And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: Consecrate every firstborn to Me; that which first opens the wombs of the children of Israel, their people and their livestock, shall be Mine. And Moses said to the people: Remember this day, the day you came out of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, for it was with the strength of His hand that the LORD took you out of this place; no leaven may be eaten. You are going out today, in the month of Aviv. *When the LORD brings you to the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Hivites and the Jebusites as He swore to your ancestors, giving you a land flowing with milk and honey, you must observe this rite in this month. For seven days you shall eat matzot, and the seventh day shall be a festival for the LORD. Matzot shall be eaten all these seven days; no leavened bread shall be seen by you, nor shall any leaven be seen by you within any of your borders. And you shall explain to your child on that day, “It is because of what the LORD did for me when I went out of Egypt.” And this should be a sign on your arm, a remembrance between your eyes, that the LORD’s Torah be on your tongue always; for it was with a strong hand that the LORD took you out of Egypt. And you shall observe these laws at their appointed time, each and every year.

When the LORD brings you to the land of the Canaanites, as He swore to you and to your forefathers, and gives it to you, you shall set aside for the LORD all that first opens the womb; all that opens the womb, the offspring of livestock belonging to you – the males shall be for the LORD. And every firstborn donkey shall be redeemed with a lamb; if you do not redeem it, you must behead it. And every human firstborn among your sons you must redeem. And if in time to come your child should ask you, “What is this?” You shall say to him: “With a strong hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt, from the house of slavery. And when Pharaoh harshly refused to release us, the LORD slew every firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn sons to the firstborn cattle; that is why I offer up to the LORD every male animal that first opens the womb; and any firstborn son born to me I must redeem.” This shall be a sign upon your hand and an emblem between your eyes; for by the strength of His hand the LORD took us out of Egypt.

Should you lend money to one of My people, to a poor man among you, do not conduct yourself toward him as a usurer: do not burden him with interest. Should you take the robe of your kinsman as collateral, you must return it to him before the sun sets. For that is his only clothing – the robe he wears upon his skin – with what is he to lie down? If he cries out to Me I will listen; for I am compassionate.

You shall not blaspheme God, nor shall you curse a leader among your people. You may not delay your bringing of the fullness of your harvest or the outflow of your presses. You shall give Me the firstborn of your sons. You shall do the same with your oxen and your flock – the young shall stay with their mothers for seven days, but on the eighth day you shall offer them to Me. Be sanctified people unto Me: do not eat meat that has been torn up in the field, but cast it away to the dogs. Do not utter a false report; do not join hands with a wicked man by acting as a false witness. Do not follow a majority to condemn; do not follow the majority to speak in a dispute in a way which will pervert judgment. And neither may you favor a poor man in his case at law. If you encounter your enemy’s ox or donkey gone astray, you must certainly return it to him. If you see the donkey of your enemy stooping under its load, and you hesitate to help – you must certainly help him.

Do not pervert the judgment of your poor in his case at law. Keep your distance from false speech, and do not cause the innocent and righteous to die; for I will not allow the wicked to be acquitted. And do not take bribes, for bribes blind those who see and pervert the words of the righteous. Do not press the stranger; you know the soul of the stranger, for you yourselves were strangers in the land of Egypt. For six years you may plant your land and gather its harvest. But in the seventh year you must leave it be and let it lie fallow, so that the poor among your people might eat of it, and the beasts of the field might eat what remains; this is what you shall do with your vineyards and olive orchards. Six days you may perform your work, but on the seventh day, you shall refrain from working, so that your ox and donkey might rest, and so that the child of your female slave, and the stranger, might find respite. Take care to adhere to all that I have commanded you, and do not pronounce the name of any foreign god; none of them should be heard from your mouth. You shall celebrate three festivals each year for Me. Keep the Festival of Matzot: eat matzot for seven days, as I have commanded you, in the season of the month of the Aviv, for that is when you came out of Egypt – do not come before Me empty-handed; and the Festival of Harvest, [when you shall offer] the first produce of the grain that you plant in the field, and the Festival of Gathering, at the end of the year, when you gather your harvest from the field. Three times a year all males shall present themselves before their Master, the LORD. Do not offer the blood of My sacrifice with leaven; the fats of My festive [Pesaḥ] offering may not remain until the morning. You shall bring the first fruits of your land to the House of the LORD your God. You may not cook a kid in its mother’s milk.

