## Malbim on Zechariah Chapter 9

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**An oracle.** This continues the preceding passage: in those days, when ten men will grasp the garment of a Jewish man and so forth, there will be **“an oracle of the word of Hashem in the land of Hadrach.”** The word of Hashem and prophecy will then be found even in the land of Hadrach, an exceedingly distant land. There too the word of Hashem will be revealed, and people will ask the Jew living there to teach them the word of Hashem, for it will then spread throughout the entire nation (as it is written in Joel 3:1, “Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,” and so forth). **“And Damascus shall be its resting place.”** Until then, the resting place of the word of Hashem had been Jerusalem, as it is written, “For you have not yet come to the resting place,” and, “This is My resting place forever.” At that time, however, it will extend as far as Damascus, which will form the northernmost boundary of the Land of Israel, as stated in Ezekiel, chapter 47. He explains the reason: **“For the eye of man shall be directed toward Hashem,”** meaning that the eyes of all humanity will look toward Hashem, together **“with all the tribes of Israel,”** who will look toward Him with particular devotion.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And Hamath shall also border upon it.** Hamath too will lie along the northern boundary of the Land of Israel. Likewise, **Tyre and Sidon, though it is exceedingly wise,** will border upon the Land of Israel and form part of its boundary (as explained there in Ezekiel 47:15–17, where Damascus, Hamath, Tyre, and Sidon form the northern boundary of the Land of Israel; see there).

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And she built.** This is a parenthetical statement. In passing, the prophet saw in his vision what would befall Tyre and the Philistines—whose lands would also become Israel’s inheritance—during the intervening period. Tyre was first utterly destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar (as Ezekiel prophesied in chapters 26–28). It was afterward rebuilt in a different location, whereupon Alexander the Macedonian came, constructed a causeway across the sea to the city, and destroyed it a second time, never to be rebuilt. Concerning this he says, **“Tyre built herself a fortress,”** meaning that after Nebuchadnezzar destroyed it, the city constructed a fortified wall around itself, **“and she amassed silver like dust”** through her extensive commerce. None of this would help her, for:

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**She shall see.** Alexander then also destroyed the Philistine cities, which had always been allies and supporters of Tyre. As Jeremiah said (chapter 47), “The day is coming to plunder all the Philistines, to cut off from Tyre and Sidon every remaining ally”; and as it is written in Joel (4:4), “What are you to Me, Tyre and Sidon and all the districts of Philistia?” See also Amos 1:3–6. Concerning this he says, **“Ashkelon shall see”** the fall of Tyre **“and be afraid; Gaza shall writhe,”** and Ekron too shall writhe, “for its hope has been put to shame.” As it is written in Zephaniah 2, “Ekron shall be uprooted.” **“And the king shall perish from Gaza.”** Gaza would later be resettled, but it would no longer have a king, whereas Ashkelon would remain entirely uninhabited.

**And a *mamzer* shall dwell in Ashdod.** No ordinary inhabitants will dwell there; only *mamzerim*, driven from their own cities because of their disqualified status, will settle there. He says this disparagingly of the Philistines, whose origins lay in illegitimacy—as our Sages explained concerning the words “from whom the Philistines emerged”—for another *mamzer* will occupy their place.

**And I will remove.** Through the destruction that I will bring upon him, I will remove from his mouth the blood of Israel that he shed, as stated in Amos 1. **“And his abominations”** refers to his idolatry. Then **“he too shall remain for our God.”** Just as Damascus and Tyre will become part of the Land of Israel, so too will the territories of the Philistines. **“And he shall be like a chief in Judah”** means that he will belong to the tribe of Judah and become one of its great cities in which Torah is studied. **“And Ekron shall be like the Jebusite.”** Just as the Jebusite dwelt in Jerusalem, which afterward became the city of God, so Ekron will become holy to Hashem.

**And I will encamp around My House.** I will encamp there like a military camp with soldiers guarding My House, **against an army passing through and returning.** That is, neither an army passing through the Land of Israel nor an army that has already passed through and seeks to return by that route will be permitted to cross it. Ezekiel explains that in the center of the Land of Israel there will be a strip seventy-five *mil* wide, extending across the entire length of the land from east to west. The Temple will stand in the center of this strip, and Hashem will encamp there permanently. Since the entire strip will be holy to Hashem, He will not permit an army to pass through it. Consequently, **“an oppressor shall never again pass over them,”** for they will be protected by Hashem. **“For now I have seen with My eyes”** means that I will watch over them—so the commentators explain. In my opinion, however, the words “For now I have seen with My eyes” refer to the following statement, “Behold, your king shall come to you.” (And the statement—

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Rejoice greatly, daughter of Zion.** This is a parenthetical statement. The sense of the passage is that the prophet now saw the Messiah-King standing before Hashem, and he declares in Hashem’s name, **“For now I have seen with My eyes that your king shall come to you.”** Both Hashem and the prophet speaking in His name see him in the prophetic vision coming to redeem Israel. Therefore, **the daughter of Zion shall rejoice greatly** over the miracles that will continually occur there, while **the daughter of Jerusalem,** where the multitude of the people dwells, **shall shout** joyfully upon seeing the face of their king. He explains that she will rejoice **because I have seen with My eyes that your king shall come to you, righteous and saved** by Hashem. He will not be saved by the strength of a great army but through his righteousness, for he will be **poor and humble,** the opposite of the pride and might of a king saved by a vast army. He will be **riding upon a donkey,** rather than upon a horse prepared for the day of battle. Even if he rides **upon a colt,** a young animal whose use confers greater honor—as it is written, “riding upon thirty colts” (Judges 10:4)—it will not be the colt of a horse, but **a colt, the offspring of she-donkeys.**

