מָה אָֽנוּ... אֲבָל אֲנַֽחְנוּ עַמְּךָ *What are we?…Yet we are Your people.*Individually we may be small, but collectively we are heirs to greatness. For we are part of God’s people, heirs to His covenant, descendants of the patriarchs and of countless generations of people who, with heroic and understated courage, kept faith with faith itself.

אַשְׁרֵֽינוּ *Happy are we.* There is something momentous in this declaration, after all the suffering the Jewish people have undergone. For we have been summoned to be God’s witnesses, His ambassadors to an often godless world. The English historian A.L. Rowse, at the end of his life, wrote: “If there is any honor in all the world that I should like, it would be to be an honorary Jewish citizen.”
To bless God means to thank Him for His blessings. Every act of acknowledgment opens us to the presence of God in all that surrounds us. “The world is full of the light of God, but to see it we must learn to open our eyes” (Rabbi Naḥman of Bratslav).
