**English Edition; Koren Publishers Jerusalem, 2017:**
**בָּרְכִי נַפְשִׁי** Bless the LORD, my soul. LORD, my God, You are very great, clothed in majesty and splendor, wrapped in a robe of light. You have spread out the heavens like a tent. He has laid the beams of His lofts in the waters. He makes the clouds His chariot, riding on the wings of the wind. He makes the winds His messengers, flames of fire His ministers. He has fixed the earth on its foundations so that it will never be shaken. You covered it with the deep like a cloak; the waters stood above the mountains. At Your rebuke they fled; at the sound of Your thunder they rushed away, flowing over the hills, pouring down into the valleys to the place You appointed for them. You fixed a boundary they were not to pass, so that they would never cover the earth again. He makes springs flow in the valleys; they make their way between the hills, giving drink to all the beasts of the field; the wild donkeys quench their thirst. The birds of the sky dwell beside them, singing among the foliage. He waters the mountains from His lofts: the earth is sated with the fruit of Your work. He makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for the use of man, that he may produce bread from the earth, wine to cheer the heart of man, oil to make the face shine, and bread to sustain man’s heart. The trees of the LORD drink their fill, the cedars of Lebanon which He planted. There, birds build their nests; the stork makes its home in the cypresses. High hills are for the wild goats; crags are shelter for the badgers. He made the moon to mark the seasons, and makes the sun know when to set. You bring darkness and it is night; then all the beasts of the forests stir. The young lions roar for prey, seeking their food from God. When the sun rises, they slink away and seek rest in their lairs. Man goes out to his work and his labor until evening. How numerous are Your works, LORD; You made them all in wisdom; the earth is full of Your creations. There is the vast, immeasurable sea with its countless swarming creatures, living things great and small. There ships sail. There is Leviathan You formed to sport there. All of them look to You in hope, to give them their food when it is due. What You give them, they gather up. When You open Your hand, they are sated with good. When You hide Your face, they are dismayed. When You take away their breath, they die and return to dust. When You send back Your breath, they are created, giving new life to the earth. May the glory of the LORD be for ever; may the LORD rejoice in His works. When He looks at the earth, it trembles. When He touches the mountains, they pour forth smoke. I will sing to the LORD as long as I live; I will sing psalms to my God all my life. May my meditation be pleasing to Him; I shall rejoice in the LORD. May sinners vanish from the earth, and the wicked be no more. Bless the LORD, my soul. Halleluya!

A song of ascents. I called to the LORD in my distress and He answered me. “LORD, save my soul from lying lips, from a deceitful tongue.” What will a deceitful tongue profit you? What will you gain? Only a warrior’s sharp arrows, and hot coals of broom-wood. Woe to me that I dwell in Meshekh, that I live among the tents of Kedar. I have lived too long among those who hate peace. I am for peace, but whenever I speak of it, they are for war.

A song of ascents. I lift my eyes up to the hills; from where will my help come? My help comes from the LORD, Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot stumble; He who guards you does not slumber. See: the Guardian of Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps. The LORD is your Guardian; the LORD is your Shade at your right hand. The sun will not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD will guard you from all harm; He will guard your life. The LORD will guard your going and coming, now and for evermore.

A song of ascents. Of David. I rejoiced when they said to me, “Let us go to the House of the LORD.” Our feet stood within your gates, Jerusalem: Jerusalem built as a city joined together. There the tribes went up, the tribes of the LORD – as a testimony to Israel – to give thanks to the name of the LORD. For there the thrones of justice are set, the thrones of the house of David. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: “May those who love you prosper. May there be peace within your ramparts, tranquility in your citadels.” For the sake of my brothers and my friends, I shall say, “Peace be within you.” For the sake of the House of the LORD our God, I shall seek your good.

A song of ascents. To You, enthroned in heaven, I lift my eyes. As the eyes of slaves turn to their master’s hand, or the eyes of a slave-girl to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes are turned to the LORD our God, awaiting His favor. Show us favor, LORD, show us favor, for we have suffered more than enough contempt. Too long have we suffered the scorn of the complacent, the contempt of arrogant men.

