SEDER KORBANOT – OFFERINGS
When the Temple was destroyed, sacrifices ceased. Yet in a momentous leap of the spirit, following the prophet Hosea who said, “Accept our good sacrifices of praise instead of bulls” (Hos. 14:3), the sages said that learning about the sacrifices was like offering them. “Whoever reads the order of sacrifices, I will deem it as if they had offered them before Me and I will grant them pardon for all their iniquities” (*Ta’anit* 27b).
There are many different customs as to which passages to say. Those in large print constitute the original order of prayer as found in the siddurim of Rav Amram Gaon and Rav Sa’adia Gaon. The texts follow the threefold structure of (1) a passage from the Torah, (2) a section of the Mishna, and (3) a passage of Talmud, in this case the Interpretive Principles of Rabbi Yishma’el – considered as Talmud in the broad sense defined by Maimonides as “deducing conclusions from premises, developing implications of statements, comparing dicta, and studying the hermeneutical principles by which the Torah is interpreted” (Laws of Torah Study 1:11).
