Moses called for all of the elders of Israel and told them, “Select and take lambs for yourselves, one for each family, and slaughter them as a Pesaḥ offering. Then take a bunch of hyssop, dip it in the blood that is on the threshold and apply of that blood to the lintel and the two side-posts; no man may exit the door of his house until morning. And the LORD shall come to strike Egypt; when He sees the blood upon the lintel and the two side-posts, He will pass over the opening and will not allow the Destroyer to come into your houses to strike you. You must observe this as a statute for you and for your children forever. *And when you enter the land which the LORD shall give you as He promised, you shall observe this rite. And if your children should say to you: ‘What is this service to you?’ You shall say: ‘It is a Pesaḥ offering for the LORD, for He passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt while He struck the Egyptians, but saved those in our homes’” – and the people bowed and prostrated themselves. So the children of Israel went and did just as the LORD had commanded Moses and Aaron; so it was done.
And when midnight came, the LORD slew every firstborn in the land of Egypt: from the firstborn of Pharaoh sitting on his throne to the firstborn of the captive in prison, and the firstborns of all their livestock. And Pharaoh arose at night, he and all of his servants and all of Egypt; and there was a great cry in Egypt, for no house was without one dead. So he called for Moses and Aaron at night, and said: “Rise up, leave the midst of my people, you and the children of Israel, and go worship the LORD as you said! Take both your sheep and your cattle, as you requested, and go – and you shall also bless me.” *All of Egypt urged the people, making haste to expel them from their land – for they said, “We are all dying!” So the people carried their dough before it was leavened, their kneading-troughs bound up in their clothes, slung over their shoulders. And the children of Israel did as Moses commanded: they asked the Egyptians for silver vessels, golden vessels, and clothing. And the LORD caused the people to find favor in the eyes of the Egyptians – they let them have what they asked, and [thus the Israelites] depleted Egypt.

The children of Israel then traveled from Rameses to Sukkot – about six hundred thousand men on foot, as well as children. A mixed multitude went up with them as well, and sheep and cattle, herds of great number. They baked the dough they had taken out of Egypt, matza rounds, for they had not risen; for they were expelled from Egypt and could not delay, and they had not prepared any provisions for themselves. The children of Israel had dwelled in Egypt for four hundred and thirty years. And when four hundred and thirty years came to an end, on that very day, the LORD’s hosts left Egypt. It was a night of guarding to the LORD, so as to bring them out of Egypt – this night is therefore safeguarded for the LORD, by all of the children of Israel for all generations.

The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron: These are the laws of the Pesaḥ offering: no stranger shall eat of it. Every man’s slave that is bought for money must first be circumcised; after that he may eat of it. A sojourner or hired laborer may not eat of it. It must be eaten in one house – you may not take any of its meat outside the house, and you may not break any of its bones. All the community of Israel shall observe this. *If a proselyte lives among you and brings a Pesaḥ offering to the LORD, he must circumcise all of his males – then he may come and offer it, just as one home-born in your land – no one uncircumcised may partake of it. The same law shall apply to one born in your land and to the proselyte who dwells among you. All of the children of Israel did as the LORD commanded Moses and Aaron; that is what they did. It was on that very day that the LORD brought the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt, in all their hosts.

On the fourteenth day of the first month there shall be a Pesaḥ offering to the LORD. And on the fifteenth day of this month there shall be a festival: seven days unleavened bread shall be eaten. On the first day there shall be a sacred assembly: you shall do no laborious work. And you shall bring an offering consumed by fire, a burnt-offering to the LORD: two young bullocks, one ram, and seven yearling male lambs; they shall be to you unblemished. And you shall perform their meal-offerings, fine flour mixed with oil, three-tenths of an ephah for each bull, two-tenths of an ephah for the ram; and one-tenth of an ephah for each of the seven lambs; and one goat for a sin-offering, to make atonement for you. All this aside from the morning burnt-offering, the daily offering; You shall offer all of these as food, on each of the seven days, a burnt-offering by fire of pleasing aroma to the LORD, along with the regular daily offering and its libation. On the seventh day there shall be a sacred assembly: you shall do no laborious work.

*At that time, the LORD said to Joshua: make knives of flint for yourself and circumcise the children of Israel again. So Joshua made for himself knives of flint and circumcised the children of Israel on the Hill of Aralot [foreskins]. This is why Joshua had to circumcise them. All of the males who had left Egypt, all the men of battle, had died in the desert on their way up from Egypt. For all of the nation who had left [Egypt] had been circumcised, but all of those born in the desert on the way up from Egypt had not been circumcised. For the children of Israel had journeyed in the desert for forty years until all of the people, the men of battle who had left Egypt, had perished, for they had not heeded the voice of the LORD, the LORD had sworn to them that they were not to see the land which the LORD had promised to their forefathers to give to us, a land flowing with milk and honey. But their children who survived them – they were circumcised by Joshua, for they were still uncircumcised, as they had not been circumcised on the journey. When all of the people had been circumcised, they stayed in the camp until they healed.

