth,” says Hashem.** It will emerge from the Sanctuary to execute judgment, **“and it will enter the house of the thief and lodge within his house,”** since he took this curse and accepted it upon himself. **“And it will consume his house, together with its wood and its stones.”** As our Sages said, a false oath destroys even things that fire and water cannot destroy.

###### Malbim on Zechariah 5:5:1
[Malbim on Zechariah 5:5:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zechariah/r/5:5:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And the angel went forth.** Since he wished to show him another matter—how they had other sins as well, and how He would punish them for those sins according to the *ephah* of their transgression, by measure and by weight, unlike the punishment for a false oath, which is without limit or measure—the angel proceeded to another level and showed him another object coming forth.

###### Malbim on Zechariah 5:6:1
[Malbim on Zechariah 5:6:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zechariah/r/5:6:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**This is the *ephah* that goes forth.** It is the measure that goes forth to judge measure for measure, so that the punishment corresponds to the nature and measure of the sin. This *ephah*, which goes forth to punish other sins, does not emerge from the Sanctuary as the scroll did, because other sins do not come before the altar as a false oath does. Concerning this he says, **“This is their eye throughout all the earth.”** That is, the eye that watches over these sins is not the eye within the Sanctuary, but the eye of Providence present throughout the earth, which punishes according to the measure of the sin. Its judgment is therefore not as severe as that of the eye within the Sanctuary.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And behold.** He saw, on one side, a disk of lead being lifted from the ground, and he also saw **a woman sitting inside the *ephah*.** The angel then explained the meaning of the vision to him:

[Malbim on Zechariah 5:8:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zechariah/r/5:8:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And he said, “This is wickedness.”** He explained that the woman sitting inside the *ephah* represented wickedness, which had been revealed and depicted in the form of a woman. Wickedness sits inside the *ephah* to indicate that wickedness itself will punish the wicked: it measures out the punishment of the evildoer in the *ephah*, according to the measure of his wickedness. Thus, wickedness itself sits within the measuring vessel that administers punishment. He then explained the meaning of the disk of lead by **casting the woman into the *ephah* and casting the lead stone over the mouth of the *ephah*.** That is, by punishing the wicked through their own wickedness, and by placing the evil they committed within the *ephah* to measure out their punishment measure for measure, they will recognize Hashem’s judgments and become afraid to do evil. Wickedness will consequently cease, and the punishments will come to an end. The *ephah* will be covered by a disk of lead, which muffles sound, so that the voice of the wickedness sitting within it will no longer be heard. Thus, iniquity will shut its mouth when people see that there is a providential Judge who rewards and punishes. How fitting, therefore, are the words of our Sages, who derived from this passage that the Men of the Great Assembly abolished the inclination toward idolatry and cast it into a lead vessel that absorbs sound. This allegorically means that when the people witnessed Hashem’s judgments and punishments, the heretical belief represented by the inclination toward idolatry was abolished—the belief that Hashem had abandoned the earth to the governance of the stars and constellations. From that time onward, this voice was silenced, the *ephah* was sealed, and wickedness was buried within it.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And I lifted my eyes and saw.** He saw another vision in which **two women came forth.** Our Sages explained that these represent hypocrisy and haughtiness, which descended to Babylon. That is, after he saw that the *ephah* had been sealed and that heresy and the inclination toward idolatry had ceased, he saw another evil, equivalent to idolatry, that had spread among them. In place of the one woman who had sat inside the *ephah*, he saw two women: hypocrisy, which is equivalent to idolatry because the hypocrite performs all his deeds deceitfully to win the favor of others, thereby introducing a partner into his worship; and haughtiness. As the author of *Duties of the Heart* wrote, hypocrisy is concealed partnership: a person worships both Hashem and other human beings, while privately denying Hashem. Likewise, through haughtiness a person becomes exalted in his own heart, imagines that he has attained knowledge of the Divine, and relies upon his own intellect and understanding, thereby falling into heresy. This occurred during the Second Temple period among the various sects that arose within Israel, whose emergence was caused by these two evil women. They took the place of the one woman—the inclination toward idolatry—who had been cast into the *ephah*. He saw, however, that **they had wings like the wings of a stork.** Although the stork is an impure bird, it presents itself as though it performs kindness. As our Sages said, “Why is it called a *ḥasidah*? Because it acts with kindness toward its companions.” Storks also refrain from sexual immorality, and naturalists report that these birds punish adulterers. Likewise, the people of this generation will make themselves appear devoted to their God and engaged in acts of kindness, while in truth they are impure, for they are entirely hypocritical. Their end will also resemble that of the stork, which takes wing to distant lands, as it is written, “Even the stork in the heavens knows its appointed seasons.” He saw **wind in their wings**—a spirit of pride and a spirit of hypocrisy—and they rose upon the wings of their imaginative faculty. **And they carried the *ephah* between the earth and the heavens.** They belonged neither to the earth nor to heaven, but stood between them: in their outward deeds they appeared to stand in heaven, while in the hidden thoughts of their hearts they were earthly, descending with the spirit of the beast toward the earth below. They again carried the *ephah* forth to punish sinners for the wickedness of their deeds.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
(10–11) **And I said.** When he saw that they were carrying the *ephah* of punishment to another land, **he asked, “Where are they taking the *ephah*?” And he said to me, “To build a house for it in the land of Shinar.”** He informed him that because of these sins, the Temple would be destroyed and Israel would again go into exile, with many of the exiles settling in the land of Shinar, where a large Jewish population remained. These sins were also the reason that many Jews remained in Shinar and did not return during the Second Temple period. He further informed him that **“it shall be set there upon its base,”** for that is the proper place for the *ephah*. Hypocrisy and haughtiness are also found in Babylon, as our Sages said, and there the *ephah* will rest, for that is its established dwelling place.