**And I will cut off.** Likewise, **“I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim,”** for chariots were prepared for war, **“and the horse from Jerusalem,”** because they will not ride upon horses. They will travel on foot to make the pilgrimage, and nothing impure will enter there. **“And the battle bow shall be cut off”** of its own accord, for they will no longer require bows, as it is written, “He shall judge among the nations,” and, “Nation shall not lift sword against nation.” This is the meaning of **“He shall speak peace to the nations.”** Nevertheless, his dominion will extend **“from sea to sea,”** from the eastern sea to the western sea, **“and from the river”** that flows from Eden **“to the ends of the earth,”** from south to north.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**As for you also.** This refers back to the daughter of Zion and the daughter of Jerusalem mentioned above, representing the nation as a whole. **Through the blood.** The construction of the verse is: **“Through the blood of your covenant, in which there is no water, I have released your prisoners from the pit.”** Throughout the exile, you sacrificed yourself for the sanctification of God’s name, preserved the blood of the covenant of circumcision, and refused to exchange blood for water. Others told you that immersion or the sprinkling of water was sufficient and could replace the blood of circumcision, but you preserved your faith and upheld the covenant of blood, which contains no water of sprinkling but only the blood of circumcision. That is, you did not exchange your religion for another. By virtue of this merit, **“I have released your prisoners from the pit.”** You were imprisoned in the pit throughout the period of exile, but you were set free. The verse may also be understood more simply: through the blood of the covenant, I released your prisoners **“from a pit in which there is no water.”** During the Babylonian exile they were in a pit filled with water, for Babylon is a deep place filled with water; now I have released you from the second, dry pit, namely, the Roman exile.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Return to the stronghold.** Return from the pit of exile to the fortified place, for Zion will be made secure. You are then **“prisoners of hope,”** who have long awaited the redemption. **“Even today I declare that I will restore double to you.”** I have something to tell you that will bring a twofold restoration—that is, doubled miracles occurring at two different times: the wars of the Hasmoneans against the Greeks in the days of Antiochus, and the future war of the descendants of Ephraim against Gog and Magog. Both were future prophecies. He says **“even today”** because this includes one announcement concerning something that would occur during the present era, before the final redemption: the war of the Maccabees against the Greeks.

###### Malbim on Zechariah 9:13:1

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**For I have bent Judah as My bow.** The first announcement concerns what would occur during the Second Temple period, when the descendants of Judah would defeat the Greeks through Hashem’s supernatural salvation. Judah would be like a bow bent in Hashem’s hand to wage war against the Greeks. The second announcement is, **“I have filled the bow with Ephraim.”** In the future, during the war of Gog and Magog, the descendants of Ephraim—the Ten Tribes, who were not present during the Second Temple period—will arise and become Hashem’s bow in the war against Gog and Magog. The clauses correspond to one another: **“For I have bent Judah as My bow, and I will arouse your sons, Zion, against your sons, Greece.”** This occurred during the Second Temple period, when the inhabitants of Zion and the tribe of Judah fought against the Greeks. **“I have filled the bow with Ephraim, and I will make you like the sword of a mighty warrior.”** At that time, the descendants of Ephraim will slay with sword and bow the armies of Gog and Magog that assemble against them.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**And Hashem.** These clauses likewise correspond to one another. During the war of the Maccabees, Hashem will appear over them to save them; they also saw at that time a miraculous sign from Hashem, as Rashi explains. **“And His arrow shall go forth like lightning”** from the bow. They will bend the bow, and from it Hashem’s arrow will emerge like lightning to destroy the Greeks. During the final war of Gog and Magog, however, **“Hashem God shall sound the shofar”** to gather the dispersed from the four corners of the earth, as it is written, “And it shall come to pass on that day that a great shofar shall be sounded, and those lost in the land of Assyria shall come,” and so forth. **“And He shall advance in the storms of the south.”** Against the army of Gog coming from the northern land, a storm wind will come from the south to confound and destroy them.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**Hashem of Hosts shall protect them.** They will not need to wage war at all. Rather, **“they shall eat and subdue the slingstones”**—merely by eating, they will overcome the battle and the slingstones that their enemies hurl against them. **“They shall drink and roar as though from wine”**—by drinking and roaring like those who drink wine, **“they shall be filled with blood like a sacrificial basin,”** which is filled with the blood of an offering, **“and like the corners of the altar,”** upon which the blood of the offerings is dashed and poured. So too will they be filled with the blood of the slain, not through their own warfare, but while they eat and drink and Hashem strikes their enemies dead. He compares the blood of the slain to the blood in the sacrificial basin, which is favorably accepted before Hashem, indicating that Hashem will likewise favor their deeds and their victory.

**For they shall be like the stones of a crown.** Continuing the metaphor that compares them to a flock, he says that they will also resemble sheep in this respect: sheep do not seek gold or precious stones fit for a crown, but only good pasture and water. Likewise, they will seek only for the soil to produce grain and wine for them to eat and drink, rather than crown jewels. **For upon His land, grain and wine shall shine like the stones of a crown.** The grain and wine produced by the soil will be regarded by them as precious crown jewels, just as grass and water are like pearls and precious stones in the eyes of sheep, for they will not pursue wealth or grandeur.