A song of ascents. Of David. Had the LORD not been on our side – let Israel say it – had the LORD not been on our side when men rose up against us, they would have swallowed us alive when their anger raged against us. The waters would have engulfed us; the torrent would have swept over us; over us would have swept the raging waters. Blessed be the LORD who did not leave us as a prey for their teeth. We escaped like a bird from the fowler’s trap; the trap broke and we escaped. Our help is in the name of the LORD, Maker of heaven and earth.

A song of ascents. Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion that cannot be moved, that stands firm for ever. As hills surround Jerusalem so the LORD surrounds His people, now and forever. The scepter of the wicked shall not rest on the land allotted to the righteous, so that the righteous shall not set their hand to wrongdoing. Do good, LORD, to those who are good, to those who are upright in heart. As for those who turn aside to crooked ways, may the LORD make them go the way of evildoers. Peace be on Israel!

Then was it said among the nations, “The LORD has done great things for them.” The LORD did do great things for us and we rejoiced. Bring back our exiles, LORD, like streams in a dry land. A song of ascents. Of Solomon. Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD guards the city, in vain does the guard keep watch. In vain do you rise early and go late to rest, toiling for the bread you eat. He provides for His loved ones while they sleep. Children are a heritage from the LORD; the fruit of the womb, His reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the sons of one’s youth. Happy is the man who fills his quiver with them; they shall not be put to shame when they contend with the enemy at the gate.

A song of ascents. Often since I was young I have been attacked – let Israel now say – often since I was young I have been attacked, but never have my attackers prevailed. Ploughmen ploughed across my back, making long furrows. But the LORD is just; He has cut the bonds of the wicked. Let all who hate Zion be driven back in shame. Let them be like the grass on roofs that fades before it can be pulled up. It will never fill a reaper’s hand nor yield an armful for the gatherer of sheaves. No passersby will say to them: “The LORD’s blessing be upon you. We bless you in the name of the LORD.”

**English Edition; Koren Publishers Jerusalem, 2017:**
A song of ascents. From the depths I have called to You, O LORD. LORD, hear my voice; let Your ears be attentive to my plea. If You, LORD, should keep account of sins, O LORD, who could stand? But with You there is forgiveness, that You may be held in awe. I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in His word I put my hope. My soul waits for the LORD more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning. Israel, put your hope in the LORD, for with the LORD there is loving-kindness, and great is His power to redeem. It is He who will redeem Israel from all their sins.

A song of ascents. By David. LORD, my heart is not proud, nor are my eyes haughty. I do not busy myself with great affairs or with things beyond me. But I have made my soul still and quiet, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me. Israel, put your hope in the LORD, now and for evermore.

A song of ascents. LORD, remember David and all the hardship he endured. He swore an oath to the LORD and made a vow to the Mighty One of Jacob: “I will not enter my house, nor go to bed; I will not give sleep to my eyes or slumber to my eyelids, until I find a place for the LORD, a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.” We heard of it in Efrat, we found it in the fields of Yaar. Let us enter His dwelling, worship at His footstool. Advance, LORD, to Your resting place, You and Your mighty Ark. Your priests are robed in righteousness; Your devoted ones sing for joy. For the sake of Your servant David, do not reject Your anointed one. The LORD swore to David a firm oath that He will not revoke: “One of your own descendants I will set upon your throne. If your sons keep My covenant and My decrees that I teach them, then their sons shall sit upon your throne for all time.” For the LORD has chosen Zion; He desired it for His home. This is My resting place for all time; here I will dwell, for that is My desire. I will amply bless its store of food; its poor I will satisfy with bread. I will clothe its priests with salvation; its loyal ones shall sing for joy. There I will make David’s dynasty flourish; I will prepare a lamp for My anointed one. I will clothe his enemies with shame, but on him will be a shining crown.

A song of ascents. By David. How good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell together. It is like fragrant oil on the head, running down onto the beard, Aaron’s beard, that runs down over the collar of his robes. It is like the dew of Hermon that falls on the mountains of Zion. There the LORD bestows His blessing, life for evermore.

A song of ascents. Come, bless the LORD, all you servants of the LORD, who nightly stand in the House of the LORD. Lift up your hands toward the Sanctuary and bless the LORD. May the LORD, Maker of heaven and earth, bless you from Zion!
