אֵל אֶֽרֶךְ You are a God slow to anger, You are called the Master of Compassion, and You have taught the way of repentance. May You remember today and every day the greatness of Your compassion and kindness, for the sake of the descendants of Your beloved ones. Turn toward us in compassion, for You are the Master of Compassion. We come before You in plea and prayer, as You in ancient times showed the humble one [Moses]. Turn from Your fierce anger, as is written in Your Torah. In the shadow of Your wings may we shelter and abide, as on the day when the LORD descended in the cloud. ▸Disregard transgression and erase guilt as on the day You stood with him [Moses] there. Hear our cry and heed our word, as on the day You proclaimed in the name of the LORD, and there it is written:

אָתָֽנוּ We come before You, Former of the winds. In our many iniquities our sighs have grown heavy; the decrees against us powerful and our screams so many – for on the Seventeenth of Tammuz, the Tablets were smashed. We have been exiled from the House of Your choosing; our judgment was sealed, the decree laid down. And the light has darkened over us – for on the Seventeenth of Tammuz, the Torah scroll was burnt. Our enemies destroyed the Sanctuary, the Divine Presence fled from Its corner, and we were yielded up to the hands of the wanton, to be consumed – for on the Seventeenth of Tammuz, an idol was set up in the Temple. We were scattered from city to city, and old and young of us were seized. The place of our delight was destroyed, and fire raged through her – for on the Seventeenth of Tammuz the city was broken through. The lethal foe took hold of our Temple, and the cherubs, bride and bridegroom were deprived of all their ornament. Because we angered You we were given up to destruction – for on the Seventeenth of Tammuz, the daily offering ceased. All glory and praise there ended. The enemy drew his sword and brandished its point against us; small children and babies were prepared for the slaughter – for on the Seventeenth of Tammuz, the offerings and sacrifices ceased. We rebelled against the One who inhabits the Heavens, and so we were dispersed to all the corners of the world. All our dancing was turned to lament – for on the Seventeenth of Tammuz, the Temple service ended. We acted obstinately with You in the discord of tongues, and so our own tongue has learnt lamentation; we have been abandoned in countless numbers – for on the Seventeenth of Tammuz, sin decided our destiny. We have been dispersed and found no relief, and so our sighs have multiplied within us; Rock, see how our souls have been bowed low – and turn our Seventeenth of Tammuz into gladness and joy. We have been obstinate and many calamities have met us; and so we have been yielded up to the plunder, have been pushed into the mud. See, LORD, and release us from disaster – and turn our Seventeenth of Tammuz into joy and gladness. ▸Turn to us, You who reside on High, and gather in our scattered ones from the very ends of the earth. Say to Zion, “Come, get up,” – and turn our Seventeenth of Tammuz to a day of salvation and comfort.

