## Malbim on Zechariah Chapter 6

###### Malbim on Zechariah 6:1:1

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And again I lifted my eyes.** In the first vision, he had seen a man riding upon a red horse, representing the Greek Empire, which seized dominion after Darius. Now He showed him the kingdoms that would arise in the world until the End of Days. He saw **four chariots coming forth.** Each chariot was drawn by four horses, for each empire comprises four kingdoms: each of the world’s four directions is ruled by a different kingdom and influenced by its own particular heavenly prince, who receives his influence from the supernal Chariot, which is likewise divided according to the four directions, as explained in the interpretation of Ezekiel’s Chariot. He saw them **coming forth from between two mountains,** for they would be divided into two groups: two chariots emerged from the mountain of destruction and were destined to harm Israel, while two emerged from the mountain of assembly and were destined to benefit Israel. **And the mountains were mountains of bronze.** The Babylonian Empire, represented by gold, and the Median Empire, represented by silver—as Nebuchadnezzar saw them in his dream—had already passed from the world. The Greek Empire would now begin, which was represented in Nebuchadnezzar’s dream by bronze, the metal that follows silver.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**In the first chariot were red horses.** The Greek Empire, which arose first, was prepared to shed much blood, just as he had seen in the first vision a man riding upon a red horse. **And in the second chariot were black horses.** This represents the Roman Empire, which followed the Greek Empire and was likewise prepared to shed blood. This is included in the color black, as our Sages said (in the chapter *Elu Terefot*), “Black is actually red that has been stricken.” In addition, the color black signifies the dark and gloomy exile and the long night that Israel would endure under Roman rule. These two chariots emerged from the same northern side.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And in the third chariot were white horses.** After the Roman Empire ceases, another kingdom will arise that will not shed as much blood and will not treat Israel as harshly. The burden of exile will be lightened throughout the four directions of the world, as it has been during the present millennium, whose chariot horses are white and benevolent. **And in the fourth chariot were speckled, powerful horses.** He saw the kings who would arise near the time of redemption depicted as speckled and powerful, for the reason that will be explained in verses 6–7.

###### Malbim on Zechariah 6:5:1
[Malbim on Zechariah 6:5:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zechariah/r/6:5:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**These are the four winds of heaven.** Each empire encompasses the four directions, as symbolized by the four horses in each chariot. They **go forth after standing before Hashem of all the earth,** who sent them to rule over the earth by the command of the exalted and uplifted One.

###### Malbim on Zechariah 6:6:1
[Malbim on Zechariah 6:6:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zechariah/r/6:6:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**The chariot containing the black horses.** He did not explain the red horses, because he had already discussed them in the first vision. He therefore began with the black horses, representing the Roman Empire, **which will go forth toward the northern land** to seize dominion there. It will itself also be northern, for from the north calamity will break forth to destroy Jerusalem. **And the white horses went forth after them.** He did not specify the direction in which the white horses would go, because they have no particular direction. They would follow the black horses and spread throughout the east and west, representing all the kings who would rule, each in his own territory, after the Roman Empire had ceased. **And the speckled horses went forth toward the southern land.** Near the days of the Messiah, a speckled kingdom will arise. Its rulers will emerge from the white horses but will have both black and white markings, for they too will be stirred to wage war. From them will emerge Gog and Magog, who will come from the far north toward the south, namely, the Land of Israel. They will then divide into two camps and wage war against one another, as explained in Ezekiel, chapters 38–39. At the End of Days, the descendants of Edom—who will then be the speckled horses—will arise to conquer the Land of Israel from the Ishmaelites, who are the powerful horses, for they will muster their strength to resist their attackers, and the two sides will fight one another. Concerning this he says:

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And the powerful horses went forth.** They went forth to wage war against the speckled horses. **And they sought to go and traverse the earth:** they intended to seize the kingdom of the speckled horses and march into their land to wage war. But they would only seek to do so, for they would fall there among those slain around Jerusalem in the war of Gog and Magog. **And he said, “Go.”** This refers to all four kingdoms. After describing the vision of the four chariots, the prophet relates that he heard the angel say to them, **“Go, traverse the earth,”** informing them of the decree of the Watchers that they would rule over the earth until the End of Days.