The LORD said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled the shame of Egypt away from you,” and he named that place Gilgal [“rolling”], and so it is known to this day. The children of Israel camped at Gilgal and they made the Pesaḥ offering on the fourteenth day of the month in the evening, on the plains of Jericho. They ate of the produce of the land on the day after the Pesaḥ, matzot and roasted grain, on that very day. And the manna ceased [to come down] the next day, when they ate of the produce of the land, and the children of Israel no longer had manna; they ate of the crops of the land of Canaan that year.
When Joshua was in Jericho, he raised his eyes and looked up – and a man was standing opposite him, with his sword drawn in his hand; Joshua approached him and said to him, “Are you for us or are you for our adversaries?” [The man] said, “No, for I am captain of the LORD’s hosts; I have just arrived” – and Joshua fell upon his face to the ground and prostrated himself and said, “What words has my master to speak to his servant?” And the captain of the LORD’s hosts said to Joshua, “Remove the shoes from your feet, for the place upon which you are standing is sanctified.” And Joshua did as he had said. And Jericho was completely closed off for fear of the children of Israel: none went out and none came in.

The LORD spoke to Moses, saying: When a bullock or lamb or goat is born, it shall remain with its mother for seven days; from the eighth day onwards it will be accepted as a sacrifice, a fire-offering to the LORD. Whether a bullock or a sheep, you may not slaughter the animal and its offspring on the same day. If you bring an offering of thanksgiving to God, offer it so that it will be accepted from you. It must be eaten on that very day; let none of it remain until morning; I am the LORD. Safeguard My commandments and perform them; I am the LORD. Do not profane My holy name; I shall be sanctified among the children of Israel; I am the LORD who sanctifies you, who has taken you out of the land of Egypt to be your God: I am the LORD.

The LORD spoke to Moses, saying: Speak to the children of Israel, and tell them: On the fifteenth day of this seventh month, there shall be a Festival of Booths for the LORD, for seven days. On the first day there shall be a sacred assembly; you shall do no laborious work. For seven days, you shall bring fire-offerings to the LORD; on the eighth day there will be a sacred assembly, and you shall bring another fire-offering to the LORD – it is a day of gathering; you shall do no laborious work. These are the appointed times of the LORD which you shall proclaim to be days of sacred assembly, bringing fire-offerings to the LORD: burnt-offerings, meal-offerings, peace-offerings and wine-libations, as ordained for each day, in addition to the LORD’s Sabbath offerings, and your donated offerings, and all the vows and voluntary offerings which you may offer to the LORD. But on the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when you gather the harvest of the land, you shall celebrate the LORD’s holiday for seven days; the first day shall be a day of rest, and the eighth day shall be a day of rest. And on the first day, you shall take for yourselves a fruit of the citron tree, palm fronds, myrtle branches and willows of the brook, and be joyous in the presence of the LORD your God for seven days. You shall celebrate it, a holiday for the LORD, seven days a year – this is an eternal ordinance for all your generations – you shall celebrate it in the seventh month. You shall dwell in booths for seven days; all those born among Israel shall dwell in booths, so that your descendants will know that I settled the children of Israel in booths when I brought them out of the land of Egypt; I am the LORD your God. And Moses related all of the LORD’s festivals to the children of Israel.

So the king sent for all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem, and they came to him. The king went up to the Temple along with all the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and the priests and the prophets, and all the people, young and old, and he read to them all that was written in the Book of the Covenant that had been found in the Temple. The king stood on his platform and made a covenant before the LORD, [pledging] to walk after Him and to observe His commandments and statutes and laws with all his heart and all his soul, to observe the words of that covenant written in the scroll of the Torah – and all the people committed themselves to the covenant. *Then the king commanded Ḥilkiyahu the high priest and the priests second in rank and the gatekeepers, to take all of the vessels that had been made for Ba’al and Ashera and for all the hosts of the heavens out of the LORD’s sanctuary; he burned all of these outside Jerusalem, on the fields of Kidron, and carried their ashes to Beit El. He put an end to the practice of the idolatrous priests who had been appointed by the kings of Judah, those who had offered up incense on the high places of worship in the cities of Judah and in places all around Jerusalem, as well as those who had burned incense to Ba’al and to the sun and moon and constellations and to all of the hosts of heaven. He took the Ashera out of the Temple and brought it out of Jerusalem to the Kidron Valley and burned it there, grinding it to fine dust, and threw its ashes upon the graves of the people. He destroyed the rooms of the male temple-prostitutes in the House of the LORD, where the women would weave hangings in honor of the Ashera. He brought in all of the priests from the cities of Judah; he defiled the high places upon which the priests had worshiped, from Geva [in the north] all the way to Be’er Sheva [in the south]; he shattered the high places of the gate which were at the gate of Joshua, the city sentry, to the left of those who entered the city’s gates. But the priests of the high places were not allowed to go up the LORD’s altar in Jerusalem, but only to eat matzot among their brethren.

*The king commanded all the people, saying: “Observe the Pesaḥ in honor of the LORD your God, as prescribed in this Book of the Covenant. For the Pesaḥ had not been observed [with such ceremony] since the days of the judges who judged Israel, nor throughout the times of all of the kings of Israel or the kings of Judea. Only in the eighteenth year of King Josiah was the Pesaḥ observed so, in honor of the LORD in Jerusalem. Moreover, those who divined by a ghost or a familiar spirit, and the idols and the graven images and all the detestable things which had ever been seen in the land of Judea and Jerusalem were also destroyed by King Josiah, to uphold the covenant prescribed in the scroll which Ḥilkiyahu the priest had found in the Temple. And like him there was no king before him, who returned to the LORD with all his heart and all his soul and all his might, following all that was written in the Torah of Moses; and none like him came after.