The LORD said to Moses: Carve out two stone tablets for yourself, like the first ones, and I will inscribe on them the same words that were on the first tablets, which you broke. Prepare yourself by morning, for in the morning you shall go up to Mount Sinai and stand before Me there, at the summit. No one shall go up with you, nor shall anyone be seen anywhere on the mountain; even the sheep and cattle may not graze in front of that mountain. *So he carved out two stone tablets like the first ones; Moses arose early in the morning and walked up Mount Sinai as the LORD had commanded him, taking in his hand the two stone tablets. The LORD descended in a cloud, and stood with him there; and proclaimed in the name of the LORD. And the LORD passed by before him and proclaimed: “The LORD, the LORD, compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in loving-kindness and truth, extending loving-kindness to a thousand generations, forgiving iniquity, rebellion and sin, He shall not absolve [those who do not repent], but shall visit the punishment of fathers’ sins upon their children and grandchildren to the third and fourth generation.” And Moses hastened to bow to the ground, prostrating himself. He said: “O LORD, if I find favor in Your eyes, please, let the LORD go forth in our midst, for this is a stiff-necked people; forgive us our iniquity and our sin, and take us as Your inheritance.” He said: “Behold, I will forge a covenant: in the presence of your entire people I will work wonders like none ever formed in all the world or for any nation; this people among whom you dwell shall witness the works of the LORD, for what I will do for you is awesome indeed. *Keep what I command you today; I shall expel the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizites, the Hivites and the Jebusites for you. Guard yourselves against forging any covenant with the inhabitants of the land that you are about to enter, so that they do not become a snare in your path. Instead, shatter their altars, break apart their sacred pillars, and cut down their worshiped trees. For you may not bow to any other god, for the LORD’s name is Jealous; He is a jealous God. [And so do this,] lest you make a covenant with an inhabitant of the land and, when they stray after their gods and offer sacrifices to them, he invite you to partake of his sacrifice, and you do. And lest you take of his daughters to marry your sons; and these daughters stray after their gods and cause your sons to worship them too. Do not make molten gods for yourselves. Observe the Festival of Matzot: you shall eat matzot for seven days as I have commanded you, at the season of the month of Aviv, for in the month of Aviv you went out of Egypt. Every firstborn that opens the womb is Mine, as well as every firstborn male of your herd, whether bullock or lamb. A firstborn donkey must be redeemed with a lamb, and if you do not redeem it, you must behead it; each of your own firstborn sons must be redeemed: do not approach Me empty-handed. Six days you shall do your work but on the seventh day you shall rest: in plowing and in sowing seasons too, you must rest. You shall celebrate a Festival of Weeks [Shavuot] at the time of the first wheat harvest, and a festival of ingathering [Sukkot] at the completion of the year. Three times a year all males shall present themselves before their Master, the LORD God of Israel. When I conquer nations for you and extend your borders, no one will covet your land when you go up to be seen by the LORD your God, three times each year. Do not slaughter My [Pesaḥ] offering along with leaven; the offering of the Pesaḥ festival must not be allowed to remain until morning. You shall bring the first fruits of your land to the House of the LORD your God. Do not cook a kid in its mother’s milk.

The LORD spoke to Moses in the Sinai Desert, in the first month of the second year after their exodus from Egypt, saying, “The children of Israel must bring the Pesaḥ offering at its appointed time. It shall be offered on the fourteenth day of this month, in the afternoon, at its appointed time; all its statutes and rules must be observed.” And Moses spoke to the children of Israel, and told them to bring the Pesaḥ offering. And so they brought the Pesaḥ offering on the afternoon of the fourteenth day of the first month, in the Sinai Desert; just as the LORD commanded Moses, so did the children of Israel do. *There were some men who had been defiled by contact with death, so that they could not bring the Pesaḥ offering on that day; they approached Moses and Aaron on that very day. And the men said to Moses, “We are defiled by death; why should we be be excluded from bringing the LORD’s sacrifice at its appointed time with the rest of the children of Israel?” Moses said to them, “Stand here, and I will hear what the LORD commands you to do.”

Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: “Any man who is defiled by death, or is on a long journey – now or in future generations – may still bring a Pesaḥ offering to the LORD. In the second month, on the afternoon of the fourteenth day shall they bring it; they must eat it with matzot and bitter herbs. They may not leave any of it until the morning, nor may they break any of its bones; they should bring it in accordance with all the rules of the Pesaḥ offering. But a man who is pure, and is not on a journey, and who neglects to bring the Pesaḥ offering – that soul will be cut off from among its people, for that man did not bring the LORD’s offering at its appointed time, and he must bear his sin. If a proselyte lives among you and brings a Pesaḥ offering to the LORD, he must follow all the statutes and rules of the Pesaḥ offering; the same law shall apply to you, to the proselyte and to those born in your land.
