**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**“The word of Hashem”**—etc. **“the son of Hezekiah”**: Scripture traces Zephaniah’s lineage back four generations because his ancestors were distinguished men. Some say that he was descended from King Hezekiah.

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**“In the days of Josiah”**—that is, before he repented and instituted religious reform.

###### Malbim on Zephaniah 1:2:1

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**“I will utterly sweep away everything”**—First, he states in a general way that God will gather up and remove everything that exists; afterward, he explains the details.

###### Malbim on Zephaniah 1:3:1
[Malbim on Zephaniah 1:3:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zephaniah/r/1:3:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**“I will sweep away man and beast, also the birds and the fish”**—as it says in (Hosea 4): **“the beasts of the field, the birds of the heavens, and even the fish of the sea shall be taken away.”** This may be understood metaphorically. Or it may be taken literally: domesticated birds flee from desolate places, and fish also move away from abandoned shores where there is no food provided by human beings who cast things into the sea, as explained by Radak. **“And the stumbling blocks”**—He will remove the stumbling blocks together with the wicked. Some explain that He will remove the things that cause the wicked to stumble. He then clarifies that His primary intent is: **“And I will cut off man”**—meaning all the nations **“from the face of the earth,”** for Nebuchadnezzar destroyed most of the nations.

###### Malbim on Zephaniah 1:4:1
[Malbim on Zephaniah 1:4:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zephaniah/r/1:4:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**“And I will stretch out”**—After describing the general sweeping destruction, he now explains in detail that God **“will stretch out His hand against Judah.”** **“And I will cut off the remnant of Baal”**—for Josiah had already eradicated the worship of Baal, but some remnant still remained. **“And I will cut off the idolatrous priests”**—these are the priests who worshiped the sun, **“together with the priests”**—that is, even the priests of Hashem, for God may destroy the righteous together with the wicked.

###### Malbim on Zephaniah 1:5:1
[Malbim on Zephaniah 1:5:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zephaniah/r/1:5:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**“And those who bow upon the rooftops to the host of heaven”**—these are the wicked, who worship the heavenly bodies. **“And those who bow and swear to Hashem”**—these are the righteous, who bound themselves by oath to worship only Hashem. **“And those who swear by their king”**—these are the intermediate people, who serve neither Hashem nor Baal consistently, but instead follow whatever the king commands. If the king worships Hashem, they imitate his ways; if he worships Baal, they turn after him.

###### Malbim on Zephaniah 1:6:1
[Malbim on Zephaniah 1:6:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zephaniah/r/1:6:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**“And those who turn back from following Hashem”**—these are people who initially served God but afterward turned away from Him. **“And those who did not seek Hashem”**—these are those who never sought Him at all, **“nor inquired of Him”**—meaning they never even turned to Him or sought His guidance in any matter.

###### Malbim on Zephaniah 1:7:1
[Malbim on Zephaniah 1:7:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zephaniah/r/1:7:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**“Be silent”**—These are the words of the prophet. After conveying the word of Hashem, he says: therefore, **“Be silent”** and let **all flesh** be still before Hashem, **“for the day of Hashem is near”**—the time is close. Moreover, He has already **“prepared the sacrifice”**—meaning, the decree has already been determined. **“He has consecrated His guests”**—namely, Nebuchadnezzar and his armies, who are appointed to carry out the judgment.

###### Malbim on Zephaniah 1:8:1
[Malbim on Zephaniah 1:8:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zephaniah/r/1:8:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**“And it shall come to pass on the day of Hashem’s sacrifice”**—He now lists those who will be slain in this decree. **“And I will punish the officials and the king’s sons”**—these are those who would first be killed during the exile of Jehoiachin, and afterward during the exile of Zedekiah. **“And all those clothed in foreign apparel”**—those appointed by the king wore distinctive garments, following the custom of the officials of the surrounding nations.

###### Malbim on Zephaniah 1:9:1
[Malbim on Zephaniah 1:9:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zephaniah/r/1:9:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**“And I will punish all who leap over the threshold”**—these are the attendants and servants of the officials. Malbim says this expression is used somewhat humorously: just as the priests of the Philistines would leap over the threshold when entering a place they regarded with fear, so too these servants would leap about when entering the houses of their masters. They are the ones **“who fill their masters’ houses with violence and deceit”**—for they are the officers and enforcers who carry out oppression and robbery.

###### Malbim on Zephaniah 1:10:1
[Malbim on Zephaniah 1:10:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zephaniah/r/1:10:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**“And it shall come to pass”**—On the heights (**“the hills”**), that is, in the elevated places of Mount Zion, the king and his counselors dwelt. **“And in the Second Quarter”** (*ha-mishneh*)—which was lower in rank and location—dwelt the officials. At the **“Fish Gate”** the common people resided. The prophet depicts a scene in which there will be a **“cry”** from the Fish Gate; from the Second Quarter there will be **“wailing”**, which is more intense than a cry; and from the hills there will be **“great destruction”**, for there the principal devastation will take place.