###### Malbim on Zechariah 6:8:1
[Malbim on Zechariah 6:8:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zechariah/r/6:8:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And he caused me to cry out and spoke to me.** He roused me to utter a great and bitter cry, while also speaking words of consolation to me. The phrase **“He caused me to cry out”** is explained by the words, **“See those going forth toward the northern land.”** The prophet cried out because of the red and black horses going forth toward the northern land, for Hashem showed him the evils and afflictions that Israel would suffer through them. The phrase **“and he spoke to me”** is explained by what he said to me: **“They have appeased My spirit in the northern land.”** They have calmed and quieted the wrath that I bore toward Israel, and I am destined to bring them a favorable end, for the spirit of anger has subsided.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Take.** The exiles in Babylon sent three men carrying silver and gold from which two crowns were to be made: one for Zerubbabel, who would be king of the land, and the other for Joshua, the High Priest—a gold crown for the king and a silver crown for the High Priest. Hashem commanded the prophet to take the silver and gold brought by the exiles through Heldai, Tobijah, and Jedaiah. He instructed him not to wait for them to come to him, but **“you shall go,”** meaning that the prophet himself should go to them. Nor was he to wait until the following day, but to go immediately, **“on that day.”** He also specified where he would find them: **“You shall enter the house of Josiah,”** for they had gathered there **“when they came from Babylon,”** and Josiah was likewise one of the Babylonian exiles.

[Malbim on Zechariah 6:11:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zechariah/r/6:11:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And you shall take.** You shall personally take the silver and gold from their hands, **and you shall make crowns**—you shall make them, not they. Although you will make two crowns, you shall place only one crown upon the head of Joshua the High Priest. The second crown, intended for the king, shall not be placed upon Zerubbabel.

###### Malbim on Zechariah 6:12:1
[Malbim on Zechariah 6:12:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zechariah/r/6:12:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And you shall say to him.** You shall explain the reason: **“For thus says Hashem: Behold, a man whose name is the Branch.”** Zerubbabel is called “the Branch,” as stated above (3:8), “For behold, I am bringing My servant, the Branch.” The reason for this name is that he is not yet a fully grown and completed plant, but is only destined to sprout. He is therefore called Zerubbabel—“sown in Babylon”—for he resembles a seed hidden in the earth that is destined to sprout. At present, he exists only in potential, not in actuality. He himself will not sprout; rather, **“from beneath him shall sprout”**—that is, from among his descendants who will arise after him, the Branch will emerge who **“shall build the Sanctuary of Hashem,”** namely, the final Temple that will be built at the End of Days.

###### Malbim on Zechariah 6:13:1
[Malbim on Zechariah 6:13:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zechariah/r/6:13:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And he.** Although Zerubbabel was also building the Sanctuary at that time, there is a distinction between them: **he**—the Messiah-King who will sprout from among his descendants—**shall build the Sanctuary of Hashem, and he shall bear the majesty of Hashem.** This was not true of Zerubbabel, who was building the Temple but did not bear Hashem’s majesty. **And he shall sit and rule upon his throne.** The Messiah will sit and exercise dominion, unlike Zerubbabel, who did not rule because he was subject to the kings of Persia. Nor did Zerubbabel sit upon his own throne, for he remained subordinate. It may also mean that the Messiah will sit **upon the throne of Hashem’s majesty,** as king upon the throne of Hashem. **And the priest shall be upon his throne.** At that time, the priest too will occupy the throne appropriate to him, whereas at present even the priest does not occupy his rightful throne. Then **“the counsel of peace shall be between them both.”** At present there is no peace between the one who occupies the throne of government and the priest. In the days of the Hasmoneans, the priests assumed the royal crown and claimed greatness for themselves. Later, the crown of the priesthood was degraded by the monarchy, which sold the office for money and treated it with contempt. In the future, however, each will sit peacefully upon his own throne.

###### Malbim on Zechariah 6:14:1
[Malbim on Zechariah 6:14:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zechariah/r/6:14:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And the crowns.** Therefore, for the present, the crowns will belong neither to the king nor to the High Priest, but to Helem, who is Heldai, to Tobijah and Jedaiah, and to Hen, who is Josiah, for they were the ones who provided them. Nevertheless, the crowns will remain **as a memorial in the Sanctuary of Hashem.** They were suspended high within the Sanctuary (as mentioned in tractate *Middot*), so that Israel would remember what they were required to do. If they repented completely, the time of redemption would arrive immediately, and the king and the High Priest would wear the crowns. This is the meaning of the following:

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And those who are far away.** That is, **if those who are far away come**—namely, the Israelites who are presently distant and did not return during the Second Temple period—if they awaken and all ascend together like a wall, **they shall come and build the Sanctuary of Hashem.** Then **“you shall know that Hashem has sent me to you,”** meaning that the promises Hashem sent me to prophesy to you will then be fulfilled. But this depends upon your deeds. Therefore, he says, **“And it shall come to pass,”** meaning that this will happen **if you diligently obey the voice of Hashem your God.** The promises will then be fulfilled immediately: those who are far away will come, the dispersed of Israel will be gathered, they will build the Sanctuary of Hashem, and the crown will be restored to its former glory.