**English Edition; Koren Publishers Jerusalem, 2017:**
אֲמָרֵר It is bitterly that I weep, over the Hand raised against our ruins. I blasphemed Him in His House, in my unfaithfulness and thieving. The Holy Presence broke out and fled, flew ten stretches and rose up to the seventh Heaven. God cut me off, tormented me, burnt me, in the fourth month. He closed the time set for Him to break those young boys, who were like boughs just sprouting. He shot us with His arrows twice, melted and weakened us, as heedless women wept for Tammuz in the Temple. He condemned me and became Enemy to me, then, in the month of Tammuz. Five traps were laid for me, deep in the Scripture of sufferings sent. Those people overcame me for my impurity on the seventeenth of the month. For I was ensnared like a wretched bride, unfaithful beneath a wedding canopy of peace and success. I did not wait for Moses, my shepherd, until the sixth hour, and the Tablets were smashed. From His hand was I ornamented with jewelry of fine gold, brooch and bracelet. They flowed away on the day of His rage, when I corrupted my way, and denounced my faith. I broke off the order of His service and the constant supplies of the altar – from the Chamber of the Lambs, the daily offering is ended. Israel is crumbled to pieces, scattered, storm battered, oppressed. Likened to a ship without a captain, tossed about like a boat. You have taken her by the head for her sins, exposed her twice over to mourning and moaning. Her enemies waged war on her on this day, and the city was broken through again. She fled out like a chased gazelle to hide, when none sought her. They sharpened their tongues, they made her like a lamb, and left her wool and milk for all takers. She cries out for the cherished thing with which she was crowned: the beloved of her eyes eluded her as Apostomus burnt the Torah. A fool cursed those oppressed and broken to vex them; he taunted abject people: “They shall be consumed;” “God shall hide His face from seeing.” When idols were placed in the Temple, God avenged one’s hand at the hand of the other, a disgusting item consumed. This, at the time when He gathered anguish over us; for an image was set up in the Sanctuary of God. Miserable and plagued are these children, who were once the very first. Their troubles have come close on one another’s heels these many years; stricken as if by the stings of bees and scorpions. They think their hope is gone, that as they sit in this darkness they have no more chance. ▸Zealous God, in Your restraint towards those who incite You they have flourished fat and succulent. Raise up those who still await You; let them stand firm always, like something planted, or carved out with love. It is on fast days that truth and peace are hewn out. May they become forever times of joy and celebration – festive days.

עֲשֵׂה Deal kindly with us as You have promised, “Even so, when they are in the land of their enemies I shall not reject them and shall not detest them to the point of destruction, to the point of breaking My covenant with them, for I am the LORD their God.” Restore our fortunes, and have compassion for us as is written, “And God shall restore your fortunes and have compassion for you, and shall return and gather you in from all the nations among whom the LORD has scattered you.” Gather those of us who have been distanced, as is written, “If your distanced ones are at the very ends of the heavens, from there shall the LORD your God gather you; from there shall He bring You.” Wipe out our crimes as if they were a cloud, as if they were a haze, as is written, “I have wiped out your crimes like a cloud, and as a haze your sins; come back to Me for I have redeemed you.” Wipe out our crimes for Your sake, as You have said, “I, I am the one who shall wipe out your crimes for My sake, and I shall not recall your sins.” Whiten our sins as snow and as wool, as is written, “Come now, let us reason together, says the LORD; If your sins are like scarlet, they shall be whitened like snow; should they be as red as crimson, they shall become like wool.” Throw over us pure waters and purify us, as is written, “I shall throw pure waters over you and you shall be pure. I shall purify you of all your impurities and of all your idolatry.” Have compassion for us and do not destroy us, as is written, “For the LORD your God is a compassionate God; He will not cease to hold you and He will not destroy you, and will not forget the covenant of your fathers that He pledged to them.” Circumcise our hearts to love Your name, as is written, “And the LORD will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants to love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, so that you shall live.” Let us find You when we seek You, as is written, “And if from there you seek the LORD your God, you shall find Him, when you seek Him out with all your heart and with all your soul.” Bring us to Your holy mountain, and let us rejoice in Your house of prayer, as is written, “I shall bring them to My holy mountain, and I shall make them rejoice in My house of prayer; their offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted, desired on My altar, for My House will be called a house of prayer for all peoples.”

**English Edition; Koren Publishers Jerusalem, 2017:**
שְׁמַע קוֹלֵֽנוּ Listen to our voice, LORD our God. Spare us and have compassion on us, and in compassion and favor accept our prayer. Turn us back, O LORD, to You, and we will return. Renew our days as of old. Do not cast us away from You, and do not take Your holy spirit from us. Do not cast us away in our old age; when our strength is gone do not desert us.◂Do not desert us, LORD; our God, do not be distant from us. Give us a sign of good things, and those who hate us shall see it and be ashamed, for You, LORD, will help us and console us. Hear our speech, LORD, consider our thoughts. May the words of our mouths and the thoughts within our hearts be pleasing to You, LORD, our Rock and our Redeemer. For it is You, LORD, that we have longed for; You shall answer us, LORD our God.