###### Malbim on Zephaniah 1:11:1
[Malbim on Zephaniah 1:11:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zephaniah/r/1:11:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**“Wail”**—There were also the wealthy merchants and traders, who did not take to heart the downfall of the officials, since many of them traveled far away for commerce, following the custom of the people of Canaan—that is, the Tyrians, who were all merchants. They lived in the section of the city called **“Maktesh”** (“the Hollow” or market district). Therefore, the prophet says that **“the inhabitants of Maktesh shall also wail”**, **“for all the people of Canaan are destroyed”**—meaning the merchants, since “Canaan” here refers to traders. This occurred because **“those who weighed out silver have been cut off”**—that is, the moneyed class and commercial activity ceased altogether.

###### Malbim on Zephaniah 1:12:1
[Malbim on Zephaniah 1:12:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zephaniah/r/1:12:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**“And it shall come to pass at that time”**—There were still people who were neither officials nor merchants, but who possessed houses, fields, and vineyards from which they earned their livelihood. These lived in the outskirts of the city, separated from the urban population. Concerning them, the prophet says that God **“will search Jerusalem with lamps”**—meaning He will carefully investigate and examine even these people. **“And I will punish those men”**—namely, **“those settled on their lees”**, like wine left undisturbed in its vessel, resting quietly upon its sediment. These are people **“who say in their hearts: Hashem will neither do good nor evil”**—for the officials and merchants are subject to changing fortunes and therefore fear reward and punishment, but not these people. They imagine that their prosperity does not come from God, since their livelihood seems secure and readily available, and thus they deny Divine Providence.

###### Malbim on Zephaniah 1:13:1
[Malbim on Zephaniah 1:13:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zephaniah/r/1:13:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**“And their wealth shall become plunder”**—The punishments of Hashem will overtake even these people as well, affecting both their wealth and their homes and vineyards.

###### Malbim on Zephaniah 1:14:1
[Malbim on Zephaniah 1:14:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zephaniah/r/1:14:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**“Near”**—After conveying the word of Hashem, the prophet says: Know that the great day is near in time, and it hastens to come through its causes. **“The sound of the day of Hashem”**—he depicts it as though there stands there a mighty warrior, forming with a bitter voice and crying out these words: **“The day of Hashem!”**—that is, the day of Hashem is coming.

###### Malbim on Zephaniah 1:15:1
[Malbim on Zephaniah 1:15:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zephaniah/r/1:15:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**“A day” — “That day”**—That day is a **“day of wrath”**, meaning the general outpouring of Divine anger. It is also a **“day of trouble and distress”**, and a **“day of devastation and desolation”**, meaning that the suffering will come suddenly and catastrophically.

###### Malbim on Zephaniah 1:16:1
[Malbim on Zephaniah 1:16:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zephaniah/r/1:16:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**“A day of shofar and alarm”**—They will sound blasts in preparation for war throughout all the fortified cities, so that they may prepare themselves against the enemy. All of this is the voice of the mighty warrior crying out in bitter tones.

###### Malbim on Zephaniah 1:17:1
[Malbim on Zephaniah 1:17:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zephaniah/r/1:17:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**“And I will bring distress”**—These are the words of Hashem: after **“I bring distress upon mankind”**, they still will not take it to heart to open their eyes and return to Me. Rather, **“they will walk like the blind”**—all of them, failing to perceive that the cause of their suffering is **“because they have sinned against Hashem.”** Therefore, the enemy will come upon them again at the time of destruction, **“and their blood shall be poured out like dust”**.

###### Malbim on Zephaniah 1:18:1
[Malbim on Zephaniah 1:18:1](https://torahapp.org/share/book/Malbim%20on%20Zephaniah/r/1:18:1)

**Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026:**
**“Also”**—Then, **“even their silver will not save them”**, for during the first invasion the enemy had been satisfied with plundering silver. But now, **“in the fire of His jealousy”**—that is, the jealousy of Hashem for the honor of His name will burn, and through this fire **“the whole land shall be consumed”**, for the House of Hashem and the king’s palace were burned. **“For He will make a complete end”**—that is, Hashem **“will make a complete destruction of all the inhabitants of the land.”** Yet the prophet immediately qualifies his words and says: **“But a sudden terror He will bring upon all the inhabitants of the land”**—His intent is not total annihilation, but rather to terrify them so that they will repent, as it says: **“Yet even in those days, I will not make a complete end of you”** (Jeremiah 5:18).
